I just wondered if anyone had experience with one of these. The directions with the engine did not mention how to open the front coupler pocket. I am kind of wary about prying around on it until something gives. The front pocket on their Mogul looks identical and no, the Mogul's instructions did not mention how to open the front couple pocket. The guys at my LHS weren't sure either. I would appreciate any help available.

If all that you want to do is switch the Rapido for the MDC knuckle coupler, you can twist out the Rapido and twist in the MDC. Take care lest you launch the spring into floorandcarpetoblivionland.
I do not like the MDC knuckle couplers. You are better off converting to MTs. I make a few cuts to the MDC coupler box and glue in the Z scale coupler. I used Walthers. Either locomotive, the mogul or the consolidated, from the pilot, will pull ten N scale freight cars on a one-per-cent grade and the couplers show no signs of giving on mine--I have not tried any more than that. I have one mogul where I screwed in a 1015. The N scale coupler looks pretty clunky on the pilots of these; the Z scale looks much better.

Will the Zscale microtrain couplers work with Nscale microtrain couplers? Switching all of my cars over to smaller couplers would be too expensive to contemplate.

As long as the couplers are at the correct height, the Z and N will work together without any problem. Using Z scale couplers in the pilots is a fairly common upgrade for N scale steam.

Try looking at this current thread from over at the TrainBoard N scale forum which discusses this very thing.:
http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/9/t/005854.html
The following thread, also from the TrainBoard N scale forum, is interesting because of the photos showing the difference between N scale couplers and Z scale couplers on N scale equipment.

There have also been other detailed threads discussing coupler replacement on MDC steam locos in the past on the TrainBoard N scale forum. You might try searching for other threads there. Here's one other:
