Recreating this in N scale

Once I get enough money I think this engine would make an interesting model but i have never really done an engine paint job. It would be in N scale and i am pretty sure this is either an SD40 or SD40-2. What paints should I use? What decals should I use? Should I start with an undecorated Kato SD-40? Any tips for painting? At the moment I dont have an airbrush but i know someone who does and i could probably use theirs if need be.
