Traction Layout
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, October 9, 2005 3:32 PM
Hello Everybody

I was wondering how many traction modellers are out there. I am building a layout based on the Iowa Traction Ralroad and wanted to know how many other "Juice" fans there wer out there?

Thank You,

I have a couple of British OO scale trams - first up, a Corgi diecast London Transport "Feltham" car:

Fitted with a BEC motorising kit - two power trucks each with one axle powered.

Secondly, very much a work in progress, a Tramalan Glasgow "Cunarder" car:

This will eventually have BEC power trucks fitted, they're currently on order. After that it's just a case of fixing the roof in place and filling/filing it, then adding the lifeguards around the lower bodysides. Numberboards and destination blinds will finish it off, along with a dummy overhead power collector. Hope these are of interest!

What area are you planning on modelling?
I picked up a great little book called "Remember the Portland, Maine Trolleys" it has alot of great pictures including alot of the service trolleys spinkler cars, snow plows and snow sweepers, freight hauling trolleys, MOW ,the works.
I'm not a traction modeller but this book would almost make me want to be one.

I am modelling the Iowa Traction Railroad which is a 13 mile railroad between Mason City and Clear Lake, Iowa. It is the former Mason City and Clear Lake interurban line. There is a nice article on the line in the Nov. issue of Trains. The layout is HO and I have acquire a couple of Cannonball Shops steeple cab locomotives and various overhead fittings and line poles.

My layout is currently diesel but the plan is to "backdate" the layout to the point where both electric "juice jacks" and diesels ran on its tracks (1946-1953.) I have wired up a three-foot section of "test track" to try my hand at overhead wiring but have not yet gotten up the gumption to put trolley wire on the layout yet.

I've got a subway, with R-17 (NYC prototype) and a PCC car. They share tracks, which is probably not prototypical, and they run on rail power only. I might model 3rd rail at some point, and/or add an overhead on part of my surface line for the trolley.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

I'm in the process of becoming a traction modeler. Since I've switched to N scale (which caused my house to more than double in size), I have some room for a full-blown town, which will have it's own small electric railway. I'm thinking a couple trolleys, maybe an interurban between the town and some "off-layout" town, and a steeplecab to push a boxcar or two through the streets.

But, construction on the new layout isn't slated to commence until about January, so for now, it's reading Carsten's Traction Planbook and Mike Schafer's Traction Guidebook for Model Railroaders until I have 'em memorized. [:D]
