Heh. Any steam that runs is a favorite. The old Strasburg 4-4-0 that is now in the PA Museum nearby used to run on the railroad until it was retired due to firebox issues was a favorite.

There is no way you can pick just one. There are many steam engines all worthy of consideration.

the 4-8-8-4 Bigboy.... they are mighty impressive in person... I have been in one and just the gigantic size of the firebox is enough to knock you off your feet. They are just so amazing because of the size and the power they once had.

Once you see one in person you will know what I am talking about.

Tie between the Missabe M-4 2-8-8-4 and the SP AC 4-8-8-2s.
3rd place goes to the UP Big Boy.

A few that come to mind that weren't on the list:

4-6-2 Pacifics
4-8-2 Mountains
2-8-4 Berkshires
0-6-0 and 0-8-0 switchers
4-12-2 UP 9000 series
2-6-6-2, 2-8-8-2, 2-6-6-4, 4-6-6-2 and 2-6-6-6 articulateds
4-8-4 Niagras

I didn't vote, because I like too many to choose just one.

Ah, we're back to our monthly steam locomotive poll, are we? Well, mine just keep pretty much the same--Missabe M3/4 2-8-8-4, SP AC-6 4-8-8-2, Rio Grande L-131 2-8-8-2, Rio Grande L-105 4-6-6-4, NP/GN/SP&S Z-series 4-6-6-4, Rio Grande M-78 4-8-2, Rio Grande F-81 2-10-2, Rio Grande ANYTHING that's standard-gauge steam. Throw in an Allegheny, Pennsy's 4-8-2's, and 2-10-4's, a C&O Mike, GN's S-1 4-8-4, let's see--aw Hell, if it steams, I pretty much like it!

I like the smaller steam 2-8-0's and ten wheelers specifically. They were the unsung workhorses that always seemed to be there untill the end.All work no play no big glory just dependable and hard working. Rob

Mikado, Berkshire, Mohawk, Niagara..

Your poll doesn't begin to touch on the possibilities.

4-6-0 ten wheeler, 4-4-2 Atlantic, 4-6-2 Pacific, 4-4-0 American are all favorites. I also like 2-8-0 Consolidations and 2-6-0 Moguls along with Shays and Forney's.
Enjoy

The C&O T-1 2-10-4, They lugged 160 car, 13,500 ton coal trains from the Ohio river straight through to Toledo, and they performed this service for more than 20 years, plus their drawbar HP equalled some of the articulated locomotives of the day, pretty impressive, I"d say.

I see the SP Cab-Forward is left off these steam polls once again! Is this the Rodney Dangerfield of steam locomotives? No Respect! No Respect I tell ya! [:D]
