Actually having a "Big engine" is pretty cool. There are many engines in my stable but only 2 or 3 that I call on when the train gets heavy.

Or you can keep adding engines until the darn train actually got moving.

A string of 0-4-0 docksides must be quite a sight dragging a heavy 100 car hoppers of coal up the grade...

The SD-90MAC is the largest single engined diesel, isn't it? About as large as a diesel can get.

BTW--You soon will be able to get a BLI AC-4 (a big engine) without sound for around $310. Just wait.

I've got two SP C44-9W's (one pwd, one dmy) that live in boxes until I have a layout big enough for them to come out and play... at which time the powered unit will also get a DCC treatment.

By a narrow margin, a Virginian 2-8-8-0 - the largest remnant of the unsuccessful Triplex, which Westside did in brass. It creeps right along and it's powerful - two motors - and for some reason it was much cheaper than most brass articulateds - probably not much demand for it. Not strictly prototypical for a Western-themed railroad, but I like it.

So far my biggest are two AC4400's that have been modified with an additional 12 ounces of lead each for increased tractive effort. So far so good. Pulling cars up hills is NO problem. Just bought an Athearn dual-motor DD40, but haven't run it yet or modified it. Plan on tuning it up and maxing out the weight.

I'd like to get a Big Boy and a Challenger to round out the steamers, as right now I only have un-articulated steamers.

My biggest engine is a BLI PRR T-1 Duplex. This is a 4-4-4-4 class, but is a rigid frame for the two sets of drivers that do not articulate in corners. It requires VERY gentle turns to keep from going "off roading".

Lots of them. All steam, all articulated. If you take TE (tractive effort), in descending order, I have:
2 M-4 Yellowstone 2-8-8-4
1 Rio Grande L-131 2-8-8-2
4 Southern Pacific AC 4-8-8-2
1 Rio Grande USRA 2-8-8-2
1 C&O 'Allegheny' 2-6-6-6
1 Norfolk & Western A 2-6-6-4
1 Rio Grande (ex Norfolk & Western) USRA 2-8-8-2
2 Rio Grande L-105 4-6-6-4
1 Rio Grande L-97 4-6-6-4
I have others, but those are the biggest.

My LL 2-8-8-2 Mallet and the BLI J-1 PRR. Between these two depending on curves I can get it done. Might have to double the grade with more than 24 cars on the mallet.

However I have a full ABBA FA Alco lash up all powered. I gaurantee that I can pull all of my cars with these working together.

My "big" engine is a Trix Big Boy. I also have a Rivarossi Challenger that had a fatal enounter with my cat. Still watching for a replacement. Also watching for a good deal on a Cab Forward and Turbine.

The bigger the better!

My "big" engine is a Rivarossi Big Boy, but I also have two Lionel Challengers and two Rivarossi 4-8-4's. My "big" diesels would have to be my PA-1/PB-1 Combo or my E-6 A/B Combo. I like almost any type of locomotive, but it's the big ones that have gotten most of my attention.

Standing between the rails, it's coming toward you, its monsterous.
Its an Alco S2.

I've also had the UP 3985 try to suck me in. I was about 30 feet from the track on an outside curve. She came by about 80 mph. Seems a whole lot bigger from that point of view.

So an HO scale man 3/4" tall would find the biggest in my fleet an NP 2-8-8-4 Yelllowstone. Brass don't remember the brand. Drive train totally reworked with NWSL gear boxes, can motor. Have never found its pulling limit, at 65 cars I run out of room.

BLI Hudson, but I hope to get a (brass? [:P]) FEF and/or a 2-10-4 Selkirk/Texan sometime before I go either blind, broke, or croak. The really big stuff is just too "busy", and not in my background, so no great allure for me.
