Amazon delivery hubs/lockers
Posted by dbduck on Friday, May 5, 2023 2:33 PM

Recently, I purchased an item from Amazon ( airbrush) And was having it shipped next day free because of my Amazon prime account. I knew that I would not be home the next day, but did notice that I had the option of having it delivered to an Amazon pick up hub near me. There were at least five options within a 5 mile radius of my house. With porch piracy being what it is in my area I thought what the heck I'll give it a try, and chose a grocery store about 2 miles away

The next day I get a notice that my item had been delivered, I go to the store, they have an Area that basically looks like a wall of various size school lockers. I put my phone with my delivery barcode in front of the reader.

presto! One of the doors pops open and there's my package.

I definitely plan on using this option again in the future

I am just curious if anyone else has used this delivery option

We both work for the one of the auto companies. Before covid hit, we used the lockers or if it was too big, a drug store chain had a pickup point. I liked it because we did not have to worry about thieves, the weather or a signature.

Since covid, we have been doing the same work but from home so that’s not a problem.

Its definitely a good service.

I'm glad I moved out of city life when I retired over 20 years ago. Porch piracy does not seem to be a problem in our rural area. In my case, my porch is almost 300 feet from a lightly traveled gravel road and my driveway is S-shaped so anyone looking from the road isn't going to be able to see what's on my porch. I suppose someone could follow the Amazon truck to see where a delivery is made but that seems like it would be time consuming for a potential thief, especially not knowing what is being delivered. I sometimes order items for less than $10. So far, porch piracy hasn't been an issue at my house. If I had to drive to the nearest Amazon locker site, it would defeat the advantage of home delivery.

PS. Your Amazon Prime delivery isn't free. You just pay a flat rate for deliveries for an entire year. If you order a lot of items from Amazon like I do, it more than pays for itself, especially when I consider what it would cost me for the 24 mile roundtrip to the nearest brick and mortar store, but I don't consider it free delivery.

If a porch pirate didn't know how to lift properly he'd wrench his back and end up with big bags of cat litter at our place.

I have never been a victim od Porch Piracy (theft), but in my neighborhood there are always people outside and dozens of conspicuous security cameras. I think that has a lot to do with it.

We have pick-up lockers at Home Depot, and customers love them even though it only saves them a few steps.

We've used lockers for different items. They are great if near or at a place you do grocery shopping or elsewhere yuu visit ofen.

Lockers are great, but haven't porch pirates.  They are more common during the holidays.

The local drug store chain down the street has the lockers in the back of the store near the phamacy so it is very secure. We haven't used it yet because there is almost always someone home even though many of the delivery services don't bother to ring the doorbell and the stuff sits outside all day.

I don't know about Amazon but UPS will deliver stuff to me at work if I tell them that I won't be home. Or I can go to UPS and pick it up there. I have done both before.
