Had to take my oldest to a couple of doctor appointments out of town yesterday. The whole family went and we played tourist in between the appointments. Made for a nice day in spite of the doctors.
Bear, sorry to hear about the club. That is unfortunate. Seems to be a going thing in that people just won't volunteer to help out much anymore. Our small town here had two big events semi-officially end this year as they couldn't get volunteers to help with them. It would seem those that stand to benefit the most from them (and the benefit from one for sure was not inconsequential) would pitch in to help make sure they happen, but no.
Hoping Brent is doing okay. Miss his posts. Anyone hear from JR? I know after his move he had some things to accomplish before being able to start on a new layout, but sure would like to have him check in. I know there are others that are AWOL, but my coffee hasn't kicked in yet. If you know you haven't posted in a while, chime in to let us know you are okay if nothing else.

If the clubs are like this forum, and the majority of the people show up to socialize instead of focusing on the club's purpose, the clubs will die out.
Add in a few examples of the type of thankfully former users of this forum, and the people who want to put real effort into building and operating a model railroad are driven away.
David I hope Dawn is feeling better. Your book reminded me of the news. North Korea launched a missle from a train. I would have thought that would have been destructive to the train and track.
My experience with everything is 80% or the work is done by 20% of the people.
Our beagle Bella is at the vet's getting a ECG. Even when it's not hot, she is getting very short of breath on her walks. She is only 5 yo.
Everyone's tomatoes are coming in extremely late this year. I planted a German yellow variety. The fruit are very large and splitting at the top. We are tired of squash and are giving that away.
It's actually chilly down the basement and I haven't looked at the trains in a couple weeks.

BigDaddyEveryone's tomatoes are coming in extremely late this year.
This year all the landscaping is recovering from the hurricane last year. My Crape Myrtels bloomed early, and have been blooming like crazy ever since. My Frangiapani has more blooms than normal, but they are smaller. The Indian Hawthorn and Royal Poinciana have not bloomed at all this year.

Today is our 37th anniversary; we were supposed to take a quick trip to the mountains of New Mexico. However, my Dad is moving this weekend from his apartment in Wichita Falls to a room with my sister in her new home. Sister moved to Lubbock a month ago to be near her kids/grandkids. We spent last weekend packing. It is going to be a mess. In the last three years he has gone from a 2,500 s/f house on 3 acres to a two bedroom apartment to a bedroom. Lots and lots of stuff to give away. The lack of planning and organization is killing my wife. And he is missing Mom.

In the years after my father passed away, his wife went from a giant house outside of Del Rio, Texas, to their Summer home in Fort Madison, Iowa, to a small manufactured home in Bonita Springs, Florida, to a room in my house, and now into assisted living in Iowa.
There was so much stuff to dispose of, and it all fell on me (mostly my wife), and we were not even related to her. Her children did nothing except fight over what had value.
I feel for your situation.

That's too bad about your club, Bear. Unfortunately, I think it's a sign of the times, and not just for model rr clubs. Town service clubs, volunteer organizations, and church service groups all seem to have the same problem. I think people seem to be so busy today that clubs and organizations suffer because no one feels they want to take more time.

I hear that a lot. Some kids are too busy to take care of the parent, but sure find the time to stand in line with their hand out when the inheritance comes along. Terrible.
That's too bad. I know the feeling. With both my parents and the in-laws, we ended up giving away tons of stuff. Good luck. Once it's finished, you will be able to relax. Happy anniversary anyway!
I'm spending a little time on the layout today. This is the first actual rr work I've done in a long while. Maybe because it's just so hot and humid outside, I can stay cool in the layout room!

When I started this remodel, in February of 2017, the goal was to have the train room done by January, 2022. I thought five years for the whole project was plenty of time.
It would have been, if not for how I keep deciding to upgrade everything along the way. All the delays are my own doing.
I won't bother anyone with the details of what I had to do to get a surround system into the tray ceiling indent of the master bedroom, but that added a few weeks right there.
With everything that is done, I am very glad I upgraded everything and went all-in. I would be disappointed with compromises.
But, the delays are so frustrating.
We are having a tremendous rain/thunder/wind storm outside right now.
This is incredible to watch out the rear window.
Tin Can Lubbock is a neat little town, but you have to imagine the weather forecast might be for Blowing Mud one day! University Town, go to Abuelo's and have a margarita for me or River Smith's for some fried catfish.

Well, the house next door to mine finally sold. I do not know if they got the $290,000.00 they were asking for it.
They took the For Sale sign down today, and workers are there making it look better. I think a flip is taking place.
Hopefully it gets sold, and then it will no longer be a rental property.

I was inspired last night by a combination of the recent "Impulse buying" thread and a sale at a popular online train store. Ordered a locomotive that I have loved forever and a day, but belonged to my preferred prototype's chief rival. No it won't fit my layout, but a shiny new Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1 should be on my doorstep relatively soon! I can't wait. I had no plans at adding another engine anytime soon as I just added an SD-7 and an Erie Built A-B pair, but the combination of the deal and my love of the GG-1 was too much to resist! So what if it will pull New York Central lettered trains through my version of the decidedly not electrified Adirondacks. I don't care. Hey, Model Railroading is fun!

Been there and all that with my favourite locomotives. The fact 'it's my railway' doesn't cut with some 'purists'.
I love Class 52 locomotives. The purist often say they never went beyond Birmingham, never mind Leeds. When I say I have it in writing and in picture form that the 52s did get to Leeds, they still deny such a thing happened.
Another one the purists argue here is Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway locomotives never travelled North Eastern Railway metals. Yet during Summertime the L&Y ran to Scarborough: deep in NER territory.
What fun seeing a rival company train bringing a little variety to the operations.

I received a package yesterday of my goodies from that popular online train store. I certainly didn't need 12 sheets of building signs, but at $2.00 per sheet... why not?
I also got all the A-Line diapragms for my MDC Harriman cars for $3.00 each!

I have all modern trains on the layout. Except ... among the 2020 locomotives, cars, and buildings, runs a 1950's Union Pacific "City of Los Angeles". It is a train I rode as a kid in the 1950s, and I love having it run on the layout.

Just to add: I love doing research. (Research into various things.)
One time I was researching what trains arrived and departed Leeds Central. Apart from the obvious local ones to towns around Leeds, I was reminded of the many express trains starting or finishing or passing through. (Thames - Clyde, Thames - Forth, North Briton to name three.) Then there were a few I never knew that did. All gave rise to running the large fleet of locomotives I own.
More research I found about the 'Club Cars' from Blackpool to Manchester. Business people in Blackpool travelling to Manchester paid an annual premium for a seat in a special carriage. That seat was theirs, so when they boarded the train there was no 'looking for a seat'. That was the only service the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway offered it on. What fun to have such a service on Wetherby to Leeds. Ficticious maybe, another train to run and fun to operate.
All done through research and adding extra train running.

I don't think it really matters what we run on our railroads. Sure, a SD70MAC will sure look out of place behind a cab forward, but wait, 4014 has a modern diesel behind it, so the sky's pretty much the limit. On one hand it's good to have something prototypical for roads, geography, structures, etc, but isnt it equally rewarding if our modeling is simply plausible. I'm a UP/SP guy, but I also love the GN Empire Builder scheme, and will plan on some GN diesels with the rest of the livery even though they never ran together in Kansas. And as far as that goes, I might plan a citrus growers exchange next to a flour mill. It's all plausible. Well, I'd probably have a citrus exchange on another part of a layout, but you all get the idea. Sometimes I think large scale MRRs have a good idea, they enjoy running trains and aren't too concerned about being prototypical.

You can see I really don't like the BLI GG1s much (I also model New York Central, sort of) Hey! There IS a GG1 in Elkhart right along the NYC main line.

I can't wait for the GG-1 to get here. I'm so excited. I love steam locomotives and F units, but that GG-1 is special. Ed, I love the lineup photo you posted. It might be time for me to start indulging in a few trains that don't fit my layout scheme. The only non-New York Central locomotive I've had on the layout is a Boston & Maine RS-3, but I justified that with a trackage rights agreement in the backstory of my layout. This will be the first "just for fun" one. There really aren't that many just for fun engines I really want, so why not?
Yesterday went well. Had a nice day with my kiddo. The highlight (for me anyway) was taking a walk on the beach and seeing a bald eagle sitting in a tree keeping an eye on things. Very cool. Tomorrow, my mom and stepdad should be up for a visit, air quality permitting. Mom is on oxygen and can't be out when there is basically anything in the air. Forecast looks good though.

The NYC leased plenty of B&M locomotives over the years. I remember seeing them in Collinwood along with some Bangor & Aroostok Geeps plus some Great Northern locos. No need to feel like you have to stretch a fantasy story.

When I was a kid, a neighbor had a basement empire and he had a GG-1 with cantenary. Cantenary looks cool but I can't see myself doing it.
