Other model railroading forums...
Posted by Tracklayer on Sunday, September 18, 2005 12:39 AM
Other than Trains.com, I belong to a couple of other forums. One of these is, or rather should I say was the ebay forum, which I gave up on because the members there live to flame and insult without anyone doing anything about it more than they talk about railroading. The other one is The Guage, and though it's a good forum, I still prefer this one for a number of reasons.

Has anyone else out there had bad experiences with other forums ?.

I don't know which eBay forum you are talking about, but I like to check out the Soapbox for entertainment. Talk about a flame fest!

I have about 3 other forums I keep pretty active on, though MR is more active and diverse. I think the folks here can be pretty funny, extremely helpful, I see an answered post within a few minutes, as opposed to thers taking a couple of hours to days. Of course I have seen some pretty heavy falmes here, but with us [:o)]'s I think we do pretty good on getting the nasty out.

Of course the flames are nothing compared to the Trains forums.

I USE to spend a lot of time on usnet RecModelsRailroad but gave up on it for reasons you state.. The ebay stuff didn't bother me as much as the people who were there, apparantly, just to be negative.. That's the price that's paid for an unmoderated forum though.. Anybody can participate regardless of intent.. I look in on it once in awhile but don't bother with posting anymore.. Haven't seen any of that here..

I recently discovered the Railroad Line forums through a posting on this one or the Atlas forum. This site has I think about 28 different forums for all sorts of subjects. Several are on building particular Fine Scale Minaitures, watching guys as they assemble them. They are here: http://www.railroad-line.com/

If you have visited the Atlas forum you will see some resemblances, as this one is powered by the same software. But things do work differently. I could not register, no matter what I did. Often such a problem is because of my firewall or antivirus software, or the level of cookie acceptance. I tried shutting these off to no avail. Finally one of the moderators registered me from his end. Everything is fine now.

With so many different forums there is more traffic than the Atlas forum, but less than this MR one. I've found some interesting threads there.

Visiting more than one forum is like reading more than one newspaper or magazine, you get more than one point of view.

As to flames, consider the source. I'll note constructive remarks but nonsense gets appropriate notice.

Since I'm retired and have more free time available I frequent a number of model railroad forums. Each one has it's own "personality" and tone. I've never had any really bad experiences on any of them. Obviously you can run into a flame no matter where you visit, and certain forums have more of an edgy tone of voice than others. It's just a matter of looking around until you find the forum (or forums) you feel most comfortable at.

I like the general atmosphere here on the Model Railroader General forum and probably spend the majority of my time hanging around here, but I also wander around to the other Model Railroader Magazine forums and the Trains Magazine Railroad forum. However, if I have an N scale specific question I'm probably more likely to post it over on one of the forums that have scale specific sections, like TrainBoard or Atlas.

I think the proliferation of model railroad forums on the internet has been great for the hobby. It's certainly helped me a lot.

Regards

I'm registered in a couple of other forums (atlas & bachmann), but consider this one the best of them. The people here are the most friendly, are quick to help, have some darn good ideas and and above all, put up with me and Bubba (>^..^<). Also we range in age from the ancient (like me) down to some pre-teens, so I'm learning a lot from those younger ones and hope they pick up some help and advice from us older ones. It's just a great forum. Just a biased opinion. Ken

Had the same trouble as you, Bob, I believe it does have something to do w/ the software/ firewall. Does seem to be another quite civil and decent forum.

I'm a member on a couple of Yahoo user groups (Digitrax and D&RGW) but the only other forum I post on is http://www.modelrailroadforums.com/forum/index.php . It's a combination free photo host and forum and is a wonderfully structured site. The forum topics are very well thought out and there's even an area to buy/sell items. The folks there are helpful and friendly. I just wi***he membership would increase. It has the potential to be one of the very best sites available. If you guys are interested, give it a look.

I've been on the Gauge since almost day one.I concider that my homebase for forums.I've been on the ATLAS forum almost that long too. There are a lot of good folks on both forums.

As for this one I have no complaints as a general rule though sometimes it feels like the old ATLAS forum.[:D] [:D]I am on a bunch of the YAHOO lists to boot.I am also a member of the Railwire and hang out there on the N scale forum.

I just counted and I am on 20 forums though my participation varies widely.

Since returning to the hobby several years ago after a long absence I've used the MR Forum as an invaluable resource centre many times.
I'm continually amazed at how quickly many members respond with thoughtful, helpful answers to queries, sometimes within minutes, and sometimes from other continents.
It's like belonging to a virtual club, having a wide range of members of different ages, skills, interests and personalities. Much like the local club that I belong to.

I usually browse this forum at least once a day for topics of interest, and browse the Trains forum, The Gauge, modelrailroadsforum.com and railroadsforum.com several times a week. The other forums are interesting too, however I prefer to focus on this one, otherwise I end up spending too much of my model railroading time sitting at the computer, even though enjoyable.

I hit this and the Atlas forum daily. I have about 4 others that I look in on on Sunday evening. Never had a bad experience at any of them.

I visit this one and the G Scale Mad forum ( www.gscalemad.co.uk ) - the latter has far fewer members than this one but more are always welcome, anyone with G scale should take a look and see if you want to join this friendly group.

My main other forum is the-gauge (Hi Catt) and lately the railway modelling web (www.rmweb.co.uk) which is British oriented, but with lots of nonsense tolerated.
