Good Morning,

Great to hear from you Ken!  How are the trains running? Is your move soon? A bag of dog treats for Dirk. I've missed hearing about him.

Yesterday the prediction was for an inch of snow at the most. We got about 5. Today is clear and cold. The block heater in the car is plugged in as I'm going on a grocery pickup later.

Keep warm,

CN Charlie

Good Morning Diners.  Chloe, a large coffee in a Polar Express mug please.  Can I grab a bottle to go of the Steam Craft Lager that Brent left?  Thanks.

Ken, good to see you again!  Give Dirk a good scratch behind the ears for me.

Bear, that B&O picture is probably my favorite that you've posted.  That's cute.

Got both trains set up around the Christmas trees.  I have an On30 around the "fancy" tree that is all Bachmann holiday themed cars and a really neat looking 2-4-4-2 articulated.  Then, I have an older O27 Lionel around the family tree.  I realized this weekend, that the face of the smokebox is missing off the little Lionel engine.  Don't know what happened to it.  It might never have been there to be honest.  My brother found the set as someone was discarding it and grabbed it for me, knowing I like trains.  The tender was missing, but ebay fixed that.  Part of the side rods (eccentric crank?) were broken on one side, but they do not affect the operability of the engine.  It's fun to have, even if it doesn't get run often.  Now to see if I can find a donor for a new steam box face.

Cheers everyone!

Good morning Diners.  Tea and toast please, Chloe.

Good to hear from you, Ken.

Here is a driver's eye view train journey  north from Trondheim, Norway.  Over 5 hours, but (to me)  through magical, snowy scenery.

 Eveing Dinners!

Just let you know I am still above dirt. Letting the house go I am just to old to keep it up and house payment went up $200.00 from taxes because it is worth so much now, well in March it was?

Taking my daughters house which is $258.00 cheaper.

Since "something" seemed to go wacky with posting YouTube videos in the forum a few months back, something about the "not secure" in the site certification I wonder if David has tried to use the "embed" feature for posting videos rather than the non-functional method that used to work.

David, if you want to try this, from the YouTube video page use the "share" option below the image. When that menu opens choose the "embed" radio button.

 Share by Edmund, on Flickr

 Embed by Edmund, on Flickr

Another window will open and there is a "copy" check box there.

 Copy by Edmund, on Flickr

Simply click that, then return to the M-R forum reply window and click the usual "film" icon. There is a second tab in the "Insert Media" window that says embed.

Place your curser in the blank area and use Ctrl + V to paste the data from your clipboard that you copied from YouTube. Click OK and you're done.

Generally I tend not to click on links to the YouTube videos but if I see the video image displayed IN the forum reply I will click on that and let it play in the forum window.

Edit: Duplicate post. David already posted this video on page 2.

Here is a cab view of a Norwegian train operating in truly bad snow conditions. The video is quite long so I suggest that you skip through each segment. The fun stuff starts at about the 35 minute mark when the engineer is informed that the signals are not working. I would suggest skipping through most of the segments. Just take a look at the beginning of each one and you will find the really nasty weather:

Cheers!!

Apparently how they got the info was quite ingenious, however, they were morons in how they went to use it.

Speaking of Batman, Batgirl just called and is returning from overseas today instead of tomorrow. She is picking up my Daughter as she got let out of University 3 days early. Time to get the BAT-Girlfriends out of the house!Laugh

Here is a video for David, Batgirl is on the 1500hrs sailing.

Good morning, it is -5 and sunny.

Wife comes home tomorrow so I better run the vacuum and spruce up the joint. But first another cuppa.

Last week I got a call from the credit card company that my card had been compromised. I had made a hop over the border to purchase something at a multi-national chain. I was down and back in 20 minutes. The scumbags tried to rack up $30,000.00 in charges on my card, so the bank fraud squad asked me to come to the bank for a meeting twice in one day. At the second meeting, the RCMP fraud dept was also there and I spent a couple of hours working with them and they figured out the U.S. retailers' computers had been hacked. In the end, the FBI got'em. Today I got another call thanking me for all my help.

After yesterday's Ice-Capades I don't know if I will head out with the fleabags today or not. If I do I'll have my spikes on for sure.Laugh

Great photos everyone.

Not sure what to think about this one.Laugh Once upon a time.....

Good Morning,

A snowy, blustery day here so far. I have postponed a grocery run until tomorrow. It will be clear then but quite cold.

Enjoying the winter photos being posted. Mind you I don't have to look far for a winter scene.

My wife had a bad week so hope things improve. She really struggles with Christmas, it has become a time of loss remembered, not joy. No family support at all, what little we have.

On that cheery note, think I will have another coffee.

Good morning

Had a good time with my Daughters yesterday.  None of us had seen the fourth Jurassic Park, World Dominion, so we watched it after playing board games.  The Colossal Raptors never did much for me but always been a big fan of Ol' T-Rex.

They added Gigabotsaurus and Therizinosaurus, whom we called MittensLaugh  Those two scary monsters were fun to watch but in the end, T-Rex always wins the dinosaur fightPirate  Of course, none of the three sequels were as good as the original movie.

Seasons Greetings Ulrich and Petra.  Glad to hear you were able to find a new residence in a good area and wish you both the bestSmile

I presume that said person, Ed, would not approve of any old photos where railroaders were going about their business without the benefits (??) of modern safety measures/equipment, though to be fair those 1930 NYC stats make for a sobering read.

ASSUME makes an ASS out of U & ME!!!

I must admit I have strained relationship with Work Safe officials, I’ve banned two of the airport’s safety management systems consultants from my hanger.
A lot of the new breed are big on theory, have a detailed knowledge of the Rules, but have no grasp of what aircraft maintenance is actually about, what the responsibility of the certifying engineer is, and seem to think that a dayglo vest, and strategically placed “road cones” can mitigate a serious lack of training for the new ffolkes!!
Besides my attitude to safety is regarded as too flippant, though over the years I have found that ffolkes generally remember a serious topic if it can be delivered in a humorous manner, rather than droning on and on!

The Flying Beaver looks like a great place to have a coffee, Batman, though I must admit I don’t particularly like the look of the Turbine Otters, but then the P&W 1340 radials are getting rather long in the tooth now.

Thanks for updating us regarding Ulrich and his good lady, Dave.

More news from Ulrich.

He has found a very nice apartment in southern Germany. They are awaiting the landlord's signature on the lease as we speak, but if all goes well they should be able to move in by March.

The apartment is in a very nice older buiding which has been fully restored and brought up to modern standards. It is in a very nice neighbourhood which will be a huge improvement over where they have lived for years. I don't know if you recall, but they have suffered through a home invasion and being robbed at gunpoint in their current location in Hamburg.

FYI, he still follows the forums so if you want to address him directly just make a post.

I am glad that he and Petra's future is looking brighter.

Cheers!!

Good evening from the chilly West Coast.

It is my son's 24th Birthday today, so I drove into town and we went for breakfast at The Flying Beaver. It is a great restaurant at the seaplane base at Vancouver Airport which is on the Fraser River. Great food and constant take-offs and landings. I spent a lot of time there when I was working and it is still a favourite haunt.

Came home and went for a 10.08km scoot with my Bud, it was brutal. It was solid ice most of the way. It took 2 1/2 hours which is slow for me but I burned a 1000 calories which is way more than I normally would for 10km. I have several sets of spikes but did not take them with me (idiot)Laugh

When I worked at the airport I was the safety Attila the Hun. Working in and around aircraft especially if the engines were running I gave no quarter. If you were caught not setting your parking brake in whatever vehicle you were driving, the first offense was a three-day suspension, second, a two-week suspension and the third was dismissal. I saw a few know-it-alls lose a very-very good paying job just because they did not apply the parking brake in their vehicle. A long list of other moron moves saw others fired as well. A guy I knew at one of the airlines was killed because the truck driver did not chock his wheels. Not chocking your wheels also had you looking for a new job.

Wife is still awayCanucks are on tonight, the bar is stocked, I have a nice big rib-steak waiting for me and I have a 3000-calorie credit on the day so it is pig-out time.

Our icy 10km trek wore out the dog as well and he was passed out on my lap snoring like a banshee.

All the best to all.

Brent

I hope you didn't read my reply incorrectly.  What I found amusing was that someone would apply 2002 FRA procedures to a photo that was taken in 1936.

NOT AT ALL!!!  I am sure the photo was taken safely and not a problem.  Didn't mean any harm!!!  It just reminded me of the incident out at the museum.  I would assume the Train was under full brake (Likely Hand Brakes) if the prime mover was even up and running!  Thank God that safety has become The prime concern for all people working around trains and railroads.  A lot of us have read about the things that have happened back then.  Yes!  What was commonplace back when the photo was taken would have to be carefully staged today if allowed at all.  (You don't want to deal with the RR Police!!!) LOL

Sorry!

I hope you didn't read my reply incorrectly. I'm in no way belittling safety precautions. What I found amusing was that someone would apply 2002 FRA procedures to a photo that was taken in 1936.

Howdy!!!

gmpullman
Then he went on to expound on his knoweledge of "three-step" protection, etc.

I am certified as a Brakeman out at the musem (I usually work as a "trainman"/ Car Host) and I have asked for three step, I think, only 3 times in the 15 years I have been a crew member.  Only once when we were actually running passengers in some of our cabooses.

A lady with an infant baby was detraining at the North end to go to the other museum when she dropped a knitted booty that was on the baby.  She hopped off the caboose (not the safest thing to do) and was going to crawl between the cars to retrieve the booty.  I managed to get in front of her and said NO!  She got very angry and upset that I wouldn't let her crawl between the cars.  Once I got her setted down and told her I would retrieve it, I went to the radio and and said, "Ray Howard to engineer (sos & so), I need Three Step Protection."  He said , "You have three step", I thanked him and was about to retrieve the booty.  The conductor (who was a young kid), by that time had run down to where I was and he went between the cars and got the booty!  Wrong!!!  He did not have 3 step!  He was violating federal rules by going between the car without permission....

The lady was given the booty and went on her way.  Then the conductor again violated Federal rules and released 3-step.  Nope!!!  Only the person that askes for Three Step can release it.  I nicely reminded him of that!  He turned the brightest shade of Red!  The rules, it is said are written in peoples blood!  That is why you follow them to the letter.  I get really scared when I see vounteers (who are all trained and certified, BW) not abide exactly with the rules!!!

OK, sorry!  I'll shut up!
