Well, I'll probably keep it at the top if I do many more weathering jobs like I did today. I weathered a coal hopper in no more than 30 min. This includes taping off specific areas. I still have yet to do the inside or the trucks, but 30 min. for a side is good! And the best part is: It isn't some sloppy paint wash; It's black chalk/powder(Whatever[:P])brushed on the car over and over and over again. And it looks prototypical! I live in with many coal hoppers(Borrring), so I ought to know how they look![swg]

It is a quick, inexpensive method for getting a fleet dirty! I've never used an airbrush [:I] but do have a friend's old Badger I've been wanting to try out. Maybe I'll do a few "super detailed" weathering jobs before long.

Chalk and Dullcote? That's the way to go, in my opinion! I won't have but 9 or 10 amazingly weathered cars on my layout, out of the 250 or so rolling stock. All the good ones will probably go to eBay. But, everything else will probably get a light coat of something to it. So, unless you're trying to portray one particular prototype or a few prototypes combined(as I do) for a special project, what you're doing is probably all you need to be doing. Also, they look good. Keep it up!

My first one I put on eBay. It's a Roundhouse CSX/SBD 50' mill gondola. I patched the "Transportation" lettering, as per prototypes.


A RailBox that I'm working on. This one's going into my personal collection.




The Santa Fe that is now a part of Daniel's collection. I sold this one on eBay as well.

I used gray embroidery thread, CA'd to each insulator. Lots of hours involved! I tried a metallic thread, too unrealistic and also black thread which blended into the scenery too much. I plan on weathering some more rolling stock, using some new techniques I read about on this forum and will post photos (if they turn out decent).

I plan to dismantle this layout soon and start another and will try new techniques on power lines then, have some ideas about using the fine copper wire from loco motor windings if I can get it to droop realistically. By the way, the thread starts to stretch and droop realistically after about 2 weeks.

Lots of fine weathering ideas in these posts....

Love that challenger, Aggro.... Haven't had the time to weather mine yet, still looks like it just came out of the Cheyenne shop!

UP_Santafe, nice [tup] also what did you use for all that powerline you have? Any low flying bugs better beware. Looks nice also, I plan on stringing up my towns.

Arrgo, that Santa Fe is one of my favorites, thought the letter dripping on the southern is insipring. I am hoping to start mastering that effect. Seems to common.

Matt, I like that hopper, I think you have the right feel on that, though it should have a white line drawn threw the reporting marks and on the way to the torch.

06Archered (Dan?) That is a very nice weathering on the loco, very stuttle.

The Kaolin car needs some dusting. First vandlized car on the layout. The second vandalized car is now with my grandfather, and old TPW, I am hoping he can use it upstairs [angel]
