Alvie, where in PA you goin' to?? We'll give you the grand rail tour.

Anyway, for projects:

1. Tear down HO scale Western Allegheny to make room into storage room. DONE

2. Build N scale Brady's Bend Central in a coffee table to tide me over until the new HO layout is built.. IN PROGRESS (AND WOW, "N" IS PRETTY NEAT!)

3. Build two new rooms on my house. ("Gee, since I'm adding a guest room, it wouldn't cost that much more to just add TWO rooms so I can have a room for my trains and workbench and....") IN PROGRESS

4. find SOMEWHERE to buy beg borrow steal or get plans for a PRR H10S Lines West tender. UNSUCCESSFUL TO DATE

5. Break down and buy a brass H10s, if I can find one. BUT WHERE?

6. Finish my book on the Western Allegheny. IN PROGRESS

7. Design a PRR-inspired paint scheme for the custom bike I'm building. DONE

8. Spend all my free time reading this forum. DONE

Ray out.

1) Finish 3 by 6 N scale RR, and have it ready for auction at local train show in November. Minimum bid will get my money back for a new project, and any profit will go to Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
2) After the auction, begin 9 by 11 around the walls HO layout.

1. Finish construction of my train room ( 3/4 done)
2. Build 1st HO layout after 55 year hiatus raising a family of 4, U.S. Army, College, working career, church, Little league, etc., etc.
If I get the tables all constructed, tracks layed out and working well for DCC, and some scenery completed, I will consider 2005 a success.

1. Cross off "some" of the items on the honey-do list, fini***hem this time.
2. Tear up existing lower level layout since I'll not be able to maintain the complicated track plan I have created.
3. Start planning new SIMPLE switching layout to fit my 10x15 room in N scale.
4. Continue scenery and detail work on the upper level around the room layout.
5. Thin out my N scale accumulation over the last 10+ years.
6. Have some fun in my retirement years.

As a suggestion, consider whether it would be possible to set up the 2x6 time saver in your bedroom using the following idea. Instead of using a 2x6 plank, make the layout from 1/4"plywood with a 2" layer of foam glued on top. This will be much lighter than any board, and will also be more dimensionally stable (no warping) than any plank (unless you add a lot of bracing). It would be stiff enough for a layout and could be supported on a pair of shelf brackets (the type that fit in the U shaped vertical standards that screw to the wall). When not in use the layout could be easily stood up against a wall, (assuming you don't try a lot of vertical scenery or tall buildings) and the shelf brackets removed. Very little impact, space-wise, to the bedroom. And it would allow you year round operation.

Another option would be a hollow core wood door. They come as narrow as 24", although they are normally a standard 6'- 8" long instead of the 6' you are planning on. But they can be cut down. Verry light and very stiff.

Something to consider. Good luck on your plan for 2005.

Future railroad projects for 2005 will involve the demolition of the current DV&W layout and to begin construction of its larger replacement.

The new layout will be 6x8 with a second level below for staging, reversing and programming tracks. This will be done using HO Kato Unitrack to make up for my mediocre track laying skills.

The new layout will also eliminate the 4% grade so my steam can haul more cars without having to work so hard. Also the minimum radius will go from 15" currently to 22" to enhance the operation of really big steam and passenger consists.

The current layout is now 2 years old, and I have learned a lot from it. Now I look forward to a whole new batch of mistakes to learn from!

Nope. Not a new USRA. Its an undec N&W Y3 from the last production I got from Trainworld on sale. Blowout minus 10% too. Can't beat that!

I actually plan on just modifying it to ressemble a Grande unit. I ain't going too deep on her. Changing a bit of the piping, mount the air pumps on the smoke box, paint the boiler green. Speed lettering on the tender. Mabey alter that cab some.

It won't stand up to inspection from a hardcore Rio Grande modeler. Just need a sweet running steamer with Rio Grande flavor to operate with my Rio Grande wooden caboose. [:D]

I plan on:
1. finishing the new room to house the addition to the layout
2. run some trains.....?
3. spend way to much money on new stuff that I can't live without
4. finish a whole lot of scenery and detailing (Yeh, right!)
5. run some trains
6. brag, I mean, complain about how much I spend on trains
7. visit Steamtown USA again
8. run some trains
9. daydream about how great my layout could be if I had more money to spend
10. Lastly, I want to run trains!!!!!!

When the weather breaks (read: done snowing for the season), I will open the trunk of my car. Therein I will find a bunch of wood. The wood goes into the garage where I will convert it into a set of shelves. On top of the shelves I will place my 2'x6' plank. I must get into my bedroom closet and bring out portable drawers full of track, RTR cars, &c. Set up Timesaver shelf layout. Enjoy being able to use my bedroom closet again. Decide if I need to buy another shelf kit (to finish emptying out closet). Learn how to electrically wire track. Wire track. Due to contingent nature of decisions, planning cannot continue further.

GOAL: Have trains up and running before next winter closes down the (unheated) garage again.

My list is simple, 3 in each category.

Trains:
DCCify my engines and my modules.
Complete my collection of every reefer PFE had in 1953. Or at least 30 of them.
Repair and paint my basketcase Balboa SP C-9

Life:
Buy the house that will house the layout
Find the wife that will tolerate the layout
Acquire the job that will pay for the layout

First of all Thank You Tim!
I needed that reminder or else I, the eternal procrastinator, shall never finish my layout.
1. WORK WORK WORK....then MOOCH MOOCH MOOCH I need $$$
2. Get the benchwork in for my 2nd section; the industrial complex...../.
3. Get DCC......I know, I know......
4. Make a GEVO (!) in N
5. Get to college
6. Make a website for my hobbies (model RR, military modelling, rocketry, astronomy)

Post-2005:
1. Get out of College
2. Dont go into debt
3. Keep the hobby alive by building layouts in annoying places all over my dorm
4. Get married
5. Have $$$ left over from my trains to afford a wedding.

For now however I will focus on at least getting the trackwork down for my layout so that I
can see full length trains run before I move out.....I pray that my mother will keep it safe

Cleaning off the layout top that my wife keeps putting stuff on and then complains to me that I never work on the railroad anymore. You can't even see the tracks.
Tear down the portion I no longer desire because of all the hidden trackage.
Build the new portion that will be out in the open with minimal hidden tracks.
Try to keep all the stuff my wife puts on the layout somewhere else. That's an all year job. Ain't it great!!

Update: the garage actually has a floor. [:D]

My future layout will be 14 x 8. The garage is cleaned out enough to be able to fini***he benchwork. Tomorrow the Christmas village comes down, except for the train station and my favorite church. Then after the benchwork is done, the temp layout come down.

I bought 2 of the 6 #6 switches I need. Once the benchwork is done, I have to see if they have 2" foam anywhere in San Diego, Home Depot, Lowes, Dixieline, non of them have it. I found 1 inch blue foam but I will have to wait and see.

But I don't think the wife has seen that much garage floor since I moved in. Woo Hoo, I am scoring points.

I will finally get off my butt and start building my layout and my oil refinery module, unless i end up moving back to Texas...then i'll have to say goodbye to having a large layout.

I will get my motive power roster filled out when i build a couple of Southern Pacific TEBU's and i stock up on some SD40T-2's, SD45T-2' , GP40-2's, GP38-2's, B23-7's, B30-7's, B36-7's and some odds and ends from railroads other than the SP/SSW/D&RGW.

I might never end up having a layout. but until i do, i am having too much fun building locomotives[:D]

On Tuesday, my new 12000-btu heat pump will be delivered. This will be the first step to getting my subdivision [a.k.a., a 2-car garage] climate-controlled. And once THAT's done...

1) Finish benchwork;
2) Lay sub-roadbed;
3) Lay/wire the track;
4) Install decoders in my favorite 12-15 locos;
5) Run some trains, identify track problems before applying any terrain

I can probably get these things done in 2005. Scenery? There'll be plenty of time in 2006 for that...!

Today I went to Home Depot and got the wood for the benchwork. The trains that haven't run for 30 years will have a home.

1: Put in the benchwork for north end of downtown on the layout.
2: Scratchbuild at least three skyscrapers for said downtown module.
3: Finally repaint some of the switchers.
4: Figure out where the freight switiching line will go on the layout (probably in the new module)
5: Repower some of the older Athearns
6: Replace the mainline track with concrete ties

Yea I'm hoping to get half of that done heh

Here's my list:
1. Add 3-4 structures to the layout.
2. Get the scenery up to scratch.
3. Purchase a BLI E6-7 in NYC lightning stripes.
4. Install a LocoBufferII and get DecoderPro up and running.
5. Build and install a 4-6 track staging area/yard.
6. Detail my SD40-2s.
7.Install automatic grade crossing controls so the crossing lights flash.
8.Replace the handful of low-end Lenz decoders with Digitrax or TCS.
9. Install at least 2 diesel engine sound decoders in F7s.
10. Install an under table, steam locomotive, first generation and second generation sound decoder system.
Almost forgot!
Give my website a facelift.!
A lot to do. I'll accomplish most of it if time and funding remain at current levels.
