Brent ..... Thanks for your comments. I am questioning spending too much time on the computer if it results in my allowing myself to get upset.

Also Brent, thanks for your pictures on Banff and Lake Louise stations. I recall a family trip in the late 1950's when we rode on Canadian Pacific. We stopped in Lake Louise where we stayed a few days.

More recently in 2002, my wife and I rode on the Rocky Mountaineer. We were seated in the front row of a full dome car which was the first of a few of that type of car. We could see over the roof tops of single level coaches.

Here is the view of Banff from the full dome car.

A few years later, we rode Amtrak's California Zephyr in Colorado. Here is a photo looking out the rear door window of the train. You can see a standby locomotive. The platform is part of Denver Union Station. It has a beautiful building, but I did not get pictures of it. You can find plenty of pictures of it on the internet. In recnet years, it has been upgraded to be a transit center.

Good morning from the no clouds in the sky West Coast.

I got up this morning and dug out all my Gortex rain gear as it was pouring out. I have just finished my second cup and noticed there is now not a cloud in the sky.Thumbs Up Works for me.Laugh

When I worked for the Feds we got issued all our weather gear from stores in Ottawa. It was absolutely the best clothing out there. Jackets, pants, gators, boots, parkas, you name it. I use to wear it hiking into the backcountry and the RV was full of the stuff for camping. I still have a ton of it, most still brand new. I have been giving it to family and friends that are the outdoor types.

I must admit the Feds looked after us as far as what we needed equipment-wise. We were allowed to choose our own type and brand of vehicle(s) for the job we were doing. It always included the premium sound system and fully adjustable seats. In the 1980s someone discovered that giving employees the best seats meant fewer bad back problems and comp claims plummeted.

Garry, I am sorry you are feeling frustrated with the forum the last few days, this too shall pass, at least it always does for me. I often will step away for a while when I feel I cannot bite my tongue any longer. I enjoy your steady participation and contributions immensely. In the fifteen years, I have been here, diner/forum participation has been up and down. I recently posted a couple of videos of my layout here that got three views each according to Youtube analytics. Not that I care, but it shows the interest generated here. I posted the same videos on FB and they got over a hundred views along with a bunch of good conversation to boot. I still enjoy this joint but I feel it is a former shadow of what it once was. It is like they built a new highway and the diner now sits on an empty road. We have had some really interesting characters over the years in here, I'll say that.Laugh

Field Trip: Banff and Lake Louise - Toronto Railway Historical Association

Banff, I love the river rock chimney on this station. If I ever build my own house it is having river rock for the chimney and fireplace.

One more cup of Tims and I will get off my butt.

All the best to all.

Banff.

I think it will be a long time before I start another thread in the forum especially WPF and Show Me. ..

Garry, I pass by the Diner on my daily walk, but I rarely stop in. I did stop in today, and I was surprised to read your comment about future posting.

Personally, I would miss your posts and your photos. I am aware of your recent frustration over the deletion of a thread, but is there more than that causing you to decide not to post?

Howdy ....

David .... Thinking of you, and praying you are getting well.

What's TF up to? I have not seen him here lately. Also, Terry in northern Wisconsin. Ken is still absent. There are others.

Thanks everybody for all the photos of stations you posted. I can think of many nice stations not yet posted this month.

I think it will be a long time before I start another thread in the forum especially WPF and Show Me.

...

I recieved the items I need for my next passenger car project. I like making prototypically correct Burlington Passenger cars, adn this will be another one.

Good morning, everyone.  Bacon, eggs, and black coffee, please.

I just finished my two mile walk -- the first in a week.  I am finally feeling well enough again to walk.  I'm not sure what I caught, but it seems to be going away.

I've got some more work outside scheduled for today.  We're supposed to be having several days of rain coming, so I will get as much done as possible before it starts.  Some parts of a brick walkway need some leveling, and I think I will try to get to that first.

I have never been to this station, but I found the photo online and it looked like a neat place.  It's now part of the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum.  It had its last train in 1971.  It's in Springfield, Illinois:

Hope everyone has a good day.

Good morning diners.

David - Speedy recovery.

JaBear - Glad you didn't have any issues from it. In Pennsylvania we actually have had a couple of minor earthquakes, the last one in my area was several years back, and while we could not feel it, we could hear it.

It sounded like the roar of a very loud (and very hot) gas powered furnace. It lasted less than 30 seconds, and we had zero idea what had occurred. I went out to check on the next door neighbor, as he was out in the driveway working on his truck.

He said the only thing he noticed, was his tool box lid and the man door on the shed both slammed shut suddenly, with zero apperant reason.

That is when I noticed that the animals were all freaked out, and figured out what had happened.

We both found cracks in drywall at joints and window corners. That night, the news reported a minor earthquake had occurred, and that minimal damage had been reported from it, but that it was possible to both feel and hear it in our area.

Kevin - Glad the new j*b is going well.

Lion - Was it you that influenced the Walthers social media tip of using kitty litter as ballast? Whistling

Everyone not mentioned - Hope you are all well.

Remodel update - The expected shop-vac bags finally arrived... So off to finish clean up and give a good scrub down.

Next month - Bridges sounds good to me. Yes

Everyone enjoy the day!

In the past year, one thing I noticed is I have had to cut back on what I can do and how long I can do it for. I know it is age catching up to me and it is to be expected, however, I don't have to like it.Laugh I can still do circles around everyone I know.

Mr. B....  You know one thing I haven't done at this summer is get on the bike!  More fun if I have someone to bike with, I guess.  I guess we all keep going as long as we can and doing that keeps us going longer, I sure.

I only got 1.6 miles of running in today.  Should have finished up a 5k, but several other things got in the way.  Tomorrow may have some drizzle at times but I still should be able to get out.

I am hoping to get back to some model railroading this coming winter.  I have one more certificate to earn for MMR in the NMRA.  Several people have been bugging me to get it done and if I don't do it this winter, it will probably not get done!  Will be going to the NER Convention in a couple weeks.  Maybe that will get me jump started?

Ray, and others, I am now 74.  I thought I was doing well at 70, still biking and still skiing downhill (black diamonds) and still playing serious ice hockey every week.

I don't know if it was the stress of the divorce, but I ended up having a stent put in and spending hospital time.  I live in Delaware now so skiing is not convenient, and I'm done with hockey.

I got down from 235 to about 210 before I had any trouble.  Or, maybe slimming down and spending gym time turned  me into a senior stud muffin and helped precipitate the divorce.  I'm about 200 now, and feel good, but these heart meds seem to limit my recovery.  Too many hot days here make biking difficult, along with bad drivers on narrow roads.

Aw, face it.  I've gotten lazy.

I have been trying to find some photos I know I have hidden somewhere in my puter of the NYC station in Canandaigua.  Mr Vanderbilt even had a penthouse (top floor actually) in the Canandaigua Hotel next door (there was a roofed walkway between the two building way back when and the RR side entrance was into the Basement floor which was at the level of the RR tracks.....  Will have to spend some more time searching.  Should be able to find in my collection the Erie Station that is still in use by the Rochester and Genessee Valley RR Museum in Rush, NY as well.

Five years ago I weighed in at 285lbs. and couldn't have walked a 5k...  At one point when I was teaching I tipped the scale at 325lbs.  I now weigh in at 197 on average. Should have started getting back in shape 25 years ago.

20 years ago my 5' 6'' Brother-in-law at age 55 rolled his bathroom scale past the 300lb limit where it shows 0 again. People would not believe him when he told them he only weighed 6lbs.Laugh Long story short he got in shape and started traveling the world running all the big marathons and now at 75 rides one of his two very expensive road bikes 200 miles a week. Runs a cycling group for past fatties that has about fifty members. It is quite the story for him and was and still is featured a lot on TV and in newspapers/magazines..... All the men in his family didn't make it past 70 but he is now ripping it at 75.

I am 170lbs right now and pretty lean at 5'11". I can hit 180lbs pretty quick if I increase what little weight training I do, which isn't much.Laugh If I don't work at it what muscle I gain disappears pretty quick. Today on the bike I wanted to see how high I could get my heart rate up and topped out at 126, which is way under what the max for my age can be. I am really happy about that.

The best part is Meryl likes the barely visible but there, six-pack that her old geezer husband has. She says it better never turn into a 24 or I am cut off.WhistlingLaugh

Bridges for next month is fine with me, maybe it will bring TF out of hiding.

In 1959 we moved from Winnipeg to Vancouver and my Mom, sister and Grandparents took the Canadian in April. We also had my sisters budgie bird in our roomette on the train. Dad had already gone out ahead of us when his transfer had gone through.

This is where we arrived.

Waterfront station (Vancouver) - Wikipedia

Canadian Pacific had a decent size station before this one, but it did not last long as it was too small and inefficient. It was gone in 15 years.

Vancouver Icons: Waterfront Station

The new one was built in 1914 and is still in use today as a major transit hub. Bus, rapid transit(skytrain) Seabus, commuter rail, helicopter (helijet), and floatplane service are all here.

The old station just before it was demolished stands on the far side.

Good morning, everyone.  It's cool outside right now, but another day in the 90s is predicted.  It's actually going to cool off later this week.

When I was a boy, my grandfather who lived in Tacoma, Washington, was sick and in the hospital.  My mother and I traveled on the City of Portland to Tacoma.

After a day and two nights, we got to the Tacoma Union Station.  Unfortunately, I don't remember the station at all.  I think I was so busy meeting family that I don't remember the station at all.  I think this trip was one reason for my lifelong love of trains.

Tacoma's Union Station:

Have a good day, everyone.

Hi Folks,

The end of the month is fast approaching! Any suggestions about what theme to use in the Diner next month? I know we have had lots of pictures of bridges posted in the Diner, but how about making bridges the focus for October. It might be interesting to learn the history behind some of the massive structures, and of course there are always the disaster stories to add some flavour to the month.

If anyone has other suggestions please speak up. I would be willing to open the October Diner, but again, if someone else wants to give it a go, please say so!

Cheers!!

At one time Cincinnati Union Station was the crown jewel of modern railroad transportation:

Then there was Amtrak!

Today Amtrak has brought trains back to a vestigial station at the original C.U.T. location. Just ain't the same, though Tongue Tied

Covid has been around long enough that there are some really good studies out on how fit people are being affected by covid. Some really good reading and reading the articles make it even easier to get on the bike.

Eeeyep!  If I was to catch the crap, I would likely have a much better chance of not getting horribly sick.  That said, I still don't want to catch it!!!

I have had my doctor's eyes get very wide when he found out my average resting heart rate now is 54 beats per minute.....  I can remember a few years back when just ambling a couple times around the track at the college (indoor) had me wanting to get back to my seat.....  Today, I actually feel the best when I am out running.  Fitbit says my Cardio Fitness (scale of 0 to 50) is between 44 and 48.  Doc cut my diabettes meds in half a couple years ago, and my BP at the Doctor's office is actually in the normal range.  When I take here at home it is sometimes as low as 103/63.  Usually a bit higher but still in the "I hope I'm not going to keel over with a heart attack anytime soon range....  LOL

A few weeks ago I was finishing up a 5k over in the park near my house and a young guy walking a very fierce looking (but sweet) Bulldog stopped and let the dog come over and sniff my hand.  Then the dog gave it big lick!  I scratched the puppies head and became instant friends.  The guy said, "I don't mean to be rude but.....  How old are you?"  When I told him I am pushing 75 the look he gave me was priceless.  Eyes got wide and his jaw dropped.  I took that as a compliment! LOL

Five years ago I weighed in at 285lbs. and couldn't have walked a 5k...  At one point when I was teaching I tipped the scale at 325lbs.  I now weigh in at 197 on average. Should have started getting back in shape 25 years ago.  I went completely to pot after my wife died and didn't care whether I lived or not.  I feel a whole lot better about life and myself now.  Oh well.......

Hope everyone out there stays healthy and has a great evening (night, day) Where ever you are!

That's really good Ray, I remember where you started from and you should really be proud of where you have ended up.Thumbs Up

I should really track my walking as sometimes we will head out and decide how far we are going to go by going right or left every time we come to a fork in the trail. Sometimes we log a lot of miles.

Being in shape lets me eat as much as I want, weight gain is not an issue. I go back for seconds and thirds. The best part is how I feel, I never ever nap and I don't get tired. At 64 my BP this morning was 101/62HR41. One thing I discovered a while back was, no matter how hard I pushed myself, how fast or long, my heart rate would never get close to the maximum rate for my age.

I have my recumbent bike set to the maximum tension, people will get on it and can barely turn the pedals, yet I can go flat out for an hour no problem, though I have had to cut back as the old joints are telling me to.Laugh

I always think of 2816s side rods in this video when I am on the bike and keep going faster and faster. I then have to make myself slow down because unlike 2816, my parts will likely start to fly off.Laugh

Good morning from the wet coast.

Had a great dinner out last night. We ordered this giant seafood appetizer platter and then I had the seafood sampler for the main course. Being on the ocean it was incredibly fresh, obviously right off the boat.

SeeYou190
York1 I'll post this picture of the Chicago & North Western station from the small town of Plainview, Pierce County, Nebraska. Wow, John... that is a neat looking structure. You're right. It really is different than other stations and depots.

That is a cool building. Trackside structures are always a favourite of mine. Maybe for next month or some other month down the line, we can have a Trackside structures (other than stations) theme. I love getting ideas for the layout from this kind of photo. We can also go back to choosing a destination as we have in the past, I am happy with whatever is decided upon.

MisterBeasley
We have a friend here who was admitted to the hospital with Covid.  He was there several days, and he claims they literally did not treat him at all.

If he/she is obese or has another chronic condition, that will get you a stay in hospital for covid. Obese people can have very abrupt deterioration in their condition and they need to be monitored closely. We have many friends on the front lines in health care and hear their stories when we get together. Obesity is the contributing factor for many other chronic problems that contribute to the decline.

It is exhibition time for the NHL, and I am looking forward to game #1 tonight. Hopefully, this season will follow a normal course and unfold as it should. I still feel like I should be at the rink all day Saturday and a couple of evenings a week. Oh well, I had a good go at it and the other Dads deserve the same great memories. I really miss the excitement and passion for hockey the kids exude. I have had many great messages through FB from so many of these kids that are now adults telling me what great times we had. The fact they even bothered to search me out makes the memories even better.

I am being a deadbeat today so far. Time to get on the bike. I burn 1000 calories and can do it as fast or slow as I choose. It usually takes 32 minutes while listening to the classic rock station and having my 4-4-0 ply the layout. In all the times I have had a train running while on the bike, I have never had to stop because of a derailment or other issue. When I was younger I would do an hour, but old age has made me cut down to half an hour. Watch, today will be the first derailment while on the bike ever.Laugh

I can't believe how many RR-related pics my truck is in. It is quite unintentional but here is another one.

Hope you are feeling better soon David, I'm thinking of you.

All the best to all.

Kevin ..... Thanks for posting in both threads. .... It was very discourteous to simply delete the thread with no explanation. Steve O has a list of rules for the forum, and there is no rule against have two Weekend Photo Fun threads at the same time. I'm upset about this.

David,  You and yours are in my thoughts and prayers for a quick and complete recovery.  Nasty stuff that COVID!!!

My son and my Granddaughter are currently in quarantine again.  They are both fully vacinated and had the virus already...  That said they both had some symptoms of the disease and the county has put them in quarantine until the tests come back negative.  They should know tomorrow I guess.  Personally I await the third jab.......

We have a friend here who was admitted to the hospital with Covid.  He was there several days, and he claims they literally did not treat him at all.

Good Morning,

David, hope you have a speedy recovery!

We are having summer like weather here with temps in the 70's all week. Lots of migrant birds visiting the yard. They come for the water in the pond and the food. Some are repeat customers as they know where to look for the food. We moved the spot but many are going at first to the place where it used to be. They are mostly white throated sparrows but a few Juncos are coming too.

No train news. I have to go to the LHS to pick up a display case I ordered a year ago for my brass Hudson.

Time to check the feeders again.

Thinking of you David.  Stay strong.

Garry, that McCook station looks like a converted factory.

Oh well... it will be paradise soon.

We're just about to the start of paradise here too.  Highs in the upper 60's, lows in the low 50's.  And it only gets better from there as the year goes on!  Your thoughts may differ though. Laugh

Cheers guys!
