If I had one on my layout I'd call it Burglar Kink.

Thanks. I did see the work in this March MR. I was liking the UP trains also since I have those. His street was truly cool looking. I knew that his layout looked familiar because it was in on of the other MR magazines this past year. Thats where I first saw it and now they did a future on the front page of his. I hope one day my layout makes it that far but if not aww well. I really like the KFC but I could not find any kits similar to that to do.

Check out March MRR. That guy Pelle Soeborg did an excellent job with a Denny's, KFC and Best Western (no pic of his McDonalds). Perhaps Pelle and Biggie should get together and do an article(s) on scratchbuilding some of these models. I'm sure it would be popular. It never ceases to amaze me the talent that many in this hobby have!

Need some balloons, searchlights, and a guy in a king costume. Not bad.

I might go for a 65 style Taco Bell before the drive up, or a In-N-Out next to the tracks.

Right at the corner of Imperial Blvd. next to the UP tracks in South Gate lays a burger stand with Pastrami Hamburgers Fries Chiliburgers. A bit further down in a take out Pizza Hut in a strip mall shop like a domionos

Biggie:

With a handle like that, you should be building a Wendy's (as in Biggie Fries, Biggie Drinks, etc), not a BK LOL

FYI, according to Spikre over on the Atlas forums (HO), Lifelike didn't have a licensing issue with McDonalds, like we've all commonly believed (me included). Rather, they had a limited time frame that they were allowed to produce the kit because McD's was just starting a pu***o change the styles of their restaurant. To quote Spikre, here's what he said in a response to a post by me (Greg), though I don't lnow what he meant by "ALSO":

"Greg,
get the facts on the McDonalds kit
CORRECT ALSO!!!
Life like had X amount of time to run
with the kit.they were slow getting it out
and McRonald would NOT EXTEND thier time!!!
that is from Mr Sol Kramer of Kramer
vs Kramer-NOT,of LIFE LIKE!!!
have also talked to Col Carstens about
this and got about the SAME INFO!!!!
McDonalds was into thier big pu***o
convert to sit in resturants,which
explains the TIME LIMIT!!!
the kit was always DESIGNED to be
converted to other configerations!!!
give Col Hal a call,or E mail!!! "

As you can see, Spikre has a different style of writing than most anyone else. Some love it, some hate it. I get a real laugh out of how he says what he says, but it did take some getting used too. He's also known to be really reliable with his info.

Enjoy the Hobby!

Biggie,

Here's a thought. Get one of those picture frames with the digital sound recorder in it (sometimes they can be found for less than $5.00 at those Dollar type stores). Install a push button. When ever visitors walk buy you can pu***he button and they'll hear "You want fries with that?" LOL

Student,

Thanks for the info . . . bummer about the availability. Hopefully someone will get the license and redo an early McDonalds. That would really set the era for a layout.

Wouldn't it be great if someone came out with a 60-70's era McDonalds? You know the small stores with the arches across the sides? That would be way cool and I bet a hot seller.

In the late 70's or Early 80's Life-Like (When ever they were selling their "Buildems" Line of structures sported an early style Mc Donalds. However Life-Like did not procure licencing for such a model and thus Mc. Ds sued. From what I know of the case Mc D. issiued all kits recalled and the tooling destroyed. Every once in a while one of these kits surfaces on Ebay and the lowest I have seen it sell for is $150.00.

Back in 1998, there was a company that made Ceramic buildings (Along the lines of Dept. 56 and Dickens buildings) Came out with a series of ceramic buildings in their "Route 66" Series. I know an early Mc.Donald's was offered. These buildings were scaled to 1/8" = 1' so are a little small for HO scale. But could work along the back of an HO scale seen in a Forced Perspective fashion. My imperfect memory tells me (I saw this one afternoon watching QVC when I was down with the flue) that the line also included a Santa Fe Mission Style train station. (Included a length of HO EZ track) a Gas Station, and a Motel. If anyone can fill me in on who this company is, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you look at the bottom picture in my first post in this topic you can see that there is a sign for the Burger King. Not the bottom picture in this post. LOOK UP. LOL It is just the way the picture is that you cannot see it. I may make another one that is lite too. Here is a before picture of the area.

That's a good job of scratchbuilding! It seems that the style of building built for Burger King varies according to what part of the country you're in. There seems to be even different designs according to the locale within a state, because out here in Arizona all BKs are not the same design.

Good job Biggie Smalls, I can smell the onion rings. Just for oldtimes sake, I'll take a double whopper with cheese, rings, and a chocolate shake.

I like FundyNorthern idea of a big sign, but you probably have to scratch build if it didn't come with the model.

Take care
