Happy Thanksgiving to all.
As planned, we went to my great niece's new house for Thanksgiving. This was also a combination house-warming party, and her 30th birthday.
I cannot believe she is 30. I still remember the day she was born. I will always remember her as this beautiful six-year-old little girl.
She really has a great family.
I have a very cute story about how they met. I don't remember if I shared it in here before, but if I have not, it is worth it.
We tried to get a family picture in the sunset. I tried to tell everyone that taking a picture with the sun behind us was a bad idea, but they would have none of that.
This is the picture we got:
It makes me kind of sad that none of our daughters were there for Thanksgiving. However, having a big loving family still makes for a great get-together.
We had a lot of good food and a great time.

The World Is A Beautiful Place.
Happy (belated) Thanksgiving to all my friends south of the border!! Now all you have to do is lose all that extra weight that you just put on ("burp") before Christmas gets here. Then you will be able to do it all over again!
We are celebrating my family's Christmas on Saturday. Dianne and I spent most of the day getting everything ready. We try to do as much in advance as possible so that we can relax when our guests are here. That also makes it much easier on our backs!
The turkey turned out beautifully. We tried a new recipe. Instead of filling the bird with dressing, we stuffed it with quartered apples, onions and oranges (credit to Chef Jean-Pierre on YouTube). I also spread copious quantities of herbed butter under and over the skin. The skin turned a beautiful rich brown and the turkey is very flavourful. We will reheat the turkey in broth on Saturday.
One thing we did that made cooking the turkey a lot easier was to invest in a meat thermometer that constantly monitors the internal temperature of the bird. We set it to 165 defrees F and it beeped when the bird got there. No guessing, no dry turkey. They are available with both corded probes and remote probes. Next time I will only go to 160 degrees. There will still be a bit of pink meat next to the backbone but the turkey be more moist.
I hope I haven't put you to sleep after all that great food you have just had!
Cheers!!
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Hey everyone, Busy November weekends here for me.First weekend: Train show in Monroeville PA (Greenberg train show), I was involved with the T-Trak (N scale modules) group. I can explain T-Trak for anyone interested.
The Following weekend(My birthday weekend): Operated prototypically on the Legendary Huntingdon Northern, a layout owned by Bob Prehoda. There is a video of the layout on youtube.Last weekend: I had my first ever open house for my personal layout. It was open due to the NMRA division 2 Mid Central reigon having a division meeting in my town. I ended up getting 16 visitors in one day- more than I was expecting. It was also a lot of positive feedback on said layout. This weekend: My club will start the annual open house season. I cannot wait

Good morning, diners.
Just a quick drop-in, more driving today. It's cold, but we're heading south!
It's nice because the car radio today will be playing Christmas carols. I never get tired of it.
Hope everyone has a great Friday!

Morning guys. Had a large post typed out and my home network crapped out so when I hit submit it was all lost. Abreviated version-had a good day yesterday. Hope everyone else did too. Indoor Xmas decorating today. I'll check in later if I remember.
See you guys.
Mike
Good morning all.
I survived the feast, and I feel great this morning.
All materials are on hand... time to get started on a big project.
This is frustrating.
Walthers has the promo code "DC12OFF" for 12% off today.
I tried entering the code several times, and I keep receiving the message it is an invalid code.
Any ideas?
Good evening Diners. It is snowing. Horrible wet stuff that soaks your clothes. Staying indoors. Going to run some trains.

Is the promo code DC120FF or could it be DC12OFF, a numeral zero or the letter O?
The first holiday pop format took my favorite radio station before Thanksgiving. I'm perfectly fine with Silent Night or Oh Come All Ye Faithful, but a month of Santa and Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman gets old very fast.

Hi David,
We've only had sleet in Berwick, but a cold wind which by 16:00 (it is now 19:30) has increased to Gale-force. I am worried it will blow tiles off the roof. I have not known winds so strong. There are bits flying around outside, hitting the windows.
On the East Coast Mainline, which runs right past my backyard, all trains from/to Edinburgh - are off, from 16:30 on.
Thanks for the drink Kevin, but on Fridays & Saturdays I always have a bottle of 'Pilsner Urquell' - a Czech lager I first tasted in Prague, many years ago.

Good afternoon from the sunny West Coast.
Spent the day outside cleaning up around the joint, wife brought all her pots in or where they go for the winter. I now have a lemon tree in my office with lots of lemons on it. Lemons need Gin, I'll have to buy some of Ryan Reynolds Aviation Gin then the kid can tell him his Dad bought some.
Using the letter "O" where a number should be used causes so many mistakes. When we were preparing the flight manifest and other really important documents that involved weight and balance for the aircraft, if anyone heard someone use the letter "O" instead of saying zero, they were in big trouble. When people give me a phone number and say "O" instead of zero I always ask why they have a letter in their phone #.
Jimmy, so happy to hear your open house was a success. Did you take any video?
I think I have been roped into helping or more likely running a couple of big hockey tournaments in the new year. I thought I had seen the end of showing up at the rink once the kid packed it in. I am kind of looking forward to it, lots of work but we have such an amazing facility with full medical. Drs. and Physiotherapist right on site in the sports medicine clinic. We have multiple sheets of ice and a dozen really nice change rooms. We are always awash in money as we get so much corporate sponsorship, we never spend it all, we put on really good tournaments with huge spreads of food to keep the kids (and parents) motoring all weekend.
End of the month is sneaking up on us so I will make some suggestions for December. One is Christmas trains as in Prototype, city/park/zoo trains that get dressed up for Christmas, and of course those we have in our homes. Another idea is trackside structures that are not stations. I am easy whatever or wherever we land.
David, I watched a TV show on that Polar Line that was really interesting. But my favourite thing out of Norway is Sissel.

If Walthers advertizes 12%OFF and the code is DC12OFF, is the seriously any doubt?

None at all. It is an "O" and not a zero.

I like either one.
I will move the Diner unless someone else wishes to do it.
I made salted caramel sauce for the Christmas pudding today. I had to do it twice. I burned the first batch. What a horrible taste! The second batch came out okay. I added a touch of brandy.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks,
All I have done in the past is copy and paste the opening paragraphs and photos from the previous month's Diner and then edit the wording as appropriate. You have already updated the RIP track to include Garry so I should be good to go. If I have trouble, I'll let you know.
What a day!
I thought I would get to "play" with my new Ryobi Concrete Mixer today... nope.
I have all the materials on hand, and I am ready to go... it is backyard paver patio time. All I need to do is remove a 36" by 36" concrete stoop. I fired up the Makita SDS Plus hammer, and went to work.
IT TOOK FOUR HOURS to chip away the old stoop. I figured 30 minutes tops. It was way more work than I expected.
Here it is about 75% of the way done.
I did start surveying the lines for the new landscape wall, but nothing got built, and no concrete was mixed.
POST HOG!
I just tried Walthers for the fourth time today, and the Promo code DC12OFF finally worked!
My order is in.
Good morning Diners. A bowl of porridge please, Zoe. Add some extra Scotch in it.
The storm that has hit the U.K. is finally subsiding (here at least). I hope Lazers is okay. Apparently he has had worse weather than us.
Brent. What a beautiful song by Sissel. I had never heard it before. Thanks for posting.
Another Railway line in Norway. The Flam Railway. The final construction by the Germans in WW2. I have travelled on the line twice. Once in Summertime, the other Wintertime. Magical both journies.

Hi David, we're ok thanks, but most of the fence panels and posts are not. Wheelie-bins and contents on display. House windows blathered by dirty water. Even the Washing-line came down. There is stuff littered around the garden and yard. Went to Tesco's this a.m. Trees down along the roadside and no newspapers! Still no trains on the ECML. 13:30 UK time.
Our roof survived, but my neighbour has a couple of Roofers working on his right now.
None of this may seem excessive in the States, but in England - it is a all major disaster.
I hope that you and your family and all forum members are ok.

Good Morning All,
30F this morning with a few scattered light flurries last night to boot. Youngest son is on his way back to Long Beach this morning - it was good to see him. Middle son is in Savannah for a week so we have Emmet the dog while he's gone. Daughter is back working and the granddaughter is off oxygen entirely and has her first set of premie clothes. Now we wait for her release from NICU. Oldest son is just hanging out at home though he was in the shop yesterday following up on some loose ends for the winter rehab of the Pescarolo that ran at Daytona. Still it was good to see everyone over the holiday even if it wasn't in person with my daughter.
Still no progress in the basement as I'm doing the last of what I can manage before the real winter shows up. Hope you are all doing well. Ciao, J.R.
Good morning everyone. I don't need to get ready for work for another three hours, so I am going to go make an attempt to get something going on the backyard project.
News flash. It's warmer in the south than in the north. I fought the grand children for the last pieces of bacon. I'll check in tomorrow. I don't like typing on this little phone. Hope David and Lazers have survived the storms. Later.
Good morning all,
That looks like a project, Kevin. I have the same Makita drill as you, and I also have a much bigger Bosch demolition drill.
Sometimes, if the slab isn't attached to other concrete, lifting it up with a bar, and swinging a mall works just as quick.
I've always wanted one of those little mixers that you bought. .
Anyway, starting to get easier getting around on the new hip. The doc encourages me to add my full weight as much as possible, so I have been using a cane. I still have the walker as a back up, for the not-so-easy days, and middle of the night trips to the can.
We had a nice quiet Thanksgiving. Our son and daughter went to their spouse's homes, one in Ohio and the other in Indiana, for Thanksgiving, so the wife and I had a nice dinner for 2. She found a small turkey breast which suites us just fine.
Earlier in the week, our daughter and one of her running friends, participated in an Iron Man race in Tempte, AZ. Daughter says thats the last Iron Man for her. Race results weren't as good as our daughter had anticipated, but they had a great time, and seen a lot of country, as they drove from Kenosha, WI.
Getting back to model railroading can't come soon enough. I can handle the basement steps, OK, just want to be able to get around a little better, once I get back to it. I have lots of cleaning up and moving around to do.
We're going back up to our north woods hide a way on Tues. Spend a couple of weeks, and then close the place down for the rest of the winter. We usually open it up in early March.
Now that building material prices have settled down, next construction season's projects include the painting and installing siding on a shed I built, and getting the ground work done for a 10' addition to the cabin, that will happen in a couple of years. That addition will make the little place ready for year around living, which just might happen in the not too distant future. I have a younger brother, and his wife, that is currently building a home up there, 2 miles from us.
Thats about it for now guys, time to do my hip exercises. Have a great weekend!
Mike.

About ten minutes into the demolition I seriously considered renting a bigger tool.
