I know that this is not train news but it could be to help out those in need.

If any of you are in the Aiken S.C. area on Nov 12,2005 we are going to donate 100% of the income from our voting jugs to the relief effort. we are doing a different twist trying to get it in time fro Christmas shopping for the people. We have folks in the car clubs we work with to help make sure that the kids get the benefits. Remeber that the young ones do not understand what happened and why Santa Claus did not get there. The voting jugs are in front of every car in the show and who ever gets the most in their calss wins that class trophy (all from Waterfrod Crystal) the one with the most money gets a Waterford Bowl with a value of about $1,200.00.
local train club will have there modules running alond with thier trin fle market. we are hoping for around $2,000.00 in vote money.

I am sure that other methods will come up but this is the first one in stone for the show.
We sent our car carrier from Florida with 300 cases of water. That got as far as the Florida border where it was handed off to Red Cross.

Isn't it amazing that this thread, promoting a well-meanining charitable effort, keeps sinking while others that do nothing but spin people up keep going on and on.

Good luck claycts. I'm sure I won't be in that area, but if somehow we attract one or two more people to the effort, it will be worth it.

Mark, thank you. We have contacted some people from the Coast Guard who are members of the car clubs. One is into live steam, They are going to handle the money when we send it down. The hook is that one of there in-laws is a major owner in toys-R us and will let them buy at the stores cost for the kids.
I get flamed a lot on my posts but that is life. All I know is that this is something that my connections and busines can get done so we will.

Thanks all. we have the Rolls Royce Owners Club Rebel Region Business meeting and Ernest Hemingways Rolls coming. This should draw more people to Vote. This method was used in the past and with a field of 125 cars (we shoild be there this year) we look to raise around $2,500.00. We have some nameless people who will match whatever we raise up to $50,000.00. Also we have other functions in the club that will also raise some funds. Our charity before this mess was the restoration of the Aiken Railroad Depot and building a train display based on the 'Best Friend of Charleston"
We are also working with some other businesses for some funds that will hit about Holiday time.

Thank you, they need it. The ones who will be in worse shape are the middle class. The biggest thing I am getting is no jobs for those who had them. The feeling from the club members that we have been in contact with are they want to rebuild BUT with no place to work how. The only help they are looking for is their insurance money and a place to build.

This sounds as though it is a very worthwhile proposition. I wish I could be there to help. However, for those of us who are across the country, it is not something that we can assist with easily. For that reason, I recommend that those that are on the west coast who would like to help out either contact the Salvation Army, Red Cross or one of your local churches or schools to find out how you can help out. I know several of the churches and schools in my area are helping organize fund drives to aid Katrina's victims.

Before sending your hard earned money to someone you don't know, research the charity you are sending it to so that you know how the money is being spent. The Salvation Army distributes a large portion of their donations to those in need (usually it's at least 80% of what they receive). A lot of other charities only donate a small portion to those in need (15 to 50%).

I want to extend a hearty thanks to all those who are doing their part in providing relief for those who have lost everything they have. George, for doing your part, Thank You! Here we go back to the top. Bump!

We generally support Project Hope, as well (projecthope.org). Their mission is medical care. Their annual report says that over 90% of the donations make it to the field. So that is another option for those looking to help and can not make it to the event George is talking about.

On another thread I mentioned that my brother-in-law was with DMORT and was injured last week packing the supplies

There are MD's with DMORT, coroners, they x-rayed his knee (what he told them hurt) and they saw no damage. He was sent home and told that he could deploy as soon as he was off the crutches.

The very next day he went for physical therepy and it as terrably painful so he headed to the ER. They are used to paients that mislead them by telling them where it hurts and found a fractured tibia. It is a nondisplaced greenstick fracture (if I got the terminology right). He is going to wear an air cast and diploy at the end of the week.
