Celebrities among us ?... (Off topic)

Former race car driver, now tv commentator Sam Posey is an avid train fanantic. His layout has been in at least one magazine ( MR? ), and not long back I saw a feature on TV with him and his layout. He is good friends with Paul Newman, ( who I've met on several occasions, ) and even modeled the Newman's Own salad dressing factory on his layout, complete with a graveyard out back where they bury the taste testers! [:D]

I don't know if Sam hangs out here or not.

Tracklayer, if you are talking about household name type celebrities liking trains, there are tons. Walt Disney and Frank Sinatra are a couple of the biggest, unfortunately both are gone. Who knows, maybe Gary Coleman, Mandy Patinkin, Michael Gross, or Neil Young are hanging around here, incognito. I'm not sure that Hollywood types have time for this stuff, even if they like trains.

If you are just talking about here on the forum, the biggest name that comes to my mind is Joe Fugate. While Joe isn't a Hollywood type, among this crowd he stands out because of his accomplishments within the hobby. There are a few others here that I'm aware of, with published layouts.

Most people here on the forums don't know this, and I don't usually mention it, but some model railroaders actually consider me a bit of a celebrity. I do use a screen name, but every one of my posts has my real name at the bottom. The thing is it is not a name that everyone knows.

Like Joe and others, my layout has been featured in MR. It has also appeared in CTT, because of the type of trains I use. That layout no longer exists, but it was recorded on video before it was destroyed. I have been told by forum members that the video occasionally airs on RFD TV.

It is very easy and fairly inexpensive to get a copy of that video, as it has recently been transfered to DVD. Mine was the last segment in a six part series called Great Toy Train Layouts of America. The cost is $19.95.

True story: A few years ago I was in a hobby store in suburban Chicago, and somebody actually recognized me from the video. I'm not sure who was more taken aback by this, him for thinking he was meeting a celebrity, or me for finding out that sombody thought I was one. [swg]

Back in the 1950's, there was a local TV show in Hartford, Connecticut called "Ranger Andy". He was a guitar-playing guy who sang songs, had boyscouts and girlscouts on the show in the audience, showed cartoons etc. He was kind of like a local "Captain Kangaroo".

I went on the show featuring my button collection. I dressed up in a suit (I was probably 11 years old) and explained all about button collecting to the audience and the height of the presentation was some civil war buttons I had.

Does this make me a celebrity?

I'm so glad I graduated to model railroading from button collecting. Buttons are pretty boring.

The LHS I just went to is in the town where all the country music stars have their ranches. They have an after hours program so the stars and their kids can shop in peace. (said they have a few Tenn politicians that shop there too).Wouldn't give up any names though.

My son and I are in the local Telephone company's DSL2+ commercial, although i have not even seen the commercial, I have been stopped and told that they have seen me on TV.

Its global too, as the commercial is on their website, so not only am I a local TV celeb, but an international one too.

Read the Neil Young interview in Time today. He is part owner of Lionel, and has helped them in developing control systems for his sons, who have CP. It sounds like he enjoys trains, but it is from a different angle than most of the folks here, I think.
