More here: http://www.cnwhs.org/memberphotos/thumbnails.php?album=search&type=full&search=kate+shelly

Check out the photo section, great pics and more being added all the time. Any one can submit pics and it's becoming a great source for modelling.

I always liked the CNW. Growing up in Richfield MN in the 60's one of our neighbors worked for the Northwestern (though he'd probably still be saying he worked for 'the Omaha'). At Halloween I usually dressed as an engineer (of course) and he'd give me a big handful of official RR pencils that I would use the rest of the year at school. Kinda wished I had saved a few now. In fact all contact I've had with CNW employees while railfanning etc. were good.

I was lucky and managed to get up to the U.P. (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) and photograph the C-628's in ore service, have a couple of them on my layout now.

Hi John,

Are you familiar with the Palatine, Lake Zurich & Wauconda? The PLZ&W met the C&NW at the Palatine Depot, and headed out thru Lake Zurich and ended at Wauconda. Died off in the Depression, but there is still a ROW in certain places.

I make a drive into Chicago three times a week down the Kennedy Expressway and can see to my knowledge one siding for Lee Lumber and then a small yard Opposite the North Ave exit which is switched by two UP Geeps and a CP . I am still trying to figure why a CP engine would switch this yard. Anyway, just wanted to give you mt 2 cents worth.

Yes, I like it also. I love seeing them in original paint. There are a few Geeps out there at Elevators still in the green and yellow.

I found this pic at this site (Unfortunately, I did not take it). http://eje.railfan.net

Although I live in Indiana I always liked the Cowboy Line-which ws supposed to have gone to the West Coast, the Escanaba branch with its FM power, and a Wisconsin branch which went thru Manitou state park. The old C&NW was an interesting railroad.

Just checking in... I lived off the EJ&E South of West Chicago. I use to watch CNW in WC, Winfield and Wheaton. When I was a kid, we use to ride the CNW & BN into the city about 50/50. This was before Metra of course. I remember when the UP power started sneaking into the consists. I was sorry to see it go. I'm in CA now, and the Pacific Harbor Line has a chopped SD that is still in CNW colors. I have a shot here: http://eje.railfan.net/dpdp/photos_rrgallery/rr01.jpg

Hi All:

As previously stated, I grew up with the Illinois Central North West division which ran thru Freeport Illinois. When I was very young under the age of 10 I use to watch all the steam freight engines and an ocassional passanger train hauling freight to and from Chicago and points south.
When we moved to Chicago, I became a great fan of the CNW. I use to get on my bike and ride to the CNW yards and to the repair shops at Chicago Avenue and Halsted street just west of the old Montgomery Wards warehouse. They use to service all the steam engines there which were used for the commuter lines. I too had a ton of photos of the repair yard but over the years they got tossed in the trash by my Mom when I moved out of the house. Boy I wish I would of kept those pictures.
I am glad that my son Carl has taken up the CNW in his train layout. It is a thrill to see the CNW reborn on his layout. What a shame that all the great local railroads have gone the way of the scrap yards. The Great northern, Illinois Central ,Milwaukee, the CNW, the Great Western and many more. Progress brings on change which is nothing we can stop I guess. Great railroads and great people that ran them are gone forever.
I am so glad that guys and gals like yourself are keeping the railroads alive with teriffic models.

love you all:
Don

I couldn't begin to imagine the scope and size of doing a dedicated layout to that or any of the Metra lines, even in N scale I'd probably need 500 feet of mainline. But *** would it be fun to build!

Even though I moved away from Homewood and out of Illinois some 11 years ago, I still miss all the railroading going through that area. The Chicago area has some fantastic things to model. I've always wanted to do the Metra Electric line from University Park to Randolph Street and maybe the Rock Island route from Joliet, so I guess I sorta count in the C&NW thing.....

Grew up in Elmhurst, IL just West of Proviso. While the CNW main was a bit across town, the former CGW was just a block away, and before it was completely torn up, it ended just this side of Salt Creek. We'd go to the end of the track and look for a headlight in the distance, if we saw it, we'd run as fast as we could so we could watch them switch out the Ovaltine plant that was across the creek in Villa Park. Talk about wishing I had taken pictures!
I went on to do a stint with them as a yardman at Proviso.

I've got a little info on the Cowboy Line in Wyoming posted on my website. These links take you to most of it:

http://www.thecbandqinwyoming.com/Lander%20Branch.htm

Click on the Lander History button - that page has some pretty good info on the line to Lander, Wyoming.

This one provides a brief very brief)timeline of events on the C&NW in Wyoming:
