Hi there Fellow UP Modeler!!!
What you are attempting to do is going to be tricky!!! I have heard that there are way's(And products available) of removing factory printing and decals off of models, but so far I have not had the guts to try them. Basically I don't want to run the risk of damaging the paint work!!(Damaging a UP paint scheme would be UNTHINKABLE..Ha Ha!!).
Here is something I could suggest( Keeping in mind I have never done this as I model Union Pacific in 1996 and don't model their new FLAG SCHEME!). You could mask off the "UNION PACIFIC" and airbrush some matching 'Armour Yellow' over lettering to erase it( I would do very thin coat's each time and let each one dry throughly before I did the next). Then apply your decals in the usual way and fini***he job with a few good layers of GLOSS COAT. This should hide any irregularities in the paint work caused by the masking. Since the prototype you are modeling currently has a showroom shine...it will look great.
I would try my method out on a scrap piece of sheet plastic first, before I tried it on my model!!
I hope I have been of some help!!

I was going to post a thread to everyone about a GREAT product I used last night to do exactly what your talking about. I can't say for sure that it will work on every decal out there but it worked like an eraser on my P2K Soo SD60s and 60Ms.
I used Microscale's Microsol on a Q-tip. I swabbed the Microsol on the decal, let it set for about 5~10 minutes and then used both the Q-tip dipped in Microsol and a clean Q-tip to rub the decal off. You may have to use an X-acto knife to get it started. It came right off and with a little clean up you would never notice that there was decal there.
Let me know if this works for you.

thanks Terry,
seems like there isnt to many UP people in this forum.funny thing was i use to( well still) have alot of SP units, just the last few years have been leanning over to UP. I live in Ohio and im seeing more and more UP power slipping thru, and i saw the SD70 with the flag on it, and fell in love with it, so i knew then i HAD TO HAVE IT (hehehehe)im working on the SD90mac45 what a wonderful model!
i tried the alcohol, and rubed and it seems to be taking the decal off and not the paint, so im going to see how that goes on 1 side..... engineer side of course(hehehe)
lets keep in touch

Not a bit. Although I wouldn't recommend putting "elbow" grease into though. I tried rubbing alcohol and it rubbed the paint but didn't even touch the decal.
To be specific about the Microsol I used it was the Microsol for uneven surfaces. It had red printing on the bottle. I think it is a strong solution then the normal setting solution.

Hi there!!
Glad to see you are getting some where!! I own two SD90/43MAC's in UP. They are the flagships of my loco fleet for 1996!! The SD9043MAC's have a 4300HP powerplanr in them, not a 4500!! This is just me being a know it all!! It is a bit of a story about the differences between the SD90/43MAC and the straight SD90Mac....I could fill you in sometime if you want?(then again you might already know.
I would love to keep in touch...you are right there are really not that many UP modelers on this forum...but hey let's start a REVOLUTION. I think that UP is the greatest railroad that ever existed( Cool down everyone else who is reading this...just my OPINION..Ha Ha!!). I would like to get some SP and CNW into my roster eventualy!!
Give us your e-mail address so we can chat!! If you want!!
See you later!

FYI:
well the decals are now removed... i used 97% alcohol.....seems to have worked well, looks like Athern put on enough paint on. a little rubbed off but not into the shell.
it did take so time, so dont think it will just be instant. took probably.... 30 mins to rub off union pacific, and the #'s on both sides.( so pop in your fav rail tape and watch and rub.. it will be done before you know it.
