numbering turn outs for DCC control

I've read several articles where the author talked about numbering turnouts for DCC control such as painting a number right on the turnout. It seems to me that a better way to mark them would be to place a "mile marker post close to the turnout with the decoder address #on it. It wold unobtrusive and look almost as though it belonged there.
