WHY?

Why are you involved in model railroading? I do it for fun and for a challenge. What about you?

I do it because it prevents me from giving in to an obsessive desire to ask other people why they're involved in the hobby.

It's really kind of hard to support your local hobby shop when the nearest hobby shop that's worth the name is a 150 mile roundtrip.

I have often asked myself why I play with trains and I have only come up with one possible answer. Mom held me too much, or not enough

Keeps me out of bars, off the streets and out of trouble. The relaxation and fun it provides also benefits the health. The social situations that are possible thru MR is pretty good quality even if the occasional blowhard sounds off now and then.

Because it's the King of Hobbies.

Because you can enjoy the tech side of things or the artistic side of the hobby.

Because there is no end to the stuff you can buy and obsess over.

Because it requires as much or as little skill as you want to gain from being involved.

Because it's the great escape.

Hey, it's fun.

It's the only hobby I found for retirement that had so many different skill areas to work in and challenge your creativity at the same time. Think about it. Electrical, Woodwork, Electronic Control, landscaping, painting, research, design, and etc... all in one hobby.

And the Best Part: When your done with a project (if ever), you not only get to look and admire your creation...You get to play with too! [:D]

This hobby is great. It keeps me sober and out of the
local bar. My wife likes the fact that she knows where I
am 99% of the time. And my kids can learn several
new skills and have fun playing with dad.

Cheap therapy is a good answer. Keeping my hands and mind busy help me keep from brooding over the fact that I have not seen my son & daughter for three years. It'sa long story.

During the summer I can garden but rediscovering trains last December at Cincinati Gas & Electric's annual Christmas exhibit was great. Right now I am waiting for the basement to be finished. (a few more weeks) then I can start on my first layout in 30 years and keep my hands busy.

In addition to the engineering, art, and craft side of the hobby, most MRs seem to like good wholesome fun, fellowship, and friendship -- like me! There seems to be a broad and diverse group in MRing and most people put petty judgments aside so that everyone can share modeling information, techniques, tips, and conversation -- enjoying this really great hobby. Just my opinion! [:)] It’s late – I have to get some sleep… church in the morning – you know! (Try saying that in some groups and see what happens). [:D]

[i]I Really, Really, Really, enjoy this hobby!!![/i [8D]

Why do I choose model railroading as my hobby of choice? Well let's see...

1) It is in my blood, from where it came from I don't know. I am the only true train nut in my family.

2)Trains are the coolest things on Earth

3)This hobby is relaxing, fun, and challenging all in one convenient package

4)ANYTHING GOES!

5)The education

Trains rule, there will never be a replacement for them, and they will never be forgotten. Whoever thinks trains are pointless, and model railroading is a waste of time, doesn't know much about history. Through model railroading we learn so much about the expansion of America, and the growth of technology. And it all sticks because we learn it in a FUN way.

My great grandfather worked for the L&N, my grandfather owned a timber company that used three L&N yards in central Louisiana, and he had an HO layout in the 50's and 60's, my dad and I had an HO layout in the 70's, I've been collecing HO gear ever since then, and now I am finally at a point where I can start builting a new HO layout.

I eat, sleep, and drink model railroading.

1. Wandering thru a hobby shop beats killing time at a mall.

2. Assembling kits beats watching the umteenth tv reruns, even with cable.

3. As a child, I used totake things apart to see how they worked. As I got older, I learned to put them back together, again. This hobby satisfies my urge to build without imposing deadlines on completion or forcing yourself you to continue when you are tired.
