I've got a variety of over 125 pieces of rolling stock, about 30 passenger cars and 16 engines in both steam and diesel. I'm very proud of - and humbly grateful for my little collection...

Enough to hold a 2 hour + operating session. Last count was 340, but I just can't stay away from ebay so it goes up by 10-15 a month.

again, your number ranges ar not sufficient to get a reasonable idea of the data. 697 freight cars, 60 passenger, plus some cabeese.

At least 125 in HO. Of every kind too. Mostly modern boxcars, hoppers, and intermodal cars, such as container cars , roadrailers(R), and an auto rack.
I also have several Amtrak passenger cars (All walthers), And 3 GO transit Bombardier cars.

684 and counting. My son can add another 193, so that's 877 so far between us. We are probably due for a sell off soon and would like to work this down to a more managable HO inventory.

I don't know what my son has in N Scale.

The last time I counted was about six or seven years ago, and I had just under 400. Could easily have twice that number by now.

Well with the engines I counted around 135 and they also have cabooses with the correct roadname.
The rolling stock I lost count around 600. Just because I keep on buying, buying, and buying. Thankful we have a full basement with my trainroom!!!!!!!! Now I just have to find away to run the Inlaws ( Outlaws) away at the holiday times, so I can expand into the Family room that we use for the eating............ HEHEHEHEHEHE (evil laugh) Kevin

I have a 14 car Empire Builder plus a few rex reefers. My freight is around 75 cars now although the most I have run in one train was 65 on a club layout. I also have 3 MOW cars plus a flanger and a rotary plow. Oh! I forgot about 6 or 7 cabeese!

According to the better half, more than the real BNSF (not true)

According to my father, I have more freight cars than God (also not true)

But just remember, the one who dies with the most rolling stock wins![:D]

From the poll options, I think you are rather clueless! If one has been in the hobby for any amount of time, the number of cars grows!
At one time I had over 300 freight cars that were custom painted/decaled/weathered. This was over 10-15 years ago and most of the cars were built off of basic Athearn/MDC bodies. I have 'flea marketed' most of those cars and built P2K, Intermountain, Red Caboose cars or kit-bashed 'correct' cars - I now have about 100 cars that are correct(about 3 years work). A lot of my freinds have 600-1000 cars in their collections and will never part with them.
The bottom line is that we vtend to build freight cars far beyond what out layouts have room for! My present layout holds about 60+ cars for 'operation' and gets 'clogged up' with more cars on the layout. Those 'excess' cars are in the display shelves or are stored for 'seasonal traffic' as needed.
The same goes for engines - I have far more 'correct' engines than are needed to 'operate' the layout - The 'excess' are displayed in the display shelves.....
The only 'shortage' I have is correct bay window cabooses(Milw Road), and that will resolve itself as I get more of those $250 brass cabooses!

WOW, and I thought 78 cars was a lot.

Larry almost 1,000 : Holy Moly Batman. Nice layout pics on your website. What size is your layout.

Perry, the winner so far, 8,000. Did you open a new hobby shop, or just keep the inventory. Do you have pics of your layout ?

Tom White, awesome story, your are always fun to read. Take care buddy.

Most of mine are inexpensive, but I like them. Billboard boxcars, with logos I remember of products, not trains. Starkist tuna, popsicle, chiquita bananas, champion spark plugs, tootsie roll,

still looking for a hersheys chocolate car.

Take care all

John--already have sugar-beet cars, but thanks for the information--completely forgot about that old coal operation near Livermore. As I remember, WP had a spur to the mine, way back then. Whew! I'm saved. Now I can go get those Accurail hoppers I was drooling about when my LHS put them on sale without any guilt at all!!

to twhite, Man, you got to convert those hoppers to sugar beet cars, quick, like maybe next winter? Only other choices are sand for glass plant or maybe wood chips? Enjoy! Actually, waaaayyy back there was coal mining north of Livermore! How about that?

There also used to be coal mines by Coalinga, CA. It got its name from Coaling Station A. Although I am pretty sure that there was no mining by WWII.

I have just started to take an inventory of my cars. Here is what I have so far (most of my fleet).
77 Boxcars
16 Mechanical Reefers, 2 Cryogenic Reefers
27 Covered Hoppers
8 Open top Hoppers
49 Tankcars
7 Gondolas
33 Flatcars (includes autocarriers, container cars, center-beams, etc.)
9 Cabooses
12 Cars assigned to MOW
13 Passenger cars
Most of my cars are Athearn, MDC, and Walthers. I also have some Athearn RTR, Athearn Genesis, LBF/E&C Car Shops, Eel River Models, Atlas, Accurail (once I model an ethanol plant that will increse), and A-Line.

I have been in model railroading almost 19 years now.

I bought a train/rmc store that was going out of business. I picked up over 8000 MDC and Athearn freight cars plus lots if IHC passenger cars. Now I will figure out what to keep, re-wheel, new couplers, and get rid of the rest at a swap meet, hopefully. I paid about $1.50 each way back when....

A little over 150 revenue freight cars. Covered hoppers that are used for 'unit grain trains', as well as box, tank. open hoppers, reefers etc. Plus quite a few centerbeam and bulkhead flats as my layout location represents a western regional bridge route with good number of customers who are part of the wood products industry, (or what's left of it).

Here's a formula for determining the number of freight cars one needs.

N is the number needed
X is the current number owned.

N=X+1

My latest count of refrigerator cars (iced only no mechanicals) exceeds 125

Good question. I don't actually know - most of them are currently in boxes under a desk in the attic. Will be going through them and working out what I have when the train room gets its long-awaited reorganisation (hopefully soon!).
