MR Back Issue
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 27, 2002 11:17 PM
I know this may be a tough question, but?? Sometime between 1960 & 1967, MR published a photo in the Monthly Award Winner page of a Grocery Store, 2 story, with a 1 story Post Office separate on the left side. It was scratchbuilt. I desparately need that issue or a copy of that page. Can someone please help??? whoma@bellsouth.net

I just flipped through all the issues of MR from 1960-67[contents pages], and they didn't run the 'Model of the Month'in those years.Still if anyone can identify the issue, I'd be glad to copy what you need and mail it to you.Good luck & regards / Mike

Thank you for trying to locate that MR for me. I'll have to try to research it further. It may have even been a later issue or maybe even in RMC. But I know it was there, because I built it (scratch) from the picture. Thank you, Bill

Bill,

Any chance it could have been the July 1956 Model Railroader? M.B. Wakefield has an article in that issue about a two-story grocery with an adjacent one-story post office. The post office is on the right when looking at the structure from the street side. Wakefield was pretty prolific. Last citation I found for him when searching the online magazine index was in 1976 in the NMRA bulletin, so it's also possible a photo of the grocery ran somewhere in the 1960s, or someone else may have built his grocery and put the post office on the left side.

This article is on pages 24-29, and includes detailed plans for scratch building, several pictures, and even an interior plan for the front of the post office. You can order a photo copy of the article from our customer service department, at CustomerService@kalmbach.com.

If that's not it, try searching the online index. An individual photo may be hard to find, but since the index covers several magazines, including RMC as well as MR, you may find it. Good luck.

Thanks Tom. I received the photo-copied pages and they were worth every penny of the $5.00. That was the original plans. I never had these. the only one I saw was a on page photo of this model. I have looked thru most issues in the 60's. It could have been in MR from 68-70's, maybe. I would still like to find that one also.

Update: I recently found out that the above photo was in a 1970's issue. I have already gone through all of 1972 with no luck. The actual plans were in a 1965 issue. But, I still need the one from a 70's issue of MR that was a model of the month award winner. Someone please help. Thanks.

I just went through the contents pages of all MR issues from 1970-71 and 1973 thru 1979. Cannot find a Model of the Month with the buildings you describe. Unless I have somehow missed it.

Mike; Iwas in a hobby shop the other day and a man told me that general store & post office was in an issue of MR between 1964 & 1969. I'm about to give up. Thanks, Bill
