turntable & roundhouse space

Can someone tell me how much space I would realistically need to install an Atlas or Walthers turntable and roundhouse?

In HO Atlas----2 1/2 feet x 2 1/2 feet
walthers-about the same

In N Atlas----2 foot x 2 foot
walthers-about the same

I more sure about the N scale then the HO scale cause I am building a turntable and roundhouse setup from the Walthers model kits.

I would have to say the the 2.5' x 2.5' is pretty close. I have just started building the Roundhouse and Turntable from Atlas on a 5'x9' layout. I'm using two kits to make a six stall structure with a couple spots next to it. It's a good project. It is kinda tight but I think that it will look and fit quite well.
Good Luck. John

For large steam you'll need a minimum of a 13" (95') my 4-8-4 with tender will just fit. Add 6-8" for transition betwen turntable and roundhouse and another 14" for the roundhouse and you've got your 2 1/2'. A workable service area with ash pit, coal & water towers, and a sand house covers just shy of 4 1/2' x 3'. I've found mine works best on a dead end peninsula, but I've seen some very nice set ups in just under 3' square. Look at some old photos, they really packed it in tight.

The more that I look at it the more I can use my imagination. When I get ready to build my big Layout the Turntable and Roundhouse will be in a prominent corner of the Layout. I think, since it takes up alot of square footage, that would be the best spot for it. (either inside or outside corner)

Model Railroader has a book called "Locomotive Servicing Terminals" that can give you lots of ideas, but you can also make improvements on their suggestions. A corner installation is a good one too, If you run a track around the back of it, just be sure you can reach it. First Law of Model Railroading - "If you can't reach it, It will give you problems" :)
