Sorry Agro--I wanted to get to bed and didn't know when you were going to post.

These are the newest additions to the Hogwart's Fleet. Three more are coming later this weekend--I hope.

Thanks Tom--I should have known better.

Yep, Chip. The horizonal pics expand; the vertical don't. Nice paint job on the Hogwart's Express.

Chip--I believe I spy one of those neat Roundhouse 30' wood cabeese, right? I've got about three on my Yuba Sub, and they're really neat little critters. Nice photos, BTW--wish I could get my camera to get up that close.
Here's some SP action on the Yuba Sub--

SP 2-10-2 'Deck' #3633 waiting for AC-6 Cab-forward #4137 to clear the westbound main at Sierra City.

AC-5 #4120 at Bassetts, just below Yuba Summit with an eastbound manifest.

i've gone on an SP kick this week, maybe next week I'll run some of the foreign 'borrowed' power.

Chip, we are getting into that part of the year where a lot of people start doing things outside. Over on the Garden Railways forum things are picking up, while those of us who play in the basement are distracted by other activities.

That said, here are a few pictures of my interactive display at last weekend's train show in Menomonie, Wisconsin.

Here's the one of a kind driveline for my SD44M. The drive is basically an athearn motor with the biggest flywheels I could fit in the shell. A couple of A-line coupling kits and a lot of dremel work later you get the drive. Put in a TCS decoder for smooth running, pop in an LED and this is what you get. The shell is in the paint shop still, with any luck I can show it next week.

I'm slowly getting there. Slowly. Here's an ariel shot of the area near the larger bridge. A large percent of the track is ballasted. When I get access to more masonite, I shall run more back drop along that wall.

Also in this shot you can see my bed in its daytime position under my layout.

Uh, yeah. I'm hoping the decals will tone it down a bit. I'm also going to intersperce local freight like SP and ATSF.I have this wierd thing about Hogwart's as a prototype. Their stuff doesn't get dirty. One of those magic things, I think. I got an Atlas GP-38 just so I could muck one up. Also, all the non-Hogwarts Rolling Stock of the period are going to get weathered.

Since O scale is bigger, won't that take up more picture space and slow down the server? [D)]

Sorry, guys, I couldn't resist. No potshots, please! [X-)] I'm glad to see some O scale modeling pictures!

Ok, heres my first post in here. Recent work done includes.....

plastering and repairing sheetrock and then painting the backdrop. (and yes thats an Upsidedown Tree, rare but indiginous to 'Pineridge'

Then this week I planted the 150 or so trees that have been sat on the bench for 2-3 weeks.

And then overnight half the town appeared in tempoary trial positions.

And finally the over view so far, 6 months in.

More pics at link below.

Have fun & be safe.

This is the first time in quite a while that I've posted to WPF. I've got a few photos to share. As you can tell I need to redo the roads and the surrounding scenery, but that will be done this summer and hopefully I'll have some better photos to share then. But, here's what I've got for now:

WSOR 4001, an SD40-2 passes by one of the crossings between the towns of Appleton and Rivermoor in Wisconsin.

And on the rear of the train, WSOR X-103, the transfer caboose, has come along to be used in a long back up move later in the day. I scratchbuilt this model last summer, it's one of my prize models, the only thing I've scratchbuilt.

Andy my latest project is paitning and detailing an Athearn GP38. I'm painting it for Wisconsin and Southern Railroad 3803, in the same scheme as 4001 is above(although I didn't paint that one, that was done by Athearn). I've been adding things like grab irons, ditch lights(which I plan on lighting eventually), sun shades, ect. Here's a few photos:

Karl, super execution! Nice stuff. I really like your rock faces as well as your water. How did you blend the paint so that the water looks like it gets deeper gradually? Where do you go from here?

Wow! Another weekend of great pictures. You guys have done some outstanding work. I am proud to be on this forum with you.

Here is mine. This was today and it is what happens when you are not paying attention and have a turnout the wrong way. The good news is that the Yard Master was not hurt, but his secretary took off running and hasn't been seen since. [:O][:I][:-^]

Thanks guys,
I painted and repainted the entire rock face 5 times before I was happy with it, the last time I took a deep breath, painted it all back to white with Kiltz Latex Primerdid it AGAIN and that is the result. After trying to blend the WS earth tones and other 'rock type' colours to get a good blend I struck on an easier 3 step method, a combination of techniques I read(i did a lot of reading) online from the masters website tips pages.
1: turn the lights on and anywhere there is a natural shadow use a black wash.
2:pretty much paint 75% of the rest with slightly watered down raw sienna acrylic craft paint(splotch it on with a 1-2" brush overlapping the black somewhat),let dry

3:in the slightly recessed areas which arent true shadow go back and splotch on some more raw sienna, I found that the raw sienna in one coat gives a rusty/iron ore colour but if you put another coat over the top it darkens considerably to a browny rock colour.
(at this point I was getting worried and thought I would need to do it a sixth time.) But...
4:paint it all with thinned acrylic sandstone wash, maybe twice in some areas, this lightens and blends it all nicely IMHO, it also gives a nice 'dusty' kind of appearance. job done.

I spent two days trying to get it right (in my eyes) and in the end the final method I used was the simplest, quickest(about 20 mins for 8' of rockmoulds) and yielded the best results, I wi***his had been my first method to try.

As for the water Crandall after much reading (you can never gather too much info/advice on a subject before you start the project (IMO) I first placed my trestle and chalked wher the river needed to flow

then I routed out the MDF (wow that was messy) 1/4" deep

then painted the edges (1/3 of width) of the rive base with a colour slightly darker than the talus I was going to use. Then I painted the center of the river bed black(remaining center 1/3), I only blended this slightly at this point, and let it dry. 30 mins later I went back with a soft 1" brush, wet it in clean water and blended away, I found this method of blending gave a smother transition rather than trying to blend the two wet colours directly after painting. I then sealed the riverbed with hi-gloss poly, added the talus and poured the epoxy.(all with drying time in between obviously)

worked out quite well I think as my signature pic shows, it just needs the details adding, however I will probably not detail too much as this layout will be scrapped as soon as the 'groundwork' up to detail level is done/learnt[:D].

Well Crandall, where do I go from here, hmmmm.... get this one finished, learn all I can from it, pull it apart and start a newer, improved, bigger (18x22), better one, hopefully by the summer.

CWClark, go with the roadrunner much superior, and at only $30ish per month all I can say is awesome.

Have fun & be safe.
Karl.
