Well, I made a large corned beef and onion pie yesterday. That did not last long. It should have lasted two days, but oh no.
I shall make some Apple Turnovers today.

Alvie, while they are both small pickles gerkins don't taste at all like French cornichon. We buy Maille brand that are from France. Most grocery stores here stock them or you would likely find them at a specialty store. They are definitely not sweet.

My state looks a little out of place with all the gray states around it.
With the headquarters of UP in Omaha, and the world's largest railroad classification yard in North Platte, we've got to find a way to get the state into the gray zone.
Back in August or September, I posted that about a dozen houses in my neighborhood went up for sale at almost the exact same time.
All those houses were sold within a few days, mostly to flippers doing rehabs on the properties for profit.
Three of them are complete already, sold again, and are occupied by the new homeowners.
This house, on the next street over is actually them same as my house, but it is mirror-reversed. The front yard was so overgrown I never noticed it was the same model.
It is in mid-flip, and this was a serious eyesore for years. I am glad it is getting fixed up finally.
The paint on it was just completed.
This house has barely started construction, and it is already sold for over $300,000.00!
The market is shooting up again.

The pickles are Gherkins which are similar though, not exactly the same as Cornichons. It all turned out tasty though.

Alvie, Haven't had a Croque Madame or Monsieur for a long time. Reminds me of our trips to France. Hope those pickles are cornichon. My eife is mad for them so we always have them on hand.
Had the CP Hudson out for a run. It sure struggles with 22" radius but nice to see it in motion. I did some research and found out my model was the last import by Van Hobbies. It dates from 2002. They also imported a few Bullet Nose Bettys. No wonder it was so expensive.

Hoping everyone is doing well this weekend and that the snow storm rolling in soon won't be to awful. I moved my truck and my mom's crossover in case my city has a snow emergency declared. Hoping not, but playing it safe.
I'll take a Croque Madame, with a mimosa to drink please.
For those unfamiliar, a Croque Madame is a French ham and Gruyere cheese sandwich with Bechamel or a milk sauce on top, and some Dijon mustard as well. It is then broiled in an oven, and when done, a fried egg is put on top. I used Brioche bread to make mine, as well as added some bacon to Americanize it a bit and because it just did not have enough cholesterol as is ha ha.
I have today and tomorrow off from work so for today, I went for a short hike around the local park with a friend which I enjoyed and glad to see him as I hadn't much at all since before the pandemic began.

Cold air coming down the vent put out yhe fireplace pilot last night. Glad I was able to re-light it.
Started reading book I got for Xmas. It is about Miss Supertest, a hydroplane boat powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin engine.
I have to go out today to pick up some veg from our green grocer. Good thing the block heater is plugged in.
I will be lucky to get the jab by the end of March as there has been delivery problems here. Supposed to be sorted out by the end of the month. The positivity rate is now 3.5% and only 40 new cases for a city of 750,000. Besides who wants to leave the house in this ewather.
Think I'll pull out one of those Branchline sleeper kits now that I'm in a kit building mood.

Here is a photo of the traffic on the way to the Golden Spike celebration. It was a very long two-lane road from the interchange at the Interstate Highway to Promontory Point. Bumper to bumper. 5 to 10 mph.
One more photo. .... Kevin says "The world is a beautiful place". .... One the days of our trip was sightseeing in Idaho.
We saw Shoshone Falls. It is called "the Niagra Falls of the West", and it is huge. The Snake River has been carving rocks here for many centuries. Vertical distance actually is significantly greater than Niagra Falls.

A regular to go please Flo. Douglas, the New Haven when it was still running it's branch to Pittsfield Mass had an Armstrong turntable by the then unused roundhouse. They used it to turn both the FL-9s (for obvious reasons since you can't see diddly reversing, and the RS-3s because it was slow speed going and coming and the engineers preferred to run short hood forward to better see obstacles (like cars stuck on the tracks, the occasional cow and often grass overgrowning the tracks so they could get a run on it). Nicely balanced and maintained the engineer and brakeman or conductor could turn the engine so long as it was centered on the bridge.
Got the broken trailer emptied and the lift gate back in place by putting a pan under the leaking ram for the hydraulic lift gate (two - one each side) and putting the leaked fluid back in the sump. At the end the gate wouldn't go back over center so we used the tried and true forklift with a pallet on it to assist the gate and got if all closed back up and off to the repair shop in time (they closed at 11:00 today).

Good morning, Diners! I assume by now we are near Reno somewhere. The desert is a beautiful place.
It's snowing again. We've had about six inches and it's supposed to continue through to tomorrow morning. I have one gallon of gas left for the snowblower, so it looks like that will be used tomorrow.
I working with the Arduino code on making some flashing lights for a crossing. The next step is to actually build the crossing signals. I've seen some great looking ones on Mel's site and some others, but I'm not sure I'm up to building these in N Scale. Of course, that's part of the fun of this hobby -- the challenges of working on something that might be difficult. At least that's what I keep telling myself.
In this morning's paper, I read an obituary of someone living here in my small town whom I didn't know. What's more, the obit said that he was a model railroader. It really made me wish I had gotten to know him, and it makes me wonder how many other nuts like me there are living here.

Bear, Charlie, and others, interesting conversations about the bombers. In Arizona, at the Confederate Air Force display, I got to climb into a B-17 on the runway. In movies, they always looked big, but in real life they were pretty tight inside. To get into the seats, you had to be pretty agile. There was no walking around in the plane.
Douglas, Have you had your car for years, or was it something you had bought for a hobby?
Dave and others, I hope your health improves and you get some relief. As has been mentioned, sometimes the medicine is worst than the illness. I'm thinking of you, and I hope you let us know how things are going.
Time to go out and start clearing. It's still coming down hard, but it helps to do it in smaller doses than to wait until it's over. If you don't hear from me for a while, have someone go out and check the snowbanks.

Well.... Deep subject. I got a call yesterday from Rochester Regional Health. At 2:20pm today I shall be sitting properly sociallty distanced to get my first jab of the vaccine! YES!!! There are two pop up clinics happeneing today in little Geneva, NY one is at a church in the lower income part of the city and the other is at The Hospital. I tried to get signed up for the one at the church as the Pastor of the church is a friend of mine (president of the MLK committee - I am the treasurer), I talked to him and he sent my info to the person in charge of sign ups for that one. May not be related but I got a call yesterday from the Medical group and was told to have my butt over to the hospital today! The pop up clinics are run by the same group, I know. I'll take what I can get!
I already have the appt. for the second dose a month from now. I am feeling well at the moment and just drove over to where it will be held to make sure I saw some sign of activity and there is a sign out by trhe drive that we are to use!

BigDaddyDidn't know you could buy Deere Direct. When I was looking for riding lawn mowers in Sept there were none to be had new, except for the low end Home Depot stuff, because of the virus.
Exactly what I ran into. One dealer's lot was bone-dry, another one was simply closed and no one answered phones or emails.
My intent was to go to the Deere website and try to find someone to contact at least to get my name on a waiting list or something.
Finally went HERE,added all the accessories I wanted and clicked "Buy It Now".
About an hour later got a call from a dealer a few towns over and they said they'll let me know when it has arrived and I can pick it up. They said "usually within ten-fourteen days"
We shall see. I put the order in on a Friday afternoon and, so far, I haven't seen the pending charge come up on my CC.
It's been years since I've owned a John Deere. Fingers crossed

Back in the late '90s my nephew was "tricking-out" an S-10 pickup with hydraulics and a super-duper audio system.
He ran #8 wire to a set of amplifiers he had in the bed. Paid $5/foot for this stuff! (Monster Cable)
Every once in a while I'd look at what he was up to and I saw that wire running through the sheet metal and tied to a set of batteries and NO FUSE!
I told him it was a disaster waiting to happen! Sure enough, he was doing that jumping-jack hop that those hydraulic car "enthusiasts" like to do and one of the batteries tipped and shorted everything out. Lots of sparks, sheet metal welded to other metal parts and lots of toasted wire. The battery blew its top off before a fire started.
That $30 fuse block was looking like a pretty good investment right about now!

I finally got my John Deere ordered direct from the factory No estimate of when it will be delivered but I'll either be plowing snow or cutting grass with a green machine. Turns out by ordering direct I saved $500 for buying "off season".

I have got a liking to baking. Therefore a busy day baking pies etc. They will be on the table later.
Heartland Division CB&QInside the mueseum, they had a very nice model railroad layout, and they had various railroad artifacts.
The museum in Utah is one of the best railroad museums I have visited.
This is one of the scenes on the model railroad in the museum.
The model railroad displays are shown of shadow-box style through the walls. It is a great experience.

On the following day, we followed the special train from Ogden, UT to Evanston, WY. Many other vehicles had people doing the same thing, and it was challenging to keep up with the train while stopping for photos.
The train arrived in Evanston, WY well ahead of us, but we went there for more photos.
There was a small railroad museum in the old UP shop buildings. We had a free ride on the turntable going 360 degrees.
The mainline had been closed for freight trains while the special train was enroute. We some trains waiting in Evanston to go westward.
The special train stayed in Evanston overnight, and departed eastward the next day.

Bear, I'll have to pick up a copy of that book. I had his book about the Avro Arrow that is an amazing but sad story. A movie was made about the Arrow that starred Dan Ackroyd. Murray Peden is from Winnipeg and a well known lawyer here.
Ed, I've been to Hay River twice. Not a great time of year to go there but do get some Arctic Char if we go. It is a fresh water salmon and really fine eating. The more direct way to get there would be north from Montana to Edmonton. If I had thought about it we could have gone to Churchill from Winnipeg. Via runs trains there in summer and fall to see the polar bears.
