Removing Decals

I recently purchased a used brass steam loco that runs beautifully and is well painted (to my taste), but has poorly applied and incorrect decals. Has anybody tried the advertised decal removing solution from Joes' Model Trains? Or are there other suggestions? Everything I've tried in the past has ruined the finish as well as removing the decal.
