I'm with Jim and Ira -- anything Daylight. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone is going to produce articulated diners or large-window coaches in plastic anytime soon, but there was something about those colors and that train which really captured the imagination and still does!

The stuff may not be in current production, but I've seen the Walthers F40PH and Horizon commuter cars in MBTA livery still available from mail order places. They can probably be found at trains shows and on eBay without a great deal of difficulty. Imperial Hobby Productions makes a resin FP10 shell, as well.

N&W Powhattan Arrow - Have the East Coast Cars to Paint and Decal along with a Sunset J1a.
PRR Broadway Ltd - Have the old Rivarossi Cars, just need a few other ones to fill the the roster. Can power with either E-8's, PB-20's Sharks or Streamlined K-4.
NYC Twentieth Centrury - Have the Limited Edition E&B Valley set of cars painted in the 1938 Scheme which perfectly matches my Key J3a Super Hudson with Dreyfus Streamlining.
Many secondary PRR trains with K4s power.

Being a major psgr train freak,I've got somewhere in the nieghborhood of 2 dozen built but the one I'd really like to get is the 1950 Coast Daylight. I've got the GS-4 and 20 of the old Limited Edition kits and one of these days I'm going to get a gumption transfusion and get going on it. I am! Really!

The Clover Leaf's Commercial Traveller. This train was 5 cars long (don't remember the types), emphasized that it was convenient not speedy, competed with the Wabash Cannonball, St Louis to Toledo, began service in 1901 and ended under NKP auspices just after WW2.

Related subject: Does anybody remember an MR or RMC article titled "Pike-sized Passenger Trains" run probably 10-15 years ago? If so, is there a way to get back copies?

I would like to see more cars that are used in business/excursion trains rather than a set consist for a passenger train
more business cars, theater cars, power cars, railroad specific sleepers, diners/lounges and coaches

I'd love to have the 1935 IC Green Diamond and 1938 RI Rocket in N-Scale. Oh, and maybe the M-10001 COP and M10005 COD, M10003 COSF, M10002 COLA, Rocky Mountain Rocket, Flying Yankee, 1935 and 1938 Twin Zephyrs, the retooled 1945 Twin Zephyrs, the General Pershing Zephyr, the TC HI's, an Oly Hi, The Comet, The 1938 Rebel - too cool, the eagle, and about a hundred others....

Anyone seen 'em in a recent product release?

Currently have a nice lineup for the crucial 400's, an Empire Builder, a 1950's COSF, the CZ, and most important, even if it doesn't fit the era, the M-10000 and The Pioneer Zephyr.

I'm not aware of anyone offering the finned version - you may have to add fins to a standard Talgo set. Electrotren have them in HO and N, Ibertren also offered an N scale one though good luck in finding intermediate coaches for those - I have the end cars and two centre ones but haven't seen any others since - I think the Ibertren set was sold as a complete boxed consist so finding extra cars may be a non-starter. Mine's staying in Spanish livery to run with my German N scale collection. Good luck!

HO Scale:

The Seaboard Coast Line's "Champion"; circa 1968.

Have been slowly purchasing Walthers Budd cars to build up this train. I'm also "fixing up" several Rivorossi streamlined cars as well. [8D] Color scheme will be a mixture of SCL, ACL, and SAL, since on the prototype, a number of passenger cars remained in their predecessor road colors after the SAL and ACL merger, some right on up until Amtrak in 1971.[;)]

I will also be "Freelancing" a bit with the train as I'll also be using my P2K FEC E7s to haul it in addition to SCL units. [:p] The prototype FEC (Florida East Coast) did haul the Champion but only up until 1963, before SCL's creation in 1967.

I'm very glad to see that there are other ACL, SAL, and SCL fans here! [C):-)][tup]

For me, the passenger train I want to model is the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad's Passenger fleet, two E9's, an E8, an FP7, and a bunch of first class cars, including Dome cars, coaches, dormitory cars, a baggage car, a sleeper, and a theater car. The only problem with modeling this set of Passenger equipment is that very little of it are standard cars. The guy who owns the WSOR also owned Northern Railcar, a private rail car rebuilding company, and so most of the cars were rebuilt slightlyn before being repainted. And many were heavily modified. So I'll be doing a lot of kitbashing when I do get around to modeling the fleet.........

Seaboard's Silver Meteor and the Orange Blossum Special for sure

i was only a little kid then but there was a beautiful train that used to run thru Jacksonville and it was all purple . It was what really gave me the train flu at 5 or 6 years old. the day we were running along side of it on highway 17 toward Orange Park ill always remember that Might have been SAL ?? but that one is my top choice.

much thanks,John

Oops- you asked the wrong question. Here goes my overbearing answer.

I like passenger trains too. My little 3 x 7' N scale layout of a Santa Fe secondary line in the Piney Woods of East Texas in the 1950s supports only a doodlebug (which is what the prototype ran in my period). I have collected most of the equipment though for 3 prototype Santa Fe trains that ran in the Houston area in the 1950s, and one “semi-prototype” passenger train. It is important to me to model the actual types of cars involved in the service of the train, not just a long train, and the distinctive look of different trains.

Santa Fe Texas Chief: (Galveston-Chicago) all streamlined stainless steel- baggage-RPO, full baggage, partitioned coach for intrastate passengers required by Texas segregation "separate but equal" law, two ordinary coaches, diner, dormitory-lounge and two sleepers.

Texas Chief at Houston Union Station 1973 Amtrak version
http://www.railimages.com/albums/kennethanthony/afr.jpg

Santa Fe California Special: (Houston-Temple-Clovis- connection to California) mixed between standard heavyweight and streamlined equipment. Baggage, heavyweight partition coach, regular heavyweight coach, lunch counter-diner, dormitory-lounge, heavyweight sleeper, semi-streamlined sleeper "Valley" series.

Santa Fe #5-6 (formerly named Ranger) (Galveston-Kansas City) (all heavyweight) Box express, occasional express reefer, 2 full baggage, RPO, 2 coaches, sleeper.

motive power, Santa Fe F7 A-B-B-A set, PA-PB-PA set, E8m A-B, DL-109 #50 w E7B (oddball but I've got a photo to prove it)

"Semi-prototype train". The Texas Mexican did not run passenger service in 1950s, but ran passenger train in 1980s with equipment that existed in 1950s, painted green-white-orange to match its one F7 A-A, and it often actually pulled an ex-Santa Fe sleeper as a private car.

Photo of Texas Mexican Express, 1987
http://www.railimages.com/albums/kennethanthony/agl.jpg

I am 90% done collecting and building these trains, but not the place to run them. These trains will take a room-size layout with 15 to 18" radius curves, and the schematic of the dream layout will be tailored for what I think will be an exciting passenger sequence similar to what actually took place at Houston. My version of Houston will be a through point on the Santa Fe rather than the end of a branch, and will have a Spanish mission style station.

Early in the morning, the Tex-Mex Express terminates at the big station, trailing a through Santa Fe sleeper from Laredo and Corpus Christi which is pulled off to make a Chicago connection.

A little later, the northbound Texas Chief comes in from Galveston. One baggage car from Galveston is switched out of the train and another baggage car and an RPO switched on. And the through sleeper off the Tex Mex is switched on.

WHILE the Texas Chief is in the depot, the Ranger comes in from the north. Most of the baggage and express cars are switched off. The Ranger stands in the depot while the Texas Chief departs northbound.

I will need two or three train lengths of double track north of the big city depot for this next part of the schedule. Every day on the prototype, the Texas Chief made a rolling meet with the California Special on double track as the Texas Chief left the city and the California Special came in. (Is this neat or what?) (Freight-only guys will say "what" I guess.)

The California Special comes into the depot and terminates alongside the Ranger. The Ranger waits for a few passengers from California to make cross-platform transfers before the Ranger departs for Galveston.

Then in the evening, the same interconnecting schedule happens in reverse except that the Ranger runs later after everything else. With these tight connections, with every passenger train having a slightly different consist every day based on through traffic and cars added for traffic variations, and all freight trains running as extras on a much looser schedule, it should make for an interesting layout. This is the kind of passenger I want to do.

I do a short GO train since I ride it twice a day (Toronto to Newmarket) and we can see it go by from our back windows. The best part of it is that my 1 year old son recognizes it as Daddys coming home train and squeals in joy when I run mine in the basement.

Theres also a olive CN train, a couple of CP RDCs, a blue VIA consist and a PRR heavy weight consist. Obviously I haven't decided names for these trains and all that, nor a, I overburdened by prototypical operations.
