A couple of thing that can help with tiny fonts. You can make the text bigger on the screen by using a lower resolution, i.e. 800x600 instead of 1024x768. You can also get a larger monitor size and for the same resolution have the text appear larger. You can also do both. I use a 19" lcd monitor which is equivalent to a 20" crt monitor.
Enjoy

Or, in IE, go to Tools->Internet Options, click "Accessibility," and check the box next to "Ignore font sizes specified on web pages." Then you can use View->Text Size->Larger/Largest to increase the font size.

Better yet, download Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org) The View->Text Size->Increase/Decrease works without having to change anything, and you can increase or decrease the size as much as you need (without being restricted by the pre-set "largest" size, for example).

Seems somebody always gets defensive and bent out of shape whenever someone else makes some suggestions to make the forum a little bit better.

If you'll read the original post, Chris uses the term "idea". These are not mandates, just good, common sense suggestions for improving the dissemination of our ideas on the forum. This has nothing...I repeat, NOTHING (capitalized for emphasis) to do with someone's education or the lack thereof.

We use rules, guidelines, and etiquette in our lives each and everyday: When we pick up the phone, when we're driving our cars. No one is going to give you a ticket for misspelling a word. Again, if you read the original post, Chris mentions nothing about spelling, just that you "please try to type all words out as it is a lot easier to others". It's merely a suggestion to "try".

So...put down your weapons and strive to be a little bit better at everything you do.

One of the things I love about this forum is that there are so many ways to do things and all of us together can share what we know and learn from others. Even though I use Mozilla I had never come across that feature.
Enjoy

Well we've made agood sized mountain out of this molehill. Did we use plaster over screen wire or hard shell? If you don't like a "SUBJECT" then don't bother to open it up. No one is holding a gun to your head to make you read anything.

I don't read replys that have a lot of bad grammer or misspelling, but if you like to, then get with it.

If I can read a post and help someone out then I will, but I'm not going to answer all of them - not enough time in the day.

I'm in this forum for FUN.

I agree. Too many people on this forum have HORRIBLE spelling and grammer issues. Sorry, but it's true. If you don't know how to spell a word, would it kill you to look it up!?

Also, what really bugs me is that some people come on hear and type like they're on AOL Instant Messenger. For example: "hey do u guyz no any thng abut trainz????? u dnt??? lolololol lmalmao!!!!!!11"

I'll admit, I type like that once in a while, but never on here. On a public forum such as this, you should atleast TRY to type (and spell) normally.

Wow, a lot of you appear to think your coming across like your defending someones right to misspell or have poor grammar, when everyone knows they have this right! In reality, what your doing is telling us we don't have the right to make comment. We've got to "Get over it"! We're being wined at about being "little girls" by someone who doesn't realize what he is doing is winning!

Look fellahs and ladies, I'll get over it when I chose to get over it and then I'll quite wining about it!

I really don't get how this topic can cause such derision amongst the ranks! What is wrong with wanting to do better and espousing the position we ALL try harder? I have yet to see someone singled out and persicuted on this forum for their spelling or grammar! IT JUST DON"T HAPPEN!!!!

Actually, Lupo, I think he was banned as Parkerlegend and came back under his new user name "Biggie Smalls". I don't think you'll see any new post from the name Parkerledgend.

You're right Aggro.

Not to many people in Norwich Conn. named BIG AL and work as firefighters.

You have to give him credit as his language hasn't gone to the gutter yet.

Guys??? This is getting way outta hand and way too personal. Al, I want to encourage your to leave the firefighting at work; not on the forum. [:)] The book of Proverbs says, "A gentle answer turns away wrath..."

We are all losing the whole point here. READ THE ORIGINAL POST AGAIN! Chris's points are suggestions for making improvements to the forum. The only reference to spelling is in the last point, and it's in terms of "trying" to spell out the word so that it is easier for everyone to read. We are harping on one small aspect of the original post and making it say what it never intended to say. I'll repeat it again: READ THE ORIGINAL POST!

We're all going to make mistakes typing out our thoughts. It is inevitable. Let's stop the staunch "My rights" speeches and let's ALL strive to be better communicators, so that we can - here's the operative word - help one another enjoy the hobby that we all seem to be passionate about. (And, please, no suggestions about singing "Kumbaya". Thanks!)

Tom, I think the original intent of the thread IS being discussed here and the thread hasn't "gone off the track". However, threads evolve over time and new points certainly can be considered as a part of the whole, if this is the desire of the the new poster! The bad side is, people whom come into the middle part, may tend to equate and credit the whole content of the thread to the original poster. This is putting words in the original poster's mouth, which he/she can be called on the carpet for.

I don't see the intent of any of this thread to be a finger pointing at anyone. I don't see it as a bunch of "gossiping itches" either. I see it as good suggestions and simple manners. I want to get my point across and appear intelligent, educated and mature in the process. That's what I see the original post espousing.

Wow! What a heated discussion this is.

As a relatively new forum member and new model railroader, I would like to say the the original post made some good points. I feel that spelling is important only in the fact that your message be understood. This is what everyone that visits here wants, to understand and be understood. We all want to help each other and it makes it easier if the poster's message is clear.

We must remember that we are all of different abilities, skill levels, knowledge and education. Some of the veteran members are wonderful and very generous in answering what may seem the most simple and basic questions. Others, I am sure get bored with the repeated questions about brass track, layout size, what scale to model, etc. I tried a search when I first joined. It was difficult, because the title headings did not always match what I really wanted to know. There is also so much information to sift though. Sometimes it is just easier to post you question and wait for the responses.

For the veterans, thank you for your wealth of information and your patience.

For the newbees, remember that you are communicating with people of all ages. Some of the older members have no clue about text messaging and the abbreviations. Me included and I am only 37. If you want good responses, just make your message clear. I am sure that the more detail that you can provide would be most advantageous to those of us trying to help you.

It did not take me long to figure out what LHS was, but i still do not know what LOL is.

As in real life (i.e. outside this forum [:)] ) I skip the topics I'm not interested in. If someone posts in all caps (which I personally find hard to read) I skip it. If someone's grammer is too atrocious or they have abbreviated too much (I'm not talking about the occaisonal misspelling [:)] - I do that myself [:D] ) then again I just skip over it. Life's too short and there too many trains to build. Remember, we're supposed to be having fun [8D][8D]

Enjoy

This whole post should be taken off of the forum. Who cares if there are missed spelled words. Who cares if their are overly used exclamation points. Who cares who you are or use to be. I love, I repeat love trains. I have grown up watching movies about Union Pacific and Southern Pacific steam engines, especially UP 3985. I have trains all over my house, including a Lionel set that started out around the Xmas tree and is now completely around my living room. I logged into this forum to get more help and to learn more about model trains and problems. I did not sign up to get lectured by a bunch of up tight people on how to post on this site or to gossip about other members. None of my former Engli***eachers are grading my posts. Also, gossiping is pointless and a waist of energy. Lets get back to trains!

We are living in a non perfect world ladies and gentlemen. Some of us are not typist, like me, I use the H&P ( hunt and peck ) method, and my large fingers hit adjacent keys sometimes. Does this make me a bad speller? No, it does not. And the font on these threads is very small for older eyes, don't knock it people, you are "all" coming to it one day, trust me. Can I make it larger? Sure I can, all I have to do on this 19" LCD screen is to change the resolution to something lower, but that defeats the purpose of having a high resolution screen and video card too.
And, some people are dislexic (sp), are we going to knock these people too? Let he/she who is "without fault" cast the first stone!!! Be a little more thoughful people, think of others for a change, you might really start to see how good you will feel about yourself.
Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!
