Intermountain Reefer Kit Tips
Posted by icheezedyou on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 5:02 PM

Hi guys, I picked up 4 N scale CN intermountain reefer kits (similar to this) today

I'm planning on keeping the stock trucks until I pick up some more micro trains truck+couplers to match the rest of my rolling stock and weather them and the rest of the reefer at the same time

Other than that, it's my first kit rolling stock, so looking to avoid some pitfalls. Let me know

Welcome to the forums.

I have never done an N scale kit, probably never will, but some things are kind of universal.

I have done some Proto 2000 kits which I found challenging the grab irons and some other parts were very difficult to get into the pre-drilled holes.   The suggestion I got was to use reamers (they are tapered) to enlarge the holes slightly, for easier fitting.  Some folks suggest using a drill to enlarge the hole, but you are limited by drill size.  With N scale I would think that could make quite a difference.

Good luck,

Richard

While I've built many hundreds of HO kits, I've never built one in N Scale, although I have looked at a few.

The parts are very small, and obviously hard to hold on to.  I'd suggest wearing a shop apron when you are sitting at your work table, as that can be of considerable help in catching those flying parts.

I'm looking forward to hearing of your progress!
