Scale Trains 4 axle announcement
Posted by mbinsewi on Saturday, January 29, 2022 10:08 AM

Just watched the preview of the new loco from Scale Trains, It's a GP30, the first ones out of the box were Rio Grande and CSX, and the C&NW.

That might just induce me to make my first purchase of ST's offerings. While I have a half-dozen of the very capable Proto 2000 models it might be nice to see what improvements the ScaleTrains model may have to offer.

Thanks for that heads-up —

Still waiting for them to come out with something usable (older) for me.  The GP30 is a move in the right direction.  Still too new for my era though. Sigh

I don't see anything to suit me in the first run. I'd be looking for a pair of as-delivered B&O Sunburst, with the cast nose herald.

After that probably a few in Nickel Plate and New York Central.  I might even be inclined toward some Chinese Red Burlington units:

I'm pretty sure these ran into Ohio on some PRR run-through freights and possibly on the NYC, too.

As Tom says, a step in the right direction. I talked to Shane at a train show not long after Scale Trains was formed and mentioned if they would consider  older models but he hinted that probably wouldn't be the direction they would take.

The Brunswick Green on the Pennsy unit looks pretty good. Maybe a tad light as many manufacturers seem to follow but on our lowered lighting levels on the layout it will probably be fine.

Glad to see D&RGW offered but perhaps an error, they showed it as being built in 1996?  The model is listed as late 80's thru late 90's which is a real head scratcher.  I "think" that if I remove the rerailer and maybe swap out the plow, that will back date the model to the 1970's.  Still, I'm very perplexed at why they are offering the D&RGW for late 80's thru late 90's except maybe they are catering to the more 'MODERN" folks.

My guess is that date is a typo.  I am not sure why you are perplexed at the time era of the models.  Remember the Scale Trains guys all came from Athearn, and I am sure they know what era models sold better than others.  I can't fault them for that.

edit. I guess I was wrong

From another site.

There are actually 60s and 70s versions. The smaller lettering is supposed to represent that timeframe. There's a typo on our website and we're aware of it.

The PRR units look nice, a very long list of details. It lists detailed all around, top and bottom and all. They should look and sound nice going down the rails, even with out a crew.

Now where did I put that disposable incomeUmbrella?

Yes, that was ScaleTrains (perhaps Shane) making a correction at a topic on AtlasRescueForum.  If I understand correctly, the Large Herald D&RGW GP30 is supposed to be late 80's thu late 90's, but the artwork shows the older style plow (which may be correct at that late time from too) and the late style rerailers.  And the coupler cut levers is late reportedly too.  So maybe just changing out the rerailer to the earlier "butterfly" style might get the large herald GP30s looking good prety close for the late 70's.

The small herald D&RGW GP30's per ScaleTrains update you quoted should be for 60's and 70's, but the artwork and pre-production photo shows the later plow and late style rerailer which contradicts the ScaleTrains comment.  Hopefully ST will udpate the artwork and details to correctly represent the models.

I wish these manufacturers could get their gears to mesh on this stuff.

I feel the same Ed, but, given all the things that I have seen in this foirum about BLM, I'll take my chances with SC, as I already have a couple of theirs, and 0 BLM's.

The price for BLI models seems to up quite a lot. Is their MSRP always much higher than retail price, or it is because this one has more details?

I have an ST Rivet Counter SD45 in Santa Fe livery, runs flawlessy & sounds great, also have two ST BNSF ES44's arriving in March, highly recommned Scale Trains for quality & customer service.  Bayway Terminal NJ

Several factors, of course. General inflation and higher costs for labor and supply costs. The Paragon 4 decoder has the "Go-Pack" stay alive built in now. Buyers are expecting road-specific details which adds to research, production and inventory costs.

I generally don't have to be an early-adopter when new models are released. So MSRP may be somewhat high, with a little patience you can find the engines at a discounted price or even BLI's own refurb site for roughly 40% off MSRP.

The mose recent GG1, as I recall, was listed at $420. I found one at Factory Direct Hobby for just under $200. TrainWorld is yet another site where you can find deep discounts if you're not too choosy.

Good Luck, Ed
