MRC Steam Synchro Sound Decoder

I have two of these decoders. The first one I have had for about 6 months and I have never had a problem with it. The one that I just purchased came with a little different manual, and it seems to have some additional features. The problem that I have with it is the sound starts out fine, and then all of a sudden it tails off to being barely audible. It is not a problem with the track since this can happen while it is sitting still. I think it may be a hardware issue (decoder getting hot, or speaker not connected well), but before I send it back, I would like to set the decoder to the default setting. Does anyone know how to do this with the 1627 decoder.
Thanks, Kevin
