Adding my two cents worth to dragonrigers thread gave me thoughts of going in a different direction with my layout.

I model Western Pacific and Southern Pacific in the 70 80 era. Now thinking of what if these roads still existed, what power would they use

Perhaps a shiney orange and silver Amtrack type locomotive pulling the Cal Zepher, Mac 80s. Never cared for the green and orange, even when I worked for WP. Just pondering, What do you think...John.

I model the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy as if it still existed … it is not unusual to see a steam powered passenger train pass a train with double stacks powered by a tunnel motor SD40T-2 on my layout.

After all, the hobby is about having fun, isn’t it?

I am modeling the Southern Railway anywhere from the mid 70s to the present. I plan on having double stacks and autoracks along with the trains of the 70s and 80s. I will eventually get around to one of my favorite NS locomotives, the SD70M with flared radiators, in Southern paint. That is a long way off though.

I guess my answer would be "kinda sorta." While my prototype and era floats around the mid 60's to mid 70's, PRR, LV and CNJ, I did purchase an Athearn AC4400 specifically to decorate in what I think CNJ's scheme would be today.

The MIlwaukee Road lives on in my train room. In my little (1:160) world, JamesJ Hill was ordered to divest himself of either the GN or the NP. So the GN merged the CB&Q, and the MIlwaukee bought out the NP. Hey, it's a hobby and it really could have happened.

What do you mean as "If" LIke that nasty rumor that Southern Pacific was taken down by UP. Blah!! nasty rumors! SP is a live and well!!!
Oh, and I also heard a rumor that the PRR has just purchased 14 SD70ACe's for freight service to help CSX out with their back log.

I model the CNW, Milwaukee Road, among many other roads,and I have a SD75m done in the CNW paint scheme. Though the biggest change on my layout, has been that the CNW has aquired the Union Pacific,hence ALL UP locomotives and freight cars on my layout, have had the lettering,and logos painted over and are in CNW lettering and logos[:-,][}:)]

This business of modeling a fallen flag as if it had never fallen is a very fun thing. I once considered modeling the CB&Q, NP and GN operating as a system witn no BN because the merger was denied by the ICC. That would put Big Sky Blue locos on the point of locals with a CB&Q caboose, etc. In fact, in 1975 I was waiting in the hallway on the top floor (12 floors up I think) of a building in St. Joseph, MO for an appointment and looked out a window to see the BN yard with just such a train. I believe it was reversed, though, with a CB&Q jeep and a GN caboose. That would be some interesting modeling.

I model a modern logging/connecting line, that is a subsidary of the GN. So, lots of GN influence all over.

Oh, and the merger of 1970 never took affect, nor was GN ever able to find any nasty Big Sky Blue paint!!! [(-D]

I will be modeling the MEC, CV, B&A, B&M, lines in New England both as they were and are now. I like steam, I grew up with steam until the late 50's, so I will change back and forth as I feel the desire. It is either that, or you set up two models, the old days, and the present.

I model the Rock as if it had never gone belly up. I came up with a totally new paint scheme but still use the big R. I have a SD90mac, a SD60 a Dash 9 an AC4400 and more. Most used to where yellow and gray but no longer. Muwhaaahaaahaaaa!!!![}:)][:D]. You can click on my link to see some of the repaints of the doomed railroad HA!!! . You can also see a couple UP patches HA HA!! There is also a Bigboy with the tender repainted for the Rock.

And, of course, its Eastern nemesis CCE (C&O+New York Central+Erie). Sorry for history's brutal dismemberment of the Pennsy, guys!

The Cincinnati, Georgetown & Portsmouth did not go banktrupt during the Depression thanks to schrewd bussiness moves (Overnight Parcel Delivery, containerized freight etc.) and the government not underwriting the auto industry by building roads. Of course they had to cut expenses, no flashy new locomotives for them.

I don't, because I'm in a time-warp with Rio Grande big steam in the 1940-50 era--but if I WERE modeling contemorary railroading, you betcha that Rio Grande would be alive and kicking! WRT to the original topic, I do have a custom painted B40-8 in New Haven colors... [:D] I, too, wanted to think about what my road, the New Haven, would look like today if they were still around.

So, I took what the NH was ordering at the end and what they didn't buy, and figured what I thought would be appropriate power. The NH, for example, never had a C-C diesel. Their last loco order was for U25B's from GE, and this was after they had tested both the U25B and the GP35 from EMD (they also bought ten C425's from Alco, but that was mostly because NH was an Also road). So, I guess-timated that the NH would continue to buy GE when their U25B's were ready for retirement in the early to mid-1980's being mostly familiar with GE from both the U25B's and their long association with Alco-GE products. Since they also would not be getting C-C diesels, that meant that the B40-8 was a pretty logical choice for a new engine.

For paint, I just used the same scheme that the NH used on the U25B's and C425's: all black, orange sill stripe, three white stripes along the middle of the hood and nose, with yellow handrails. What's really interesting is that I run my RPP B40-8 with my two Stewart U25B's and Atlas C425 and very few people notice that the lead engine is not real... [;)]

What? No New Haven!? [:p] Semi-more seriously, you know that the NH interchanged with all of your roads (except the MEC). Springfield, Worcester, State Line, New London, Willimantic, Lowell, Fitchburg, Framingham, South Station, Back Bay, Pittsfield, Westfield, Northampton, Agawam, Ashland, Clinton, Sudbury, Acton, etc., were all interchanges with the NH and either the B&A, CV, or B&M.

BTW, did you know that there were several real attempts to merge the NH with the B&M, MEC and B&A from time to time? It would have been called the "New England Railroad".
