Who's seen their proto-type.
Posted by SpaceMouse on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 5:36 PM
I guess with small lines you can see anything. The wierd thing was not seeing the prototype engine, which from all the rail-fan pictures I've seen operates an hour and a half west of me, but that it was mu'ed with two SW1500s hauling 50+ hoppers of ballast.

No one will believe it if I model it.

I kind of went at it the other way around... I saw a picture of an Amtrak in phase III with two P-42s at the head pulling a baggage car and full consist of passenger cars, which I thought looked so cool I went out and bought a set just like it, but as far as modeling first and then seeing the engine, no sir, I can't say that I've been that lucky.

I voted "bledder-bledder-bledder-bledder" just 'cause no one else had.

My loco's aren't around anymore, so I doubt I'll see them. Dave

I have seen a few of the engines I model--CCT 70-ton GE #30, Sacramento Northern #402, SN #712 (formerly WP 712--or is it 711? I forget.) and most of the handful of remaining Sacramento Northern electric power. I haven't seen a WP S1 or one of the GE 44-tonners in SN colors in person, but then I haven't been up to Portola yet.

Depends on how tightly you define prototype... that B&P GP38 you speak of got turned into an ersatz W&P GP39-2 on my W&P layout.

Dave, I voted bledder just 'cuz'....that's it......just cuz. But darn you, you beat me to it. [:D]

I am ashamed to say that I can only recall seeing, in actual operations, a Conny, a Garratt, and whatever I might have seen in the INCO yards around Sudbury back in the mid-50's. I was three or four then, so I can't say what they were. All I can say is it was a deep-rooted and abiding affection for steam at first sight.

Yup, bledder works for me.

Thanks, Mouse. You rock.

Hey Chip,
Just for kicks I enter "bledder" in the online American Heritage Dictionary. It said "no matches
found for bledder... did you mean bladder?". And for some reason I felt the need to visit
the restroom [%-)]. Dave

I have seen the GG1. But the Ma&Pa steam engines were scrapped.
Enjoy

The only engines I have of which I have seen the actual prototype are:

B&P 2000: see this critter all the time in the Butler yard

B&LE 904: caught this tunnel motor many times on the Bessemer (NOT CN)

B&LE 727, 721B, 728: these F units ran literally through my backyard on a regular basis until 1992.

I've not to my recollection seen a Reading GP-7 or RS-3, but I'll bet I did and just don't remember it. I certainly didn't see any Reading FAs.I have seen T-1's 2102 and 2124, but not in operation. I've ridden over former Reading rails but none of the equipment was former Reading. Oh yeah 've seen a few more locos, an Alco 630 and a 430, FP7, SW1, GP30 - oh wait, they DO have an RS-3.

I have a few Guilford MEC GP40's ( HO and N, 2 different numbers). I don't know If I've ever seen them, but I might have when I went to maine last year. My hotel room had windows facing the tracks! As for my other stuff, I have never seen a GP60M, CF7, Any other western units, auto racks, well cars, or any 6 axle unit in real life. It sucks living in a "dry" 9 (railroadless) town[:(]

I still have not voted since I have seen some while I have not seen others.

Well, since I model Rio Grande and SP steam, all I can say is that I saw a lot of the SP steam I've got on my layout, and as a kid I rode some, too. But when it comes to Rio Grande, by the time I got to Colorado in the 1960's, all was diseasel, and Rio Grande didn't preserve any of their standard gauge steamers, except for little #538. But since I just got a brass model of #538 a couple of weeks ago, I suppose that I can say I've seen Rio Grande standard-gauge steam, huh?

PS: Oh, yah, saw the above at a museum in Minnesota about ten years ago. It's wheels were turning. Does that count?

I've got NKP 587 and 765 in my collection, and have been lucky enough to have cab rides in both steamers. 765 never ran on the NKP line I'm modelling, but I don't think anyone will really care!

I wish I had seen real Southern locomotives in action. So no, I have not seen any of the locomotives that I model in real life.

QUOTE: I wish I had seen real Southern locomotives in action

They were a sight: and I saw them only in the Seventies and Eighties, when they were museum pieces on fan trips. If you like Southern steam (and only my affection for the Colorado Rockies seduced me away from my lifelong affection for the SRR), there's always the railroad museum in Chattanooga (where 4501 still runs), and, if you're in Asheville, a dilapidated 722 sits down by the Biltmore under an open shed. If you get to DC, you can see and hear 1401 in the Smithsonian's Museum of American History, too. There's also quite a bit of interesting stuff at the railroad museum in Spencer, NC - an old Southern division point.

The SRR in its day was a great railroad, and I can't see an NS train without missing "Southern Gives A Green Light to Progress" or "Southern Serves the South." It was a very personable operation: I even met Graham Claytor once, the only man I've ever seen in a suit on a fan trip, every bit the gentlemen he was reputed to be.

Step 1: See prototype
Step 2: Buy undec model
Step 3: Paint and decal undec model to resemble prototype

I've never been lucky enough to buy a factory-painted model and then spot the big 'un...

My model railroad is 100% freelance...So that kind of makes it the proto-type...so from that point of view I see it everyday[(-D]

There's one preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum, and just before they got bought out by IC&E, Illinois Rail Link had at least one running, usually stationed at Davis Junction. The last time I saw it was 2003.
