Ed,
Nice work. The mock ups looked great. I was pondering how you got so much track on what appeared to be the same size layout as my little 8x4...then I went back and read your intro (see above quote). DOH! That's how you got so much track on your layout. Kinda makes me want to switch to N Scale. If only I didn't have som much money on HO...[sigh]

Keep us posted on the progress....slow or not. It looks great!

I just ordered Faller's Bietschtal Bridge (N-scale) from my LHS. It looks similar to yours. I needed a bridge with a span long enough to cross a gap in my upper deck for a window that I need to access. The Bietschtal Bridge is the only one that (a) fits; (b) I liked; and (c) I could afford. My LHS should have it in about 3 weeks, and I can hardly wait. It will be my first attempt to build something.

Timothy: Yup, that's what it is, a sort of 'Americanized' version of the Beicstahl. Got it about two years ago and did just a little kit-bashing on it to make it look a little less European. It's a pretty spectacular bridge, and it goes together really well. Enjoy yours--let me see a photo of it when you get it installed, okay?

Tom,

I'd love to show you pics of it when I get it installed. But I should warn you -- don't hold your breath. I'm still at the designing stage and haven't even cleared out the layout room to start benchwork yet. I had hoped to get started this passed spring; but the house and car ate all my free cash. So, construction has been postponed until the fall. In the meantime, I'm refining my design and picking up things I'm going to need for the layout bit by bit as finances allow. As for the bridge, I should have it in about 2 weeks (the LHS placed the order on June 27 with their supplier). Then, I'll have to assemble and paint it. Maybe by the end of the year I'll have something to show.

Sorry about being so late on posting these photos. I meant to do it last week.

The back of the Challenger's pilot

The Challenger's tender

Please tell me if you can see the photos. I want to know if I did it right.

Sounds like an awesome trip, Crandell. Look forward to veiwing your pics!

An engine under steam is impressive to be around isn't it? The ride you got is a once in a lifetime thing for most train nuts. Good looks must count for something. [:D]

Hey, everyone, I am back from the best weekend ever. First, though, I am constantly amazed at the dedication, determination, and talent that everyone of you...and I mean all of you... show here each week. Can you imagine if we all got together and ran a big club? Whhoeeeeee!!

Briefly, my wife treated me to a ride on the Port Alberni Heritage Railway. As I said in an earlier post, I got to go to the House early and see the 1928 Baldwin 2-8-2T get ready. Darned if the engineer, George Williamson, didn't invite me up (musta been my incredible looks), and we chatted about all of the controls and the engine's chnaracteristics. Then we moved it to hook up, and pushed the train to the stations, about 1000 feet down the track. What a rush!!

Anyway, pictures (film) still have to be developed, but I hope to post on Mid-Week Madness.

Karl, if you're there, thanks for asking after me. I will try to post some different shots, and one of the water..fair warning, the reflection looks better than the paint job under the resin.

Guys, it is a privilege to share this forum with you. What I wouldn't give for all of us to meet at a restaurant one morning for a long brunch.

From what I can tell, your track plan has many opportunities for both operating and scenery. Very Good! [^]

I'm actually in Nfld. I'm in Paradise. Looks like a move to B.C. might be in the cards, though.

My eventual goal is to build a model of the CN/Terratransport prototype that was here, set in 1982. I won't be doing it in narrow gauge, though. Hard to find models of the Nf-210's and G8's that were used here, too. I might go with GP7's and GP9's because they look like a blend of both those types if they got mashed together. So long as it looks familiar it should be ok, if not 100% accurate.

Of course, if I find a good way to model them accurately then I will. [:)]

QUOTE: Grande man: Which prototype are you modeling?

Actually it’s freelanced. It’s set in the area where I live, northern Veracruz state, somewhere in the 1945-1960 (+/- 10 years) time frame. It’s supposedly an independently operated division of the NdeM. In real life they never built such a line through here, although there were lots of plans. There were a few narrow gauge industrial railroads in the area, unconnected, mainly serving the oil fields in the area.

Yeah, that’s where N shines. You have to put up with some difficulties too, but there are some good tradeoffs. I could have never had so much scenery and track in the same space in HO.

Hey Newfie_Bullet. Are you actually in Nfld or just using the name for sentimental reasons? I’m originally from Port Union, Trinity Bay.

I'm very slowly (and I mean VERY!) accumulating materials so I don't have much to share. But while I'm waiting for some stuff, a friend was kind enough to give me some of his old Bachmann stuff to play around with.

I figured I'd practice some weathering on some free junk before I "ruin" a good model.

I think it turned out pretty good. [:D]

I don't normally participate in WPF because at my rate of progress I seldom have anything worth showing, and also because I tend to hang out over at The Coffee Shop. Today being different, I had to show off my latest small step on the layout (which is N scale on a 3' x 6'-8" HCWD). Except for a very small space under the bridge, the entire layout now has a layer of basic ground cover in place! What a difference it makes in the looks of the layout. Amazing how long it has taken me to get this far. You should be glad I wasn’t in charge of construction of the ark. Anyway, here’s an overview shot.

Here’s one at a slightly lower angle showing the yard area.

And here’s one with my cardboard and foam building mock-ups in place, just to give you some idea of how it’s eventually supposed to work.

Still lots to do, including shrubs, tall weeds, underbrush, trees, buildings, people, ballasting track, lettering engines and rolling stock for my freelanced road, etc………… I’m in no danger of running out of stuff to do. Maybe by next year I'll have enough progress to share again.

I do enjoy looking at all your work week in and week out.

Best regards

Ed

One more before I sign off--this is a Rio Grande Challenger (a Baldwin, not one of those UP clones) crossing Bullard's Bar Bridge with a string of FGEX reefers. The Rio Grande painted warning stripes on the front sandboxes of all of their Challengers to make them more visible at grade crossings. #3704 was the only one to have the stripes painted yellow. At least on MY railroad, LOL!

Congrats on the new camera. I don't know squat about photography, but have been told that a small aperture and long exposure time is the ticket to good field of veiw for taking model pics. I borrowed a buddies camera a while back and did manage to take some more focused pics (than my el cheapo camera) but to really get it right would take some experimenting.

This is a coal train passing Bassets on the way to Yuba Summit. The lead helper is an ex-Denver and Salt Lake 2-6-6-0, the road loco is an ex N&W 2-8-8-2, one of those P2K USRA's that REALLY needs a helper!

Ex D&SL 2-6-6-0, now Rio Grande #3370. Cute lil' ol' thang, isn't she? She's a PFM brass import from the '70's, and runs like the proverbial Swiss watch.
