Utah belt completely fictional?
Posted by THayman on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 7:14 AM
Is Eric Brooman's Utah Belt a completely fictional railroad, or is there a prototype? I was sure I saw some pics of real Utah Belt diesels somewhere, but I could be wrong.

The UB is a fictional railroad that follows certain prototype practices of western lines.

There are no prototype locomotives wearing UB paint.

100% fictional. If I remember correctly it even runs north and south rather than east and west.

I guess it would have been Utah RR locos I saw. Still, Eric does such an incredible job, I have little difficulty imagining the Utah Belt to be real.

MR. There's an article about the final run of UB's SD-9's.

Brooman started out as an SP modeler and even after going over to the free-lance side equipped his locomotives with SP style light groups for quite a while.

Ah, of course. I thought it might be TRAINS!
This just goes to show that he's a good modeller, keeping up with the times. (No matter what I said on that other thread)

I have been wondering also about whether or not the Utah Belt is real or fictional. I tried to look them up on the internet but couldn't find anything. I'm glad somebody asked this question and I'm glad people replied to it.

Then UP can do a commemorative Utah Belt loco, the first in their "Great Model Railroads" series, since they seem to be doing commemoratives for everything else![:D]

IIRC, there was an article in the July, 1982,  RMC about the final runs of UB F's with pictures and all. Check out RMC to see if they have back issues for that month. There were also pictures of UB F's in the April, 1978, RMC as well as the May, 1981 issue. Seems to me there was also at least one picture of UB F's in the 1997 issue of Great Model Railroads. That issue might still be available from Kalmbach.

Hope this helps.

Andre

It's because of Mr. Broomans utah belt, that I came up with my own fictional railroad the northern & atlantic. I must say it is quite a bit of work & imagination to create your own fictional railroad.

Kinda like Joe's Siskiyou Line...the realism is so awesome, I sometimes have to look twice to be certain it's a layout and not the prototype I'm looking at.
