Need article from Oct., 1968 Model Railroader
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, March 13, 2005 11:31 AM
I am interested in getting a copy of an article in the October, 1968 Model Railroader, about a "raiseaway" layout. They provide back issues from 1973 to present. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

I can do better than that. I happen to have TWO of the October 1968 issues. If you e-mail me your address, and if you are in the US, I'll send it to you. If you're outside of the US, I'd ask for you to pay for shipping.

send e-mail to rob (at) sandcrawlerworkshop (dot) com

This is copyright violation. I don't think the staff at MR would be too happy with you distributing their copyright material over the internet.

Yeaaahh.... I did it once a week or two ago with the trackplan from "101 trackplans". I thought once might slide, but if I do it often, someone's going to notice and put the smack-down on me :)

That's why I offered the original magazine.

Bob, I hope your comment wasn't directed at me...

MY point was I already was kind of blatant about it, figuring "easier to ask forgiveness than permission". But I don't want to make it a habit. I enjoy these forums, and if the "Powers That Be" (tm) decided to be offended, they could easily ban me from here. I enjoy it, and I don't want that to happen.

Technically, it doesn't matter if the material is out of print, or if photocopies aren't available any more - it's still not allowed. Just like you can't make CDs of your old LPs and sell them - even if the material is no longer available on CD or LP.

I don't want to get anybody's undies in a bunch, forum poster or Kalmbach.

As I've frequently posted in response to similar queries, if the NMRA's Kalmbach Memorial Library has a copy of the issue on their shelves they can usually make a photocopy of an article for a reasonable fee, complete with a rubber stamp notice regarding copyright:
http://www.nmra.org/library/
The fee is slightly more for non-members, but in any case, the turn around time is usually short. It's worth a try.

Actually, our customer sales and service staff will photocopy any article from MR or our other magazines for as far back as we have copies in our library, which in MR's case is back to the first issue in 1934, so while some issues are unavailable as back issues, no article is unavailable. There is a small fee charged per page.

Thanks for reading MR,
Terry

Thanks for the info, Terry! I knew I didn't want to step on anybody's toes.

I have received an e-mail from Mr. Foamer13, and I will be sending him my extra copy of the magazine as soon as I'm up and around again (flu... bleagh....)

"Foamer 13" said something which apparently led to some misunderstanding. You can obtain photocopies, color or b&w, of any article or prototype drawing from any issue of "Model Railroader" from 1934 – when it started – up to the most recent issue that's out of print. You can order the copies from the Shopping section of this Web site or by e-mail from customerservice@kalmbach.com.

Back issues in stock only go back as far as shown in the list on the shopping section of this site, and again they may be ordered either there or by e-mail as above. For earlier back issues, try RailPub, a dealer, at www.railpub.com.

So long,

Andy

Granted: I can't make CD's from my LP's and sell them; that's copyright infringement. But you say I can't copy one cut from an LP and GIVE it to my friend Joe Smith? I don't consider that infringement.
