There are a number of these programs at railroad museums and tourist railroads. The ones that I know most about are unfortunately also far away. The Ffestiniog Railway and several others in Wales and England. Now that I recall, though, the Maine Narrow Gauge Railway Company & Museum, in Portland Maine also has a program like this. There are others in the US, I just can't remember where I saw them.

But, if you're looking up a site concerning a tourist railroad, see whether there's a day in the cab type of program. They're not inexpersive, but I'll bet they're a lot of fun.

I would be interested. But right now it is not possible due to a number of very good reasons.

The Chattanooga Museum has a "Rent a Diesel" program. I think it's $250 per hour. I think I'm going to do that next time we get to Chattanooga.
