Thank you.

Interesting they choose to use a war bonnet paint scheme and passenger cars instead of a more Florida RR scheme with reefer cars.

Here is another video by the same chap, Mike Armstrong, who filmed TF's freight train video. This time it shows the Florida Brightline passenger train in operation. The colours certainly are bright!:

Hi TF,

Thanks for the great video! I watched the whole thing. I have always been amazed by how long some of the real trains are.

Water Level Route

I had a horrible dream last night that woke me up about 2:30 am.  Didn't get much sleep after that.

At least it's hump day!

I had one of those toss and turn nights where all I got was Junk Sleep last night as well.  I hate when that happens Mike.

I'm thinking there'll be better sleep tonight cuz I'm really tired and there's only four and a half hours left of Hump DayYeah

Actually, Edison made experiments with mobile telegraphy many years before. His ideas were the beginnings of the ADT company. Edison also invented an electronic vote counter... little did he know Zip it!

So, I wonder how many kids these days can recognize the sound of a teletype machine? When was the last time you heard one working? They used to be all over on the railroads. I still have the teletype pages from the last trains recorded out of Cleveland Union Terminal on "Amtrak Day 1". At GE we had rooms with acoustic tile on the walls and cork floors to reduce the noise of the machines.

Regards, Ed

Hello, diners.  It's time for some after-dinner coffee.

TF, that's neat Endymion stuff!  That is one of the most fun events.  Our pastor was a member of the Krewe of Endymion, so it was always fun to watch.  Endymion came right by our school, so we had some good places to watch.

Lion, I used to give up something for Lent, but I haven't done that for several years.

Dave, that's a nice kitchen addition.  You'll wonder how you ever got along without it.

Florida railroads:  This garden railway is at the German area of Epcot at Disney World:

Hey, it is in Florida!  I flew in and flew out, so I didn't get to take any photos of Florida railroads.  This will have to do.

TF, thanks for the King Cake!  I'll bet your wife misses the fun.

Hi John

My Bad!  My response a day late and a dollar shortWhistling

You're so very welcome and Oh but she does!  Judy really misses Carnival time down there.  The last time we were both down there for fun was the Millennium 2000 and that one was Really a Hoot!

That's when we got the Endymion 2000 numbered print.  Uncle Butchie was lucky enough to get the Bacchus one that we wanted as well but being very popular, that one was sold out.  That was over twenty years ago and still hanging on the wall.  Where does the time go John?

We went down there some years after to help Judy's brother move to Wisconsin. We basically handled everything because he had a bad back injury and can't lift a thing.  Most all of her family moved after Katrina but a few of them still live down there.

We were long since overdue for a visit and we're planning on going before the corona hit and spoiled it.  Just waiting for the right time now and I have to agree with you that the food is spectacular down there.

I enjoyed looking at your pictures and I'll have to dig some out to post sometime.

The new pantry is finally installed. I was really happy that we had the same installer who did the kitchen in 2009. His work is amazing!

Here is the old broom closet come pantry. I didn't take a picture of the inside but it was ugly!

Old pantry removed:

Bulkhead, walls and floor repaired. Of course I forgot to protect the new floor so we (Dianne) had some cleaning to do. She was not impressed!:

New pantry. We couldn't match the colour to the other cabinets but it is close enough:

Now we have to fill it and clean the entire house. We put up dust barriers on the kitchen doorways but there is a thin coating of dust everywhere despite our efforts to control it.Grumpy Actually, we don't have to do the dusting. The maid service will be here on Friday to go over the whole house. We are going to pay them double the usual rate because every single place where dust could settle, it has!

Time to change the furnace filter.

Cheers!!

Dave

I always thought is was odd that my Mom wanted to observe Lent. She was Swedish and we were Lutheran at the time. She always asked what I, as a pre-teen, was giving up for Lent. She was glad I was giving up chewing gum. I don't think she ever caught on that I never chewed gum, any time of the year.

We have to write out our "Bona Opera" and give it to the Abbot prior to Lent. I guess it proves that we are thinking about Lent, and it prevents monks from biting off more than they can really do.

I wrote:

"I Could say that I would give up snacks, Yet I might fail in this."

The live of a monk is supposed to be a "Continous Lent" and so that does not really leave a lot to give up. But Lent is not about giving up, it is about moving forward in one's life of prayer.

Happy Lent...

This is a FAST day so the LION went out looking for some fast food. Dinner

Last night was Fat Tuesday.  The GF is still not quite presentable, so we were looking for some sort of Mardi Gras take-out.  The best we could come up with was ribs from a local BBQ place.

Good morning

LaughLaughThanks for breakfast LionDinner  Judy sometimes makes those except she takes a small glass and punches a hole in the center of the bread for the egg to sit inSmile

I stand corrected Bear.  I knew who they both were when chatting with them of course, but would confuse the two with both members having Cedar in their Forum names when I was off line.

They were both fine gentleman and interesting to talk to.  Rob (Cedarstrand) was having a tough haul with chemotherapy at that time.  There was a lot of support with prayers here.

Cedarwoodron lived out of state but grew up in the same neighborhood as I did and still had family here.  There is a Cedarwood Street in St Louis Park so I guess that makes sense.  He told me the Cedar Lake Bridge was rebuilt the 4th or 5th time over the tracks and was designed as a Railroad History site.

I went down there the very next day and spent the better part of the late morning reading all the history of the Great Northern Railway that used to occupy that area.

The photos posted on the wall looked like an afterthought but we're quite interesting.  I wondered if a resident of the area perhaps printed and posted them there.  Photo 1 shows the original Cedar Lake Bridge and photo 2 shows a tall bluff that is no longer there anymore.  I grew up about two miles from this area during the Burlington Northern merger and those old pictures sure looked completely different back then.  They were fascinating to look at.  I've been meaning to go back down there and see if they Incorporated those pictures into a more permanent fixture.

This is the U36B Seaboard Coast Line, Spirit of 76 diesel my Grandfather gave me for my 11th birthday.  I've managed to keep it all these years and sits on my fireplace mantel.

Mr.TF, there is a forum member who went by cedarwoodron, who last posted on the Forum, July 2020.
I think Charlie is referring to Cedarstrand, Rob, whose last post, incidentally here in the Diner, 24 December 2020.

What with the current news, it is all a little depressing, so something colourful and hopefully, cheering!!

I was wondering about Rob who lives on the farm in Georgia. Last time he was in the Diner he was having some health issues. I can't remember his last name but he was a wildlife artist at one time.

Late evening Charlie

Just finishing a late night movie and I got to hit the rack.

It's been cool up there eh?  We've had a streak of the lower 40s here for the last few days and it's been just beautiful.

I remember Rob.  And I remember he was having some medical issues also.  His signature was he always had the cowboy behind his name when he signed outCowboy

I don't ever recall seeing his last name.  It wasn't the last time I remember talking to him but we were talking about the history ledgers under the Cedar Lake Bridge over the railroad tracks.

Now I have been known to get things confused at times so I could be wrong but I think his forum name here was Cedarwoodron, .....I think?

Ed, have you spoken to Ken lately? Seems like the old guard is fading away.

Can't tear myself away from the news these days. Very distressing.

About the only Florida train I know is the DisneyWorld monorail.  I've got some pictures of that, but I don't think that counts.

As I recall back in the 60s and 70s, there was a sizeable Mardi Gras rugby tournament in NO.

John,

To tell the truth, I don't remember the Mardi Gras rugby tournament.  I was probably thinking (or not thinking) of other things back then.

I know that Tulane University has a men's rugby team and a women's team, and there is a Rugby organization in New Orleans with at least several teams that play.

Jim

"Someone suggested Florida for March.  That sounds fine.  Don't know much about railroading in Florida.  But, I'm also open to just about anyplace.  If we do Florida, does that open the diner to Disney vacation pics?"

I'm with you.  About the only Florida train I know is the DisneyWorld monorail.  I've got some pictures of that, but I don't think that counts.  This should be a good month to learn something about other trains there.
