You know answer with a smart-alec answer...

One I've recently re-holstered.

"I'll sell you my layout. I've put very little thought into it."

I've found that most people can handle a little humor. But every once in a while there is that one guy that was born without a humor gene. Just plain sad that you have to gear your comments to that one person.

One of the wonderful aspects of the WWW is the wide range of people you meet.

It's also one of the bad things.

The problem with humor is that everyone thinks they have a sense of humor. I've heard it said (can't remember right now where) that this can't be true, or everyone would be funny, and think that everyone else is funny. Or maybe it's true, but those senses of humor are as different as people's hair, noses, eyes, skin color, and so forth. Personally, I don't think that it's possible to be funny to all people at once. (In Stranger In a Strange Land, Valentine Michael Smith comes up with the idea that the funniest jokes always involve someone being hurt, that laughter comes from the need to DEAL with the hurt. However, that leaves the possibilty that ANY humor will ALWAYS be offensive to someone, meaning you can't safely use ANY humor ANYWHERE. Sounds kinda dull to me....)

Back when I was a professor, I always tried to put in something funny here or there. Not trying to disrupt the class, sometimes just to see if people were paying attention. Don't recall any student comments about having a bad sense of humor, so must not have offended too many people. [:D]

OTOH, sometimes my personal sense of humor is, shall we say, somewhat off-beat? I did have a couple of cases where a student came to me a day or so later, saying, "You were making a joke there, right?", or "I didn't catch the joke until later." Feh, so much for lightening things up. Somehow, physics and computer humor don't seem to translate well to the "general populace", whatever the heck that means. [:0]

What's my point? I understand your feelings, having felt them many times before myself. If you can look back on the humor without blushing, don't worry too much. If it helps any, try to think of them like this... http://www.livejournal.com/users/sandratayler/1860.html?thread=10564#t10564 (The artist is Howard Tayler, creator of the webtoon Schlock Mercenary. Now THERE's HUMOR! {IMHO, of course}). [:0][:D]

And, please, I apologize in advance if I'm offending anyone. Please address flames to me privately. [:X]

Chip,
Thanks for the email.

Yes, sometimes humor can be lost on a medium such as this. Sometimes it is better to just
forget it and go tell the wife a joke[:D] Good luck, Dave

Yeah,

My wife understands my humor. Andy you're right. She's also a twisted individual.

Chip, as my boss likes to say sometimes we are the bug, sometimes we are the windshield. Being online is like that. Many great folks, a few not so.

Always stay positive.

I can tell you that the one thing that makes life as a teacher bearable (at least at the Middle School level) is a sense of humor! What is unbearable is to be a teacher with a sense of humor working for a principle who has absolutley no sense of humor. Had that happen a few times in my 32 years teaching. cwclark, your teacher sounds like Superintendant material..... LOL NO FLAMES, I'm just being funny here!!! Life is much too short to take yourself seriously.

Yes I know what you mean. The owner of the company I work, a billionair at that, doesn't have any sense of humor. Everything goes over his head. But then, he's only 5' 2" tall.

Sometimes it seems nothing goes right, despite your best intentions, I feel for you. Last week I closed a major case, subjects arrested and processed and a sense of satisfaction at a sucessful conclusion of a difficuilt investigation. Trust my CO to Monday morning quarterback my decisions and actions.

Actually, I liked the Bill Maudlin cartoon with the two officers standing on a bluff watching the sunset and one has turned to the other to say "Spectacular view is there on for the enlisted men as well?

Take it with a grain of salt and laugh it off, Mouse! Life can be a tad strange on the net, and one mans humor can be anothers disdain. All of us can be a little warped at times. (I learned to live with that kind of stuff while I was in the service) For the most part, I ignored it, pressed on and tried not to lose any sleep over it.[^]
