Atlas O Scale F9s from the 70s
Posted by ManishKarnik on Monday, December 26, 2022 4:25 AM

Hello All,

My first post here. I have purchased an Atlas O Scale train set and a couple of the Atlas O Scale F9s. Have also ordered a couple of the older Atlas points and some 24in radius curved track.

All the stuff is old and pre-owned but its what I can spend on. One of the locos is giving some trouble. It will be a while before I get them here in India and one of the locos does not run smoothly. I intend to use these lightly but I am wondering if any DIY upgrades to the mechanism is possible.

Welcome to the forum.

This forum is largely HO and N scale.  You might join the Garden Railways Forum and post your question there.

My recollection is that AtlasO from the 1970s was all 2 rail track.

Hi there and welcome to the forum.  I believe NWSL sells a gear set for these:

https://nwsl.com/collections/geared-wheelsets/products/geared-wheelset-p-48-40-115-1-8-x-1-333-shouldered-axle-roco-atlas-f9-red-caboose-gp9-upgrade-geared-wheelsets-4

My advice would be to give them a call to make sure that's the right set.

I would also make sure that the gearing is actually broken before ordering. When you receive the loco (my understanding is that it's still in the mail), you might want to open the loco and see what is going on. The motor shafts will probably need lubrication, as well as the gears.

Good luck!

Simon
