just the body of a the boxcar, tanker, gondola etc? I mean, without the coupler but with the coupler box, cover and screw in place. Without the trucks but with a screw in the hole... ready for you to install what you want? Wouldn't that drop the price of each unit and we wouldn't have to pay for things all the time that we're gonna replace anyway.

No, you have to buy a complete kit or, even worse, a fully assembled model.

no not that i know of. however, if your into HO and are looking for nice CHEAP box cars, i would suggest Accurail. i think Accurail cars are VERRY good quality for $9-$12 dollars(most i have, or seen are $10). i cant think of a better or cheaper car for that amount of money. [;)][:D]

there are some companies that do this , but they're the craftsman type kits where due to complexity / detail / low production runs the car costs more anyway . if you only need a small number of cars , or very specific prototypes , or you really love building models they're great . if you need a massive number of cars to populate your layout you have to either plan to aquire them over a long period of time , or you have to be related to bill gates (kidding!)

examples...

but athearn , bachmann , walthers etc ... ?
nope

I don't have to change anything on Athearn cars, just put on a Kadee coupler, and she's good to go.

I've seen them for box cars. they were pretty$$$ and designed for semi-scratch builders
I can't find the link off hand but I made a note of your E-mail and will send a link if I find them again.

All inexpensive cars I know of come with couplers and trucks. One thing you could do with the extra couplers and trucks is save them up and sell them on eBay with maybe 10 or 12 in each auction. Then you'd get some money back.[:D]

Dtto! I have several of their 40 foot transition era box cars and they're great. I also have several of their center flo covered hoppers. Equally great!

Cheers,
