Sunday Photo Fun

Its that time again.

This is an old novelty noise maker type car, I believe was made by Tyco. I picked it up at the Sacramento GATS 2003 for just $3. T'was a BabyRuth 40' Hicube boxcar with a circular roller filled with tiny metal balls that made a rattle sound when the car moved. It works on the same principle as those $100 rail cleaner things. I figure I could drill holes and pour the balls out, wrap the roller with paper towel, douse on rubbing alcohol, and run that muther at the head end of a MOW train. It works pretty well. Collects lots of grime.

I'm making progress in Dante Yard. All track is laid and I've begun scenicing/ballasting some areas.

Excellent track cleaning idea! So simple, yet so imaginative. Now, why didn't I think of that? My I imitate you?

Hi,

Here's a picture of my first model. It is a Life Like cheapy.

I need to learn how to take better pictures of small stuff. Anyway here is a not so good picture of the new addition to the Hogwarts Freight and Ferry. All the details are washed out.

Aggro: That's a MAJOR track-cleaning car. Also am very impressed with the weathering on the Santa Fe reefer. You do GOOD work, friend.

Spacemouse: Aren't those little MDC cabeese the BEST? I've got three on my Rio Grande, they look just as good (and run better) than the Walther's Rio Grande prototypes. They're just cute!! Like that shack and the water-tank, too. Could use one near my cattle pens--think I'll hunt one up.

Yeah, I'm pretty much living on MDC rolling stock (and engines-just picked up another RTR 2-6-0 on eBay yesterday.) Every other pre-1900 is just junk or at least needs wheels and couplers.

You have to be excited about starting your new layout. I know I am.

I have to learn how to better use my digital camera on this small stuff. I think Lil Guy really looks great considering. He did a Humpty Dumpty a month or so back and broke of a couple rails and the front truck. The front truck was a recurring problem. Anyway, I drilled out the mounting hole and fixed (for good I hope) the front truck. I also re-glued all the hand rails. Details are molded into the body and it was a lot of fun painting them. You probably can't make out the brass bell on the front. Of course, he now has Kaydee couplers front and rear. No engine of mine is going to laze around on my layout.

Looking good and can still do 240 scale mph.

I just picked up an old 0-6-0 with an open motor. My plan is to try to drop the Hogwarts can engine into it, but if it can't I'm going to put it in Lil Guy. Who knows if Lil Guy gets a can...I just happen to have a decoder doing nothing.

Say, AggroJones, what are you using for bare, exposed earth? I have tried that fine ground colored sand from Hobby Lobby and I've tried Woodland Senics ground foam labeled "soil" (it looks WAY too black to me) and I'm not happy with the results. I'm in HO, by the way. I like the Woodland Senics fine and course turf for ground cover, weeks, etc. but thier "soil" is just too black. I like the looks of the exposed ground in your picture. What did you use?

Cheers,

Ed

Hey AggroJones, that weathering on the Santa Fe boxcar has to be amoung the best I've seen. The steamer in the background is pretty darn good too. Outstanding work!

I just took a Santa Fe pic myself - but a bit more in a modern area:

Okay, here's an older pic with some ATSF steam action:

So Butch, what about your layout? Any pics to show? We'd like to see them.

AggroJones-Treated dirt, cool! Specifically, how do you "treat' it. I'm guessing some time in an oven to make sure unwanted visitors don't hatch or sprout from it. Anything else? It is as convincing as anything I've ever seen. Model dirt with dirt! Obviously a great idea.

Cheers,

1. I gather dirt from various locations.
2. I pour water into it, making mud.
3. I remove large rocks, weeds, roots from said mud.
4. Let it dry out and grind it back to dust.
5. Run it through a sifter to remove oversized peices.
6. Put said dust in large zip lock bag with a few powerful magnets.
7. Shake the bag up. The magnets move through dirt, collecting metallic bits.
8. Remove magnets and clean off metal bits. Repeat step 7 over and over till no more metallic crap is gathering on magnet.
9. Take the non-magnetic dirt, put in a metal pan, bake it at 250 degrees for 1 1/2 hours to kill any bacteria or living crap.

Thats about it.

Aggro, that is the most amusing process description I have read yet for this hobby. That is making it on my wall and possibly my site if you don't mind.

I didn't do anything but planning this weekend, I did post stuff for sale on ebay. [:)]

Ever since I got that car, I've been attempting to locate others like it every show I go to. Still no dice. If the people selling them knew the potential, they'd probably just keep for themselves!
