1850s-1860s resources available in N scale??

I've seached the web with no success. Looking for N scale locos and rolling stock, kits or RTRs for a Civil War layout. I can't find anything!!

Depending on how exacting you want to be, I might suggest the following.

1. Bachmann makes a 4-4-0 that seems to me to be just what you need. They also have passenger cars and a few freight cars suited to run with this loco. Try their website at: http://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/index.html

2. Atlas recently released a 2-6-0 Mogul. While I believe this loco actually dates to about 1880, moguls were produced in the 1860's. I think it's something you could use. Check it out at:

N scale has a hard enough time getting N scale steam and equipment for the 1950s. For the 1850s, there's basically nothing out there. Bachmann makes two 4-4-0s and Roundhouse (now Athearn) makes a 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 that can be backdated. That's it for engines (and the Roundhouse engines are light years ahead of Bachmann's offerings). In terms of freight cars, you've got Bachmann's flat, gondola, vertical tank, bobber caboose, baggage and coach. Roundhouse makes a 36' box, reefer, flat and four 50' passenger cars, but the're hard to find right now. Stay away from the Roundhouse 32' "Overton" cars, since only ONE was ever built, for the Sierra RR in 1902.

I'd strongly suggest switching to HO scale if you want to do a CW-based layout. HO scale 4-4-0s can negociate a 15" radius curve with a train of shorty cars, and you'll have a much better chance of finding freight and passenger cars. And it's easier to find 15mm ACW wargaming figures than it is trying to find 10mm ACW figs!

The Atlas Mogul is a good one for an 19th century layout. Athearn is re-releasing the MDC 36' rolling stock, and ModelPower is coming out soon with a new 4-4-0 and 2-6-0. However, as noted, there's very little prototypically accurate rolling stock out there. The upside is, most of the rolling stock of that era was very simple, so it probably wouldn't be that tough to scratchbuild.
