RAPIDO 40' Fruehauf exterior post van (trailer)

Anybody get any of them yet? What are your thoughts?

The 'RAPIDO TIRE SUPER HI-MILER' tires look very nice along with the air tanks and brake rigging. Paint looks sharp. I like the side door and the rear door latching rods and handles.

I picked up one in PennCentral's green paint.

I picked up seven of the beauties. I like that the hold-down chains are included although I haven't tried to apply them just yet. On a few of mine the thin metal signage was slightly dislodged but it was a quick and easy fix.

I'll add photos as soon as I get them developed.

Cheers, Ed

What hold-down chainsHuh?. My little plastic bag only had a king pin plate and extra set of 'up' dollie wheels in it. I was very carerful when getting the clam shell protection out of the box. I am wise to these guys and their extra included tiny parts.

Maybe the hold-down chains are era and RR specific. My PC trailer is the late style nose. I need to check out the early-style nose, they may have the HDC's.

Oh, and be very careful with the trailers factory attached dolly wheels or they won't be attached for long.

He'll add photos as soon as he gets them developed...must be using a Brownie box camaraBig Smile.

My Polaroid Land camera is in the shop!

I only broke one of the dolly wheels that was just a little crooked and when I tried to straighten it... snap-crackle pop! It glued right back in place, though.

I put the hold down chains on a pair of my Pennsy trailers but I didn't have the camera focused properly. I'll have to put another roll of Kodachrome in the ol' Brownie...

Maybe the 40 footer didn't include the chains. All my 35 footers did and there's a tiny hole ahead of the landing gear and behind the wheels to attach them to.

This photo is a little soft on the focus but it shows the chains I applied:

One other thing I did was to carefully pry the floor off and add just a smidgen of weight, about ¼ oz. just to give them a little 'heft'. The floor comes off easily.

Isn’t the landing gear supposed to be in the up position after the trailer is loaded, or is it up and the photos don’t show it?

I just pulled the models out of the box for a quick pose for a photo. I don't want to have to mess with the landing gear any more than I have to. Probably up if a retractable hitch is installed, down if the trailer is simply strapped down with additional nose support as in this example:

I haven't decided yet which cars are going to get what trailers. I'll apply the proper gear retracted or extended as needed. Until then I'll be posing the trailers in various areas of the layout until I come up with a scheme.

I will add that you will want to keep an eye on the dollie wheels, they will go AWOL at the first chance they get. I reglued one dollie wheel stub back on with Tamiya glue, twice, it did not stick. I'm not sure if the factory glue is something like Walthers Goo-Glue, somewhat flexible because you may want to remove the factory installed down wheels for the extra in the bag up wheels. Anyhow I now used CA glue and it seems solid. Since I may get a few more trailers it will not matter if these wheels are up or down on this trailer at this time.

Just tonight I carried the trailer from the layout to the work bench (6') and when I got back to the layout the other dollie wheel that was not repaired was missing.

I have not found it yet.

Now I just need to figure out which trailers I want to have wheels up or wheels down before I CA the wheel's stubs in place.

Well, April Fool's day must be a good day for Murphy, too. Tonight I was installing this Rapido Cullen-Hayes flasher onto a C&NW FP7. Shortly after taking the photo (in the laundry room) I carried the shell back to the bench and... yep, the amber colored bubble is missing. Tomorrow I'll get out my trusty mini-vac and try scouring the floor. I have rust colored carpet in the workroom Bang Head that sure helps in finding an orange part!

I rarely use superglue these days. For detail parts and such I rely on canopy cement, PVA or mostly Faller Expert Laser glue. Sometimes you have to let it sit a bit to get tacky but it adheres very well and mistakes can be cleaned up with water before it sets.

In fact I just realized I'm going to have to pry that aluminum flasher frame back off the FP7 roof because I forgot about a light-blocking disk that has to go on underneath. No problem, the PVA glue stays soft and tacky so the three pins will pull right out and cleaning the old glue off will be simple.

Good luck, Ed
