KADEE Couplers

What size coupler is the best and most accurate. I know 5's are a little large. Appreciate any feedback.

there is now a 58 or 78 that are really good looking. Friends used to use the Narrow Guage couplers for a similar effect.

Hello racrac,

I'm using Kadee no. 58s on new equipment and converting older equipment from no. 5s to no. 58s. The nice thing is that both styles are compatible so there's no loss of operational flexibility in the meantime.

Jim Hediger of Model Railroad wrote a survey article about couplers a couple years ago. You can read this story online.

Go to www.kadee.com and under product information you will see all their product #s.
In the 1-79 block just click and scroll to the specific coupler #.

Click and up pops an exploded picture, descritpion etc.

Jim's article was excellent when it was published, but things have changed since then. Since then both McHenry (KS series) and Bachmann (EZmate II) have started to offer couplers with metal coil springs like Kadee uses.

In addition, the article did not address coupler length, and over/center/under shank designs.

I far as I know, size or scale is the piont in the original question. KD's are close to S scale and therefore are larger than true H.O. scale.
However, you need this oversize to compensate for the lateral motion of cars (up & down movement] over irregular track. This oversize helps to eliminate annoying train seperations [and embarrassment when running for visitors]. If we are not too nit-picky about scale, the KD couplers perform well and keep the 'trains rolling'.
