I'm interested in modeling the Chicago Suburban Commuter trains (Metra). Are there any back issues of MR or other resources that could get me started in this direction? Thanks.

Hi there!
I had a look around the net for you and found quite a bit of information. I did not have time to see if there was a roster or anyhting...but I am sure there will be. At least there is something to have a look at that might get you off to a start.
See ya!!

Get those Walther's bilevels and you're halfway there!

Start with the Walthers bi-levels and F40PH. This would be correct for all the Metra lines except BNSF.
As far as modeling goes, the best bet would be to ride the trains, bringing a camera to take pictures.
You'd probably want to build some sort of around the walls layout to include all the features of the Metra system.
Some of the modelgenic features include:
Clyborn (Junction of UP NW and North Line)
South Deering (bascule bridge)
Mayfair (Milwaukee Road/UP NW Line crossing)
Jefferson Park (2 level station)
Union Avenue (BNSF curve)
Naperville Curve
Rock Island "branch line" through Chicago's south side.
Milwaukee Road North Line (Roundout - Fox Lake)
