Foamy Water: Waterfalls or Whitecapped Waves
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 7, 2001 9:35 AM
What is the best way to make foamy water, such as waterfalls, whitecapped waves or boats' prop washes? I am interested in making a waterfall on my fixed layout and a rapidly flowing stream on a module. A harbor scene might be a future consideration, with boats cruising around.

David -- You could try using clear Silicon caulking, then drybrushing the tops of the waves with white paint. I did a little diorama using this technique and it works great, especially since the Silicon is clear and shiny.

Also, check the all-time index on this website (I believe there's a link on the main page) for "waterfalls." There were a few articles in MR in the past several years that had some wonderful techniques -- I believe one was only several months ago.

Check out Geoff Nott's aticle, December 2000, edition of Model Railroader. This article will answer all of your questions. 100% Clear Silicon Seal,is best. Any work with it, needs to be done in a ventilated area. Practice with it first, to get the desired texture. Tree Roots, can be made with it too! And, it will accept Testors "Flat" Model Paint.

You might try using Acrylic Gloss Medium. Dave Fray tell how to use this method in his book "BUILDING REALISTIC MODEL RAILROAD SCENERY". Also, theres a lot of exxellent articles in Model Railroader.
