ATLANTIC CENTRAL I have never owned smart phone, at least not for my own use...... Actually, in the technical sense, I own three of the darn things, that other family members use........ I have a flip phone, if fact just got a new flip phone a few months ago when the eight year old one quit working. About five years ago I decided I needed to be more "pluged in" for work, so I skipped right over the smart phone and got a Samsung Tablet. I can't type on a cell phone, no way, I need bigger........ I can't read what on those tiny screens either........ And I would still rather be on my desktop than on the tablet....... Sheldon

I'm with you on the smart phones. I had one for less than a year and in that time I downloaded one ap. It was a Scrabble game that I played while I was on an airplane. The reason I got it was I had a dog tracking service that required a mobile device. I have a pair of beagles who are escape artists and when they get out, they will go for miles. It proved less than effective because there are so many dead zones around where I live and if the dogs were in one, I couldn't find them. I replaced it with a Garmin device that communicates directly with the dog collars and tells me instantly where the dogs are. It's been a life saver for the dogs. As for the smart phone, it conked out in less than a year, typical for Samsung products I have bought. I replaced it with a flip phone and haven't missed it. I don't need to carry a computer in my pocket and if I want to take pictures, I'll use my camera.

I pay for two of them, and I never touch either one!
maxmanWe now have a full page about smart phones, record collections, TV shows, and other non-related stuff.
Not quite a full page. I snuck in a thankful post to the folks at Kalmbach Media for keeping the presses rolling and getting the May copy of Model Railroader out on time. That was great work, and very appreciated.
I think we are all settled into our hermit life, so there are less effects right now.
How are you doing? Is everything OK?
Back on topic... it looks like the windows and sliding glass door for the house will be delayed because of the virus. Remodel work is not considered essential.
What happens if these companies go out of business? I have written checks for $4,000.00 in deposits.

Living the dream.
I thought this thread was supposed to be about how the virus was affecting our lives. We now have a full page about smart phones, record collections, TV shows, and other non-related stuff. I enjoyed reading the virus related things. I don't enjoy reading all the other junk.
Why don't you take it over to the Diner thread where it belongs so that I can ignore it?
Thanks
York1As far as computing, I never did like looking at pictures or reading things on the small smartphone screen. My computer has a nice big screen. My wife lives on her smartphone. If there's anything really important going on, she tells me. In fact, she tells me even if it's not important.
It sounds like we are living parallel lives in this respect.

I absolutely agree. And websites have a "mobile" version which is severely limited, compared to the 'real' site. I only surf the web on smartphone if I am in a waiting room, airport or absolutely need to know something right now, like which aisle in Home Depot has what I want.

I, too, got rid of my smartphone the week I retired.
My daughters think I'm nuts, but I can honestly say I have not missed it for single minute. When I drive or shop or walk or do anything else, I am free.

New England realism, mine showed up yesterday
My May copy of Model Railroader showed up today!
That is one less thing the virus is doing to my life! Thank you to the staff at Kalmbach Media for getting this done for us.
SeeYou190 Fotunately there was a very young lady in the office at the time named Chelsea that took the time to teach me to use the smart phone, and she never let on to anyone else what an idiot I was. Then, I helped her get a promotion & transfer to Charlotte that she wanted.

I hear you on that one. That's how I felt when my daughters we're trying to pound things into my head..... an idiot, I still am one too. I don't know the other 80% of what it does. It would take my daughters sometimes five times to show me something
That was nice of you to help Chelsea out. What comes around goes around is my motto too

Track fiddler I had my daughters come over and help me......" No you do this Dad "......" No it's like this silly ".
I got my smart phone right after my tyoungest moved out.
I as well needed a smartphone for work. At first I was like an ancient dinosaur in the modern world with the thing. I had my daughters come over and help me......" No you do this Dad "......" No it's like this silly ".
Finally I got the hang of the thing after a while, I probably know about 20% of what it does now.
I don't have a computer anymore. The third one I seriously threw out the window. I got sick of mutiple problems, viruses, bringing it in for a factory restore and then buying a new one eventually anyway.
I finally learned to do everything I used to do on my computer on my smartphone. If my phone goes wanky or catches a virus. I just shut it off, my service provider reboots the system connection automatically in minutes. I turn it back on and it's like new again. I can stream it to anything else I need to do. The main thing is no more problems, I'm sticking with this thing.
You guys may have seen the second Oddball in the diner last night. Rio did the original one here. I don't know if that's called a direct link but I just learned how to do that last night
rrebellIt is strange how tecno some of us are and others don't even have a smart phone.
I jumped off of the technology train at the iPod station.
My entire life I wanted my own radio station that played the music I want to hear. The iPod made that possible, and I have what I always wanted.
All other technology seems unnecessary to me, and I am very happy.
I carried a smart phone for years because my job required it. Since the smart phone meant work, lack of freedom, and no time for myself, I never liked it.
I have not had one in weeks, and I am happier without it.
It is strange how tecno some of us are and others don't even have a smart phone. Me, I fall right in the middle. I am not a first adapter but rather join when they get things worked out. Train wise this means DCC. First units that were really user freindly came out 10 years ago or so (by user freindly I mean most anybody can get basic use out of it without learning much). Now train wise on my layout, I installed a few mor switches and tested more track. Thought I had a spot that needed rework but I had just enough room to make it work. Have gotten pretty good at soldering track, want to get very good before I have to tackle other electronics like decoders. Bought a bunch from some guy on ebay along with a case of speakers for like $50 and included a few shay sound decoders and a few nw2 along with a bunch of others.
Thanks for the reply Mike. A smartphone is what I have for a computer, streaming is one of the things I'm familiar with, I'll check it out
Sirius is a subscription thing, but, they are offering free streaming until May 15. Follow this link to check it out.
Also, many vehicles have Sirius installed, and I think that is also open now until May 15. So if you have a vehicle with it in, and have not subscribed, try it out. I'm not.
I think you can also stream from a cell phone, not sure about that, as I don't have a "smart" phone.
Mike.
My You Tube
Good morning Mike
I clicked on your link and checked it out. Can I register on that and listen to it for free just like Pandora or Spotify? May sound like a stupid question but I'm kind of a dinosaur when it comes to new websites
This is the Outlaw Country I listen to.

Don't forget Alison Krauss, Lucinda Williams, Iris Dement and Gillian Welch. It looks like what we used to call Outlaw Country has been renamed Americana - at least on Apple and Amazon's streaming music services. "...and the deaf can take both of my ears if they don't mind the size"

I have the right to remain silent. By posting here I have given up that right and accept that anything I say can and will be used as evidence to critique me.
mbinsewi ATLANTIC CENTRAL He is without question, one of the great American poets of our time. I have to agree with that. According to Sirius XM Outlaw Country, John is in stable, but serious condition with the virus. Ray Benson, with Asleep at the Wheel, also has been diagnosed with the virus. Willy's Road House is another good XM station. Mike.

Because I don't listen to the radio, I had not heard that. That is sad to hear, hope he gets well.

Yes, John Prine is getting old, and has had some health issues.
I bought my first John Prine album in the early 70's.......

ATLANTIC CENTRALJohn Prine
"New Train" is one of my favorite songs, and not just because it has the word "train" in the title.
I saw John Prine in concert earlier this year in Tampa, he is VERY old. It reminded me of how badly off Frank Sinatra was when I finally had the chance to see him live.
This is a fan-made video, so some of the images are a little weird.
SeeYou190 mbinsewi When I do turn on the satellite radio, it can either be country, as in old time, or outlaw, OR classical. I'm totally worn out on the 70's and 80's classic rock. No more. There is an Outlaw Country radio station out of Dallas called "The Range" that I can listen to streaming on the computer. I love it. I am also completely tired of 70s-80s Pop/Rock music. -Kevin

I'm more of a 50's, 60's, 70's rock guy. By the 80's I was mostly into country except for a few specific artists.
Also very much a John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker, Waylon, Willy and Hank Jr kind of guy.
The Beatles, the Beach Boys (seen them three times in concert), Billy Joel, the Eagles, and then there are the girls....
Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter.....
Just to mention a few, 2400 33LP's and CD's is a lot of music........
In another life (with another wife), I saw a ton of concerts. The ex worked as a security guard at two of the downtown Baltimore concert venues......you do the math.....

rrebellMy problem used to be my super hearing when I was younger. I heard noise I was told I could not hear and in every form of music I could hear the distortion in it, records tapes, didn't matere the quality. You know those sound makers that drives away bugs or mice, even in my 40's I couldn't accually hear them but I fell them, they drove me nuts,
I'm really getting off the subject here, but when we put in a new playground, our school had bad issues with teens hanging out there at night using drugs.
We checked into a sound machine called "The Mosquito". It emits sounds which only people younger than 20-years-old can hear, and it's very irritating to them.
We decided not to put it on our playground, but the video of it is pretty neat.
ATLANTIC CENTRALI have never even seen an episode of "The Young and the Restless".......
I started watching The Young And The Restless 40 years ago, maybe longer.
The lady who babysitted us one year over the Summer watched it every day. It became my Summertime thing for the rest of school.
I watched the first 1/2 hour almost every lunch hour at work. All the guys got into it with me. It was always a laugh when we would hire a new guy. He would be in the break room, and Y&R would come on. He would wait for someone to change the channel. but no one would. This was usually followed by a "You've got to be kidding me" moment. A bunch of muscular alph-male men's-men gathered around watching a soap every day? Yup!
In three months, he would be sucked in.
I make no appologies, I am deeply involved in the happenings in Genoa City.
York1My wife and I are TV-aholics.
I watch very few television shows. The Young And The Restless, Survivor, and Big Brother are my only addictions.
Movies on the other hand... I watch at least one movie a day, and there are some movies I have seen dozens of times.
ATLANTIC CENTRALI also don't want to hear music played out of lousy speakers, boom boxes, smart phones, etc.
I hate smart phone speakers, and even worse, small amplified blue-tooth speakers. My loudspeakers in my house are large, and can move a volume of air. Small speakers give me a headache fast.
ATLANTIC CENTRAL York1 I'm the opposite. My wife and I are TV-aholics. I think it started when I started a job after college in a strange city and knew no one. The TV became my friend in my small apartment. No matter what I was doing, the TV on made the apartment seem full. Nothing has changed. When I wake up, the TV goes on. It stays on until I go to bed. It doesn't matter much what's on, it's just the company I keep. I know that some think this is idiocy. I don't really listen to music, so TV programs are basically my friends. Right now, I'm watching James Bond riding the train in "From Russia With Love". Great movie! John, I understand, my wife has become that way as a result of Rhematoid Arthritis. I watch TV with her some, but really I can only stand so much. I really dislike the themes of most of the shows. Unlike many people, I like the quiet. I don't generally play the radio in the car, I don't turn a TV on unless I am going to actually watch and listen, I have a hard time listening to others talk with that kind of noise in the background. I love music, BUT, even with that, I don't like it playing constantly while I am trying to do other things, or have a conversation. I also don't want to hear music played out of crappy speakers, boom boxes, smart phones, etc. It gives me a headache fast. Designing and building HiFi speakers is one of my other hobbies. I want music to sound good and be played at a proper listening volume, like a live preformance. So, I can go in the HiFi room (sun room) and put on a record (yes a record, I have about 1700 of them) and simply sit, listen and enjoy. My new layout room, the 1500 sq ft basement of our new to us house, will also be a listening room with full access to the 1700 albums and about 700 music CD's. Sheldon

John, my wife is the same way, if not a TV, it's a radio. She can also go to sleep, with either or, on. I'm the opposite.
When I do turn on the satellite radio, it can either be country, as in old time, or outlaw, OR classical. I'm totally worn out on the 70's and 80's classic rock. No more.
My TV of choice is anything documentary, so it's a lot of PBS, I haven't watched the History or Discovery channels lately, so I maybe out of touch.
I like dark and quiet when it's bed time. That's why I love our spot in the woods in northern WI.
There are a couple of neighbors around us, as old, or older, and they have lights on all, watching TV. I see them wander out about 11am, or later.
Not knocking their life style, just not for me. After all my years in construction, I'm wide awake about 4:30 am, although I don't actually get out of bed until 5:30.
