Mine has got to be the EMD FP45[8D]. Nothing beats it's looks and power. Second would be the EMD F40C. Long live EMD Cowls!!!!!!![:D][:D][:p]

Personally I'm fond of those lovely EMD F's--F3's, F7's and the ilk. Classic Art Deco streamlining that still looks modern sixty years later!

Has to be the E-units. Favourite of those would have to be the E-5, stainless steel, fluted sides, the long, sloping nose that was changed from the E-7 onwards - beautiful locos. Pity there's only one survivor (9001A at the IRM) but that's far better than no survivors at all!

I like the FP7 - only a basic F, lengthened by 4 feet so it could carry extra boiler water. Any of the F's or E's were great looking, and the paint schemes applied to them were outstanding. I have a P2K Rock Island E8 - Now that is how God and EMD meant for a passenger engine to look like.

As much as I loved seeing any cowl bodied locomotive, my al time favourite is one I've never seen in person.

The Alco PA.

Seeing one in pictures in front of a passenger train or in the D&H's case, a freight, just an amazing sight.
The long boxy nose, A1A trucks all make up a regal looking locomotive.
I just hope Doyle gets one running soon.

But of course, you know I'm going to pick those Santa Fe FP45s! That body style and history, to me, makes them special. One of the situations that I really apprecite is that Santa Fe saved several of them and donated them to museums.

One cowl you didn't mention that's also special. The Chicago Metra F40C. Interesting story recently. Though officially retired, 2 or 3 of them were "Reactivated" recently due to some of the "Brand New" MP36 locomotives (they look more like RVs!) breaking down with electronic glitches! Ironic that the locomotives they were replacing had to replace them temporarily! Now that's poetic justice! I do hope that 1 or 2 of those F40Cs are saved from the scrap torch.

Guys,

Forgot to mention.

Though they have streamlined carbodies, TECHNICALLY, the EMD E and F units as well as the Alco PAs were not classified as "Cowls".

I may be mistaken so correct me if I'm wrong.

The E and F units relied on their streamlined carbodies as part of the structural integrity.

The post 1968 streamlined locomotives like the FP45 and F40 were simply hood units that had a streamlined carbody slapped onto the chassis. So with modifications the F45 was really an SD45, the FP45 was an SDP45, Amtrak's SDP40fs were SD40-2s, and the F40 is a GP40-2 with an extended frame.

The E and F units as well as the streamliners from Alco (PA and DL109) had chassis's that were unique only to their line.

Just a thought!

Antonio, you are right. I just tend to generalize anything that has a carbody/cowl as a cowl or covered wagon.

Try to get a hold of Kaslo shops in BC they make kits in HO and N scale for SD40f's as well as the SD50and60F's as well as a few other oddities, their kits are resin but the detail rivals the best plastic and brass. Rob

TrolleyBoy,

I sure do like those Canadian "Draper Tapers" that you're referring to. Neat looking locomotives! They're also known as "Canadian Taper Cabs".

A crazy Idea I've had for a while is to take a spare FP45 shell that I have and attempt a "Taper Cab" modification. Once I get my layout up and running and DCC established I'm going to attempt it.

Cheers!

Antonio make sure you post the pics when you get it done should be a winner. You might be able to use some of Kaslo's parts to speed you on your way. I f you live anywhere near a CN line the Tapers have been released to system wide service now so they pop up in trains all over the place. Had two SD50F's leading the morning laser train through town today(CN stack train) Enjoy TB

You missed the SD40-2F! It's soo great, looks soo much better than F40s, SD50Fs, and such.

Thank you, TrolleyBoy!

I live in Florida so I'm a long way off, but on the plus side there are MANY photos of the Taper Cabs. Some really nice ones on www.railpictures.net so I would have some nice reference material.

Appreciate the enouragement! Cheers!
