What layout people would you like to see produced ?...
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 1:09 PM
There's a great variety of layout people out there to be had in all scales now a days, and I've seen everything from nude sun bathers to astronuats. However, I have as of yet to see people playing golf in N scale...

Are there any people that you would like to see produced that don't exist at the present time ?.

I cant think of any specifics right now, the people I would like to see produced though are 'individuals'. The thing that strikes me is that the figures are packed generally in 5 or 6, even figures that you would only need 1 or 2 of, eg traffic police. I see a figure(or 2) that I can envisage on my layout in a situation, but then I have to buy the whole set of 5/6 which I'm not prepared to do and leave the rest in the drawer.
I also bought 2 different sets of 120 unpainted prieser figures(great value/must paint) only to disapointedly find their was a high proportion of repetition of figures, I know I can adapt them, as I will, but more variation would have been nice. Just my 2c grumble.

Have fun & be safe.

I brought simular (probably even the same) Preiser set(s) - the standing crowd and the sitting people - yes, it's true that there is repetition (up to 4 of the same figure), but I was able to make 2 unique sets of one person by painting different colors schemes (and in a few cases, different races - latino, black, or asian where possible), and then the other copies of people went into stores, buildings, stations, etc. The sitting people were sanded down and adapted for vehicle passenger/drivers and railroad passengers.
There are some one I can't use, such as the wedding party (with horse carriage driver w/ whip), or the people in parkas/heavy coats as my modules are set in Early Fall (and there are only so many store windows that can use manniquins).
In the end, you can also melt down the handful of completely unadaptable ones with some liquid cement and make a plastic putty [^]

Trainluver1, keep an eye on Woodland Scenics - they are introduction HO golfers in their scenic accent series, and they may eventually do so for N scale too.

Go to this site, it's where I buy all of my figures. They are the cheapest I've found, and if they're not, they will beat it. Quick shipping from FL as well! Scroll down to the bottom of the page to find your N scale golfers.

Re : first time lay out.

I'am starting my first time lay out. It will be HO scale and I would like to know how far apart to run roadbeds on straight runs, Also on 22" , 18" , 15" raduis
I plan to use 22", 18", raduis on main line only. There is a possible I might need to use a 15" raduis on main line. Will I have any trouble with this. If so what should
I expect?

Uh, I think you need to start a new thread (topic) on this subject. This thread is about figures, not trackwork.[:D]

1shado1 - you might look at Preiser's "Night People" or Woodland Scenics "Rebels" for the kind of folks you might not want your kids to hang out with. Check the rocousa site above, or DiscountTrainsOnline, for pictures of some of these.

In general, I'm amazed at what is already being made. I haven't found coal miners, but it wouldn't be that hard to adapt track workers for that job. I'd certainly like to see a greater ethnic mix - both from a "social justice" standpoint, and just to be more true to prototype. There are a few characters that Preiser sells in single units - I've picked up a mermaid and a Grim Reaper. I was also told at the last train show I went to that Preiser was phasing out its line of animals, so if you see some you want, now's the time to buy.

Sorry for the double post. It was either a computer glitch, or Preiser made 2 copies of their "Herr Beasley" model, painted differently, and we both posted at the same time. [:D]

Interesting question - I can't think of any right at the moment, but I'm sure there are some others that could be done.

Actually, I kinda like having a few duplicates in the unpainted sets - I just do some "plastic" surgery on the extras with a sharp Xacto, some glue, and a little Squadron putty, and can come up with a completely different-looking person.

LOL![:D] I used some of the swimmers and Adam/Eve figures to populate a a 1/87th "gentlemen's club" on my layout (probably not too many of those out there!) - after all, I figured those little railroaders needed a place they could go to blow off some steam after a hard day of shuttling freight cars...hehehehe!!

Langley Miniature Models in the UK makes a set of white metal figures that is described as X-rated! On the package it states that the contents is of an adult nature and contains five people and a dog! God only knows what the dog is getting up to! [(-D][:-^]

Trainluver1, preiser makes an N scale golfing figure set, page 134 of the scenic express catalogue (PR79072), I am sure they will be stocked elsewhere.

Have fun & be safe.

I was doing an N scale military/naval base scene. "Minifigs" has military drivers in sitting position- usable for both military and construction workers-- and soldiers in fighting/ firing positions. Not much military standing around, marching, doing routine maintenance, etc. the kind of stuff that would fit with a railroad spur used for base supply.

I am planning an island seaport with an amusement district which will include a ritzy nightclub at the end of a pleasure pier paralleling the railroad casueway to the island. I want some Guy Lombardo/Glenn Miller type dance band musicians. I am pretty sure I can get customers in evening clothes, maybe even dancers. But the specific type of musicians...

Actually, I'd like to see some more forest critters. I know we've got deer and bear, but how about some bobcats, mountain lions, beaver, coyote, critters like that? As it stands right now, I've got so many deer in the Tahoe National Forest, they're starting to form Club Chapters. I could use some PREDATORS!

1870-1890s Frontiersmen and women. I've been looking for a cowboy kneeling, or sitting a horse, etc. and there are very few choices. It would be a drag if all my figures were different variations of 5 or 6 figures.

I want HO size people that run on solar cells and can be programed to drive the small cars on my layout, operate live steam locomotives, and walk up and down the sidewalks of the few cities on the layout. I want the same type of little people to perform all the railroad related jobs, like mechanic, brakeman, conductor. And I want a controller that allows all or any of these people to be reprogramed to perform other functions when the layout is not operating, like maintenance, rail cleaning, dusting and stuff like that. Otherwise, the current offerings of static plastic folks suits me just fine. Cut and bend 'em. Repaint them. They will continue to work just fine until the replacements arrive.

What I don't see is many "workers" suitable for the loading platforms of trackside industries. There is one set available now, and I have backdated these figures by altering their hardhats into 30's soft caps.

Coal miners. Never seen them except for old west style hermit miners. I saw where prieser was listing some rather good looking ones this year byt they have yet to produce them???

I've been looking for a set of railfans. The closest I can come is a set of ex-railfans in black and white striped outfits.
I wonder if there would be a set of recognizable model railroaders? I have a set of "statesmen" for 20 years ago, but the only 2 still in business are Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
Possibly a variey of Locomotive crew -- can't have the same 2 guys driving everything.
